  • It’s going to take hours for the Don Valley Parkway to be cleared after heavy rainfall flooded the Greater Toronto Area with almost 100 millimetres of rain on Tuesday, according to the city.

      @@professorakiba434 Toronto was constructed in a valley. Summer storms have been happening since the dawn of time so if the dingalings that run the city actually planned for these things then yes it should have been planned for and not an issue.
      My grandpa said something similar happened during hurricane Hazel and that was like 70 years ago, soooo…. Not to mention a similar storm that took place in 2013. You’d think they’d learn from this and spend the taxpayers money wisely instead of virtue signalling and renaming landmarks.

    I live downtown and thankfully work from home. I knew it was raining but I had no idea it was this bad. Fortunately we never lost power!!
    I also had one client cancel a visit because she was still stuck in the floods...

    The streets are pretty much built to flood here in this city lol. Lots of depressions in the road where literal pools form in softer rains.

      The drainage, I agree...but Toronto is one of the greenest cities in the world. There are something like 20 trees for every person. Get your facts straight.

      The city has been working on this since 2013, rerouting the Don was supposed to help. What happened?

      @@EvelynSaungikar The rerouting isn't quite finished...there are two concrete plugs that have to be removed for the river to flow all the way to Polson Pier. Apparently, these won't be removed until the end of the year (according to Waterfront Toronto).

    You're so right, Heather Wright..This rain event was reminiscent of July 8, 2013.
    There was widespread flooding and power outages in Toronto.; roads became rivers. Much like that event, the Bloor-Islington area was the last to get its power back on after 36 hours. In both events, it was a Wednesday when power returned to Bloor-Islington.

      It is. Did you know a friend of mine who isn't environmentally thinking changed his whole energy grid so he could save on energy costs.     It’s because of Toronto’s terrible sewer system. I’ve been saying it for decades. The rain water and the sewage water have to be separated. Toronto has a history of filling in creeks. The garrison creek is one very important one

      I'm getting the sewer system may need a change but you need to realize that this was a very powerful storm that dumped a month worth of rain in one hour. That isn't chump change as far as water is concerned and no sewer system can withstand that.

    All the work rerouting the Don river, new catch basins, the work at Ashbridges bay, disconnecting downspouts, was supposed to fix this!

      When you get a month’s worth of rain in a few hours, it’s not feasible for the infrastructure to handle. There has been a lot of rain already as well. The downtown core having a lot of concrete doesn’t help. Don Valley has flooded before but my son works downtown and was able to get home . He just waiting until after 6 to drive home to Markham.

    2 hours after the storm, children needed rescue of the lake in Oak, when upstream waters pushed dozens of boats downstrem into marina. Hitting 50 or more boats, pushed into the lake. The children rescued by police & rescue boats, hours later. Sails boats dragged to shore, many boats waited for their owners to rescue the boats!

    We had witnessed the flooding of DVP near lakeshore in previous years but nothing was done to address the problem. The Don river alongside DVP is too shallow due to siltation and fallen trees. Dredging was never done. If only the river and canal connecting the lake will be deepened, flooding will not happen.
    Drainage and sewers must be cleaned by removing the leaves, plastics and other debris.
