- With the recent Assassin's Creed Shadows promotional material Ubisoft released, there's been a wave of controversy spreading like wildfire.
So today, let's take a look at what we've been presented with, and answer the question that's been burning in everyone's minds: " Is Ubisoft faking Japanese history for money?"

They say the Yasuke stuff is historically accurate on their multilingual website, but they block Japanese from viewing this website.
But on their Japanese local site, they acknowledge it's fiction/fantasy.
It's almost as if they are trying to misinform the non-Japanese about something they would have limited information on, while knowing the Japanese would see through and call out their misinformation immediately.
And there are people out there who go out of their way to defend Ubisoft while doing no research of their own.

This is much like Lockley's book most of this fiction is based on, the english version is full of opinion and completely made up stories, while the Japanese version specifically states much of it based on speculation.

If Ubisoft is not engaging in some sort of agenda that serves as history revisionism, there would be no need to constantly insist that Yasuke is actually a "real" samurai in Japanese history. Why? Because just like they say on their Japanese site, "it's fictional". So why does Yasuke *_have to_* be a real samurai in history for them? Because they want to revise Japanese history. Plain and simple.

The number one thing that pisses me off with any idiot talking about history, especially in this Yasuke debacle, is that for some reason "highly unlikely but not impossible" somehow translates to "extremely likely and or common." the existence of a few women who took up the blade does not equate to an entire society of women warriors.
That's the normal impression the average Japanese gamer would have if they saw this game.
A Japanese man who first visited America and within 15 months became a hero respected by Americans during the Civil War.
He spoke fluent English and became a legendary soldier with a thorough understanding of American culture.
This is about as messed up as it gets.
If it were fiction, it would be a stupid game and laughable, but when you say "true to history," it's a culture war.
There are even some idiots who claim Lockley's historical novels as sources and claim that black samurai were real.

Lockley's fictional novel attracted many people to look up Yasuke on Wikipedia.
Many people assume the legend of Yasuke to be historical fact without seeing that the source of the Wikipedia page is Lockley's book.
Movies and games are made based on Wikipedia and Lockley's novel, reinforcing Yasuke's historical fact overseas.
Of course, it's all fiction.
Lies are transformed into truth by layering plausible fictions.
This is how history is revised.
Japanese people have been living abroad until the ACS information is released.
I was not interested in it because I thought they were enjoying the creation overseas.
I had no idea that there were more idiots than Japanese who thought the legendary samurai Yasuke was a historical fact.

Japanese historians know more than anyone else. And no I do not count armchair historians. The Idea that a non-Japanese have studied Japanese history more than the average Japanese isn't out of question.
The most realistic reception to Yasuke would be the one going on right now with Japanese fans and fans of any sort of historical accuracy reacting to the nonsense of Yasuke as a Samurai. Look at the backlash online. That would've been the backlash in 1500 Japan to a six foot black guy walking around town in armor bearing the crest of Oda. It's a literal "elephant in the room" metaphor made real, there would be thousands of references to the giant black samurai in Oda's court protecting him. But no, there are virtually zero references to Yasuke, and none of them state he was a samurai. Most of Yasuke's story is based on the fiction written by Lockley.
Even the claim he was given a stipend and land is dubious, you cannot find original text be it Jesuit or Japanese, there are places that say this and they provide sources, but if you actually read the sources you won't find any reference and at best a footnote, which again is the elephant in the room, how could there not be a hundred references over the course of a year about a giant black guy whether he a Bushi or Samurai...

Wikipedia was correct before but the staff in Ubisoft changed this to make their game closer to historic accuracy.
And someone else changed it back.
They kept going back and forth until Wikipedia locked the page claiming that experts suggested that Yasuke was a full-fledged samurai. Most websites in the west talking about yasuke was already changed as well.
The truth is a lot of entertainment is trying to push minorities into having more relevance in history just to make us feel more important, and anyone who challenges them about it is called a racist and homophobe just to shield themselves from the criticism.
And it's not the first time the West has tried to revise history through entertainment. They changed the races of Cleopatra, Achilles, Anne Boleyn, Isaac Newton and other important figures in an attempt to erase white or light skinned people from any accomplishment in history for the next generation.
Western companies and activists are trying to change Japanese culture to suit themselves and say they speak for the entire Western world and most of us here are against it. We would like Japan to stay the way it is, but we fear sooner or later it's going to end up with the same problems like we have.
And what is a retainer? They are usually samurai.
@@Crazycorn2 It just means someone who is in service to a family. Could be a samurai, could be ashigaru(Men-at-Arms or peasant levies), could be a servant. Just like a man-at-arms could be a knight, that was not always the case and they could be hired arms or part of a noble's personal army. It's a term that includes many groups. It's like associating mercenary with highly skilled soldiers, when merceries can be anything from former elite force, regular infantrymen, militia or even former bandits. highly skilled isn't a term usually associated for the last three.

"a military retainer of a Japanese daimyo practicing the code of conduct of Bushido"
The evidence points to him being a samurai and I haven't seen any historian state otherwise. He was also given a stipend which further solidifys the idea of him being a samurai.
It's just wishful thinking from a particular "group of individuals" that are trying to convince others that he wasn't.
The problem now is that the cat is out of the bag and you are getting people to research the subject and conclude that he was actually a Samurai and do the opposite of what you are trying to do. I didn't care or know much about Yasuke before this drama started but now, thanks to the disinformation campaign by people like you I know for sure that he was a Samurai.

As for the controversy over Yasuke's surname, my personal opinion is that since Yasuke worked for Oda, it is highly likely that the values surrounding Yasuke and his surname were basically those of a samurai.

従って、庶民の価値観や常識で苗字を解釈するよりも、武士の価値観で苗字を解釈する方がずっと良いのではないでしょうか。
ちなみに、織田信長は相撲が好きで、自分が主催した大会で優勝した人に名字を与えたという記録があります。
他にも、報奨に関する記録はたくさんあります。
弥助が姓を得たのであれば、必ず記録に残っているはずなので、武士に必要な姓を持つことはできなかったという説を推すしかなのが現状かとおもいます。
此処から先は弥助ではなく、信長に関する記録を追うしかないのではないかと思います。
私は弥助は武士ではなかったと思っています。

Watched a special on a visit to a Ninjitsu dojo and Shinobi did carry a smaller then average Wakizashi on their back under a sort of camo cape made of reeds so they could keep it out of mud and water when walking in marshes lol. So obviously that translates to what was in the trailer.
There were people who carried swords on their backs. It was just that you could not draw the sword while carrying it on your back.
This theory has remained basic to this day.
Recently, I saw a video of a person trying to draw a sword from his back. However, after all, it was also a process of pulling down the scabbard in a circular motion and then pulling out the sword.

I don't care if the other characters are 100% different from the historical facts.
For example, Nobunaga could be a woman, a lesbian, and the reincarnation of a demon king.
Yasuke, the descendant of a great African warrior, was kidnapped by the Templars and raised as an assassin. As he grew up, he handled requests for assassinations around the world on orders from the Knights. Later, the Knights get information from a missionary that a demon king was born in Japan. Then the Knights send Yasuke to Japan to confirm the truth. Isn't it interesting that Yasuke who came to spy on Nobunaga through a missionary decided to assassinate him?
From announced Yasuke is main character, eastern gamers imagine nice story of black assassin in sengoku era.
But published trailer video were disappointed us.
After he appeared and until we know trailer has no good contents and UBI's stupid scheme, we expected.

There is zero period evidence for Yasuke at all. Try to find pictures of letters or accounts discussing him that can be verified from the period. The claims about Portuguese missionaries all come from the book African Samurai, by Thomas Lockley and Geoffrey Girard. I suspect they got the claims from a myth by actual Japanese people but with no actual source for the myth, that's where it ends. You cannot find actual period evidence because it doesn't exist.

- On the Japanese side: Yasuke was mentioned in the "Shinchō Kōki" written by Ōta Gyūichi, which is a chronicle about Oda Nobunaga. It is preserved, translated and was published in 2011. The Japanese wikipedia acknowledges him, which is also worth mentioning. Since the majority of Japanese were illiterate back then, it's more difficult to obtain written evidence that lasts to this day.
- On the Western side: In 1581, there's a letter from Luís Fróis to Lourenço Mexia that retells the actually meeting, saying that Nobunaga forced Yasuke to strip and scrub the black from his body because he thought it was soot. In 1582, Luís Fróis wrote a report that documented the entire meeting.
Most of the information on Yasuke in this video comes from "Shinchō Kōki".

@@The_JamesV That's what they say, but nobody actually seems to have pictures of the actual documentation, let alone has actually verified it. That Luis Frois "evidence" specifically seemed to come from the book African Samurai that I mentioned in my original post. AFAIK there is no actual letter, just someone claiming that there was a letter. It's much like the American army smallpox blanket situation where an activist author decided to embellish a story to sell a book and it worked. It's not based on reality or truth. It's made up.
The thing with Assassin's Creed is that its meant to be a sort of alternate history. The "flawed" history is best explained in the first game in a conversation between Vidic and Desmond, Desmond tells Vidic that the history seemed off, flawed somehow, Vidic retaliates with "doesn't match up with what you read on an online encyclopedia, what your high school history teacher taught you? Let me ask you something, do these supposed experts have access to secret knowledge kept hidden from the rest of us?", "But there are books, letters, documents, all kinds of source material from back then, some of it seems to contradict what the animus is showing me." "Anyone can write a book, and they can put whatever they want on its pages...". The whole point of Assassin's Creed was to show "the real" history (of teh fictional universe AC takes place in), have Ubisoft gone to far with some of the changes *cough cough* Odyessey *cough cough* but that has been the whole MO of the Assassin's Creed universe since its conception.

That may work somewhat for justifying the game, but then why is the actual real life Wikipedia page now being edited and locked to state definitively that Yasuke was the great and noble first black Samurai of Japan (as if there were also many after him.) This depiction of Yasuke as a fully trained, practicing, experienced Samurai taking part in duels and battles is not historically supported. The videogame is being used as a springboard to rewrite history to trick people into thinking that it is historical fact.

Yasuke was in Japan for 3yrs, not 15 months. Thats how long he worked for Nobunaga. And I'm seeing a lot of VERY reputable sources saying that he was most likely a samurai, given the positions, titles, weaponry, and stipends he was afforded.
