How to draw in the Phantom Arcade/Fnf Artstyle (Part 1) Explanation and Basics

- In this part I’m just explaining what makes the PA style so unique and recognizable, and then going through the basic process of making a drawing.
As a beginner artist and want to learn this art style because I still haven't decided what style to commit, this video really HELPS alot. I ALSO HATE THOSE STICK MAN SKETCHES and hearing you say not to do that FUCK It's a breath of fresh air! Thanks for sharing this for real!
Yeah bro I hat em too
@@kaksauce3346 hat
Tried to learn to draw with stick man sketches for months cause I heard you need to create a foundation of a pose. My end results are stiff like bf's drawing (2:34). Its frustrating and takes all the fun away. Fuck 'em!
ngl I don’t use that type of stickman method, I kinda do what he mentioned when drawing the sketch at 2:05 . but I’ll use circles and stuff because it helps me know where I gotta put the hair and all that
@@GRgregori tried it nice time, I hated how my drawing looked while I was doing lineart. It made it SO DAMN STIFF I hated the end result. So yeah fuck em. Rough sketches is the way to go 👍🏽
I feel like you explained the very simple do's and don'ts when it comes to PhantomArcade's style, like the skeleton example, When I draw, I dont use a skeleton as a base, I just draw and just go with it like you explained, then I clean it up afterwards. All in all, this is a perfect video. 10/10
btw how phantom draws in perspective without a base or smh
okay phantom
Tbh this is actually a really great start to a guide on this style. I'm very excited to learn more about it, I honestly needed this.
hey rice!!!
Ayyy Rice ^^
indeed, rice
my own artstyle has been REALLY influenced by phantomarcade’s, so it’s nice to get a quick rerun on it. i barely do those complicated sketches on regular doodles which is honestly why i kinda like it
1:35 I’m so glad I’m not the only one bro.
I’m an artist that’s been studying the artsyle for quite a bit, so I gotta thank you for making this!
One thing that I absolutely love about this channel is not only the funny humor and phenomenal music, it’s the fact that I can’t tell which drawings are from phantom and your drawings, like, your style is exactly the same as his and it’s awesome, anyway this channel is underrated as FUUUUCK, keep up the awesome work!
Yo I'm so dang glad someone's finally made a video/tutorial on this. Dave's art style that he himself described as a combo of Jeff's, Egoraptor's, etc is genuinely one of my fav styles that vibes with Newgrounds' aesthetic to a T. I'm super lookin forward to more of what u gotta say on this and how dave stylises/caricatures shit in a way that is super appealing and dynamic.
*I also hope that you delve into Dave and evilsk8er's process in the way they collab and bounce concept/character designs off each other that blends into the final designs.* I find collabs like that super interesting as it allows for more variety and individual input into what makes an appealing design when it's passed around between other artists and how they stylise specific aspects.
*I also love what u said bout not sticking to a skeleton base/construction.* The FNF artstyle is as u said, super simplified but also extremely particular in how it deforms anatomy and exaggerates poses/facial expressions. I def agree that when it comes to extremely cartoony artstyles that a super strict and 'correct' anatomy/proportions and a super planned out base structure is almost NEVER as important as having a dynamic gestural pose/line work, exaggerated features that are clearly defined, varying line weight, colours that pop, simple but well placed shadows/highlights, etc.
I find myself when sketching to have an extremely light and simple foundation but worrying bout details, proportions and anatomy till later and focusing on getting interesting poses, dynamic gestures and varying lines that compliment each other.
Either way, amazing job with past videos and def excited for more of this series!!

The expressions are my FAVORITE thing about his artstyle and its something i need to do with mine so thank you for making this a series cause its gonna help me alot
Bro, THANK YOU. You have no idea what I've been going through searching on the internet for an ACTUAL tutorial teaching the basics. Now I'm actually hyped for part 2, I can't wait to make actual FNF sprites. You earned yourself a sub man, keep it up! 👍
Jesus, this is amazing. I have a dream to be good at art, and I can’t even draw a good looking stick figure cause I’m so damn bad at drawing a smooth line. Thanks for this man, maybe I can finally get good at art by doing this. I know I just need to commit to it to be good, but I need a place to start. You are an absolute legend.
Thank you so much for this! The phantom arcade style has always interested me for a long time, because of it's simple but very expressive artstyle. honestly the way he draws faces and emotions, etc + poses and just the general body makes it look so dynamic and cool to look at.
You just made me realize why I've been having such a huge problem with drawing anatomy when it comes to Phantom Arcade's style.
I always hated drawing those stickman/skeleton things bro thx man
2:19 BRO YES SOMEBODY GETS ME😭💀😭💀😭💀 Istg I never draw stick figure sketches and like my friends in middle school would be confused on why I never used the method. If anything- I feel like it gives drawings personally and charming imperfections
Me too
In all honesty when I first saw your videos, I thought phantom arcade themselves made the drawings, or you maybe you were a dev of fnf- but I can say that you did an amazing job!
Pretty decent video, icl. Personally, on the topic of the skeleton, depending on the nature of it, it actually isn't a bad idea to use one, especially if you want to maintain consistency with proportions, which is especially important in animation. Really, the important thing is just making sure that the skeleton is flexible, allowing for tons of different gestures and viewpoints.
For example, when I draw, I use the fred morre head and a combination of the bean and flour sack torso because not only are they simple, but they are extremely flexible, allowing for a lot of expressiveness, and are versatile, allowing for lots of different body types and gestures, all while maintaining consistent proportions. The ones you showed seem to involve way too much anatomic guess work and limited flexibility/versatility, so yeah, using those would be a terrible idea for any artist IMO.
For the Style in question, Skeletal sketches are a horrible idea. The fnf style isn’t proportionally accurate as explained in the video and using a very specific sketch will just limit the bouncy and flush look of it. The skeleton sketch is definitely not a bad thing, especially for beginner artist, but definitely not for this Artstyle
@@DaThugWizard Fair enough. I've found that it works extremely well for me, though, just by using a bean for the body and a circle for the head while stretching and squashing it when needed, while still being able to be extremely accurate to PA's artstyle, so maybe it just depends on the artist.
Wow. This is actually nice. Not only do i have a better insight on the FNF artstyle, but now I have a better outlook on trying to draw someone or something. Thank you! ^^
Pretty amazing dude!!! Looking forward for part 2!
I'm glad somebody's been able to explain the art style because every time I try to I just don't know the right words since I'm not a artist. Like how the anatomy for the style kinda doesn't make any sense but that it's obviously on purpose
Actually really great video! Even tho I still cant perfectly nail the PA style, Ive been drawing for one year and I see some progress! This video didnt teach me something very new, but I see you put a lot of effort into it!
For those who still cant draw well or draw in PA style, dont give up. Like seriously, after blood sweat, and sh*t ton of drawings, youll get there. Art can be very hard, and thats ok. It took me 9 months of learning perspective, practicing line confidence, and I can finally draw bf's head pretty accurate!
Just dont be rude to yourself. You can do it.
I like how this "How to draw in FNF style" is being shown almost 2 years after the "demo" released.
Dude! TYSM for this tutorial,i´ve searched so much for an actual fnf artstyle tutorial and its finally here!!
Bro I’ve been an “FNF artist” for a brick now. But you’ve opened my eyes to a bunch of new shit.⚠️🔥🚫💯💯
I kinda knew how to do PhantomArcade artstyle, i have been watching his working or teaching streams, that is where i got a little bit of experience, liked that video a lot
Same
Ah... okay my lines was waaay too clean and I don't stylized enough, thank you! Thank you! Can't wait for part 2!
this actually helps a lot, i really wanted to learn Phantom's artstyle since fnf became famous.
This was VERY helpful, i've been struggling to draw the PA artstyle for a while, and i sadly used the dogshit skeleton sketch method, thankfully i stopped and now i got the handle of it
I feel like the skeleton method does work for certain art styles, but certainly not this one. Phantomarcade's style has always been more random and free than you'd typically expect, with even characters within the game itself having very large differences between one another, which imo fits for a game based on newgrounds. However if you already know the rules of your art style, and want to draw them more consistently each time, I feel like the skeleton method does work for that. although it's better to make your own skeleton rather than draw one based on real human anatomy, since you can fuck with proportions more. Great guide! I'm impressed with how in-depth you went, and will definitely help people learn to draw in this unique art style!
Dang, ThugWiz. This looks great! I'm surprised that the way you draw isn't that different from how I do this artstyle! I somewhat agree on the "stickman method thing," it just... it takes skill and can be helpful. Especially when you're animating. It's funny because the entire point of PhantomArcade anatomy is that it's not anatomy, if that makes any sense. Do you still want your forms and proportions to be consistent? Yes, absolutely! But that's what character sheets are for. I do think that the stick method helps for drawing things like hands, but even then it's difficult to keep track of what your doing. (Again it works for me personally, but that's with years of practice, and it depends on preference.) In all, great job Wiz! Can't wait for part 2!
Pretty awesome dude
Man this tutorial drawing of your art style stuff looks so good and keep up the good work Wiz. 👍

bvanger video bro. cant wait 4 part 2
Makes me feel extremely good and not lazy at the fact that I don't use that damn skeleton shit.
Didn't know not using it could be a staple in someone's stylized art.
This was super helpful, I'mm use these tips to make some damn good art
1:10 this was so funny for no reason
I love your videos
holy shit this has to be the most helpful fnf tutorial
Sick vid also so damn true PA art style is awesome
Bro thank you so much i been wanting to draw like phantom arcade for soooo longg and know you helped me thank so much agian your a real one
I usually use phantom arcade fnf live streams as a reference
I didn't know how much I needed that "stop using stickman" quip until now.I was starting to get curious as to why I felt like dying every time I drew a model and then the character. Stylized things, especially ones that look like this, don't need anatomy too often unless others need to draw them constantly. Though, is it okay draw some kind of skeleton to get the feel of what shapes are used, how they move, that kind of thing?
This helped me so much even if it’s just the basics
POV: “Pen says “ I’ll call dream island, Pen Island no spaces all caps!”
As a artist myself I'm ngl my bf and gf look wonky when I draw them so this tutorial is VERY much needed thank you brah 😎👍
