I am 64 years young. I am a CFI, I have the A&P IA. I have been in the certified world all these years. Lately I have been watching EAC, Mike Patey, the flying cowboys. I am beginning to think that the experimental class is the way to go. Light airplane, big engine and do what you want to with it. Teaching the younger generation is a must, in all trades. Thanks, love the videos.

Don't know whether it might assuage or exacerbate Christy's concerns, but I bought and BUILT my own RV12 (RV8 was wanted, but it's too expensive for my budget) --- by - my - self. Bought the kit in 2017, took until mid 2019 to get it put together and registered, got the airworthiness in late 2019 (got both an LSA-IA certificate out of Denton, and then a Repairman out of the FSDO in late 2019, and have also been awarded certification by the EAA as a Technical Advisor) and have put nearly 100 flight hours on it since. BTW --- I am 72 and female, so a young male whippersnapper should NOT have any problem doing what I did. (Oh wait, then there is my brother-in-law.....).
OK, so I had a couple of guys help me ATTACH the wings and the tailcone, but otherwise, I did it myself. No part of the aircraft is/was quickbuild
    Does any of that help?

RV12 is a great kit but I’ll disagree; it is a kit that is fairly a quick builder. Good show on coming to completion! Many start but few finish.

I love Bryan’s channel. Found my chosen airplane build through his channel!

Bryan’s Channel is great. I’m a life long fabricator that always toyed with the idea of becoming a pilot and scratch building a plane. Having found him, Mike Patey, and a few other build focused channels really put it into perspective/reality. Currently I’m building jig tables while narrowing down a couple designs for a scratch build. Keep up the good work Bryan!

Do it! I love seeing people like me, that spent most of their life fabricating and building stuff, move into aviation like I am. It's fun to see the different skillsets brought into it. Also, build yourself about a 20' long jig table and you should be able to fit any scratch build fuselage on it. Mine is 4" wide and 20' long, setting at 32"' high right now, but I built the legs to be able to drop it down to about 18" when I start on the fuselage.

Christy, if Steve buys an already-built RV he may be able to still do his own condition inspections. If the plane's airworthiness is ELSA (Experimental Light Sport) he can take a 2 day class for about $450 and then he will get a repairman certificate for that aircraft. He will then be able to do the inspection and sign off each year. This save a great deal of expense. I took the class in OSH in 2017. It was Monday/Tuesday after AirVenture and taught in the EAA museum by Rainbow Aviation.

I went to CMHS in Bethalto, IL where Aviation 101 & 102 were actual courses. The high school owned a Luscombe 8A and a C150 . But unfortunately the school board got nervous and sold both aircraft and stopped the program. There were a few students that went on to become commercial pilots. One from my class works for Delta. Another one flies for UPS.

My high school offered a fully certified airframe and engine overhaul class program and we restored/rebuilt light aircraft airframes and engines as part of our high school curriculum - this was in the late 1940’s. It was wonderful.

A great episode! Really enjoyable. Christy Wong, I understand your concerns about your husband building an aircraft...I mean after all, aircraft are created by magicians, not mere mortals.... please know I am not teasing you, building an aeroplane truly is something out of a lot of people’s idea of possibility. It really is possible, just takes a bit of patience and perseverance...pilots have that. I have helped a bunch of people learn the skills needed to build their own aircraft, there are a lot of people who do. There are always people nearby ready and willing to help so don’t ever think you or your husband would be alone to build this thing. In this episode you touched on 2 of my favourite subjects, building your own aircraft, and aircraft mechanics. I am both, I started as an aircraft mechanic when I left school at 16, 23years later I’m still at it and I reckon I’m only about half way through. Here in Australia the average age of an L.A.M.E (equivalent to USAs A and P) is around 50 to 60 years old. Meaning the shortage for maintainers is as desperate as the pilot shortage. Without mechanics, pilots are just expensive pedestrians! Building your own aircraft truly is possible and very rewarding. Great to see Brian spreading the word about building and maintaining. Go for it!

Thanks Don. And the US has a similar mechanic problem. Going to get real interesting over the next ten years.

I've built experiments, I've owned them and I've flown a lot of them... It should be said that with an experimental amateur-built... if you built it, you can apply for the repairman's certificate. If you receive that certificate, it gives you the builder, the authority to do the conditional inspection. You can also do any minor alteration. That means avionics upgrades, engine maintenance, magneto changes, overhauls, anything up to a major alteration (see Appendix A to Part 43 www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/appendix-A_to_part_43). That list is pretty small, which means there's a huge list of things you _CAN_ do. So, if you purchase a home built which you do not hold the repairman's certificate for; you can _STILL_ do everything above _EXCEPT_ the conditional inspection. That annual condition inspection must be done by a licensed A&P, an inspector's authority (IA) is not required. I have found it far easier/cheaper to get a conditional inspection than a full part 23-style annual inspection. So owning a homebuilt is very very close to having built it... you just need to have an A&P that you work with once a year to do all the things you would normally do anyway.

  • @LightAndSportyGuy
    @LightAndSportyGuy 4 роки тому

Repairman's certificates and maintenance. Please allow me to offer some corrections to what was said - You do not need the repairman certificate to maintain / repair / alter an Experimental Amateur Built aircraft. Anyone can to that (FAR 43.1). The Repairman's certificate lets you do the condition inspection - and that's all it gets you. Also, the 51% rule applies to getting an airworthiness certificate - but not for the repairman certificate. See the FAA AC 20-27G.
So, Steve could do the repairs on a RV that he bought - no problem. But, he would have to hire an A&P for the condition inspection.

Christy.. Let the man build the plane in fact help him build it.. Great family time together and you both will lurn so much as you go I'm sure it will even help better understand the workings of the WW wrong worrier.. Just fallow the planes they are laid out step by step and at the end you have a plane.. With prepunched its just a big jigsaw puzzle

I was born in Rolla Missouri, it’s pronounced Raw-Lah.
Back on topic, I’m building a Wittman Tailwind. It’s a two seat high wing, airplane similar in size to a C-150, but cruises at 180-190 knots with a Lycoming O-320. The plans and materials kits are available at Aircraft Spruce, which happens to be just over a hundred miles from me.
I echo Bryan’s advice, and urge anyone interested in building an airplane to check out the EAA website that lists all the available aircraft options to build.

When I first got into flying there were so many negative opinions.. Don't buy arrow "T" tail.. Don't buy a "V" tail don't buy a cirrus they don't spin.. Don't buy the piper tomahawk they all crashes... Don't buy a mooney in less you have 1000 flying hrs.. And definitely don't put ur ass in a experimental aircraft.. It all left me with the only flying I did was commercially now wishing I built while I was younger and had the money
