- The Hawaii-based non-profit Hula Preservation Society has spent over three years documenting the stories of the young dancers and singers of the Hotel Lexington's Hawaiian Room, open for an amazing 30 years (1937 - 1966) in the heart of New York City! In 2012, Filmmaker Ann Marie Kirk (who was HPS's videographer on the oral histories) put together the first-cut of a full length documentary on these wonderful, inspiring (now) elders and their life-changing experiences in New York 50+ years ago.
Thank you to all of our Kickstarter pledgers for your support! "The Hawaiian Room" project was successfully funded, which allowed HPS and Ann Marie to complete this documentary film in the fall of 2014. It debuted in New York City in October 2014 and here on O'ahu at the 'Oiwi Film Festival in November 2014.
"The Hawaiian Room" will ultimately be released on DVD and available for purchase. If you are interested in knowing when that happens and how to order, please email admin@hulapreservation.org to be kept informed.
