  • After the first three legs, Oregon's Edward Cheserek and Villanova's Jordy Williams needed to run a 3:55 to break the 16:00 barrier. Instead we got something even rarer. The most tactical/delicious race in Penn Relays history! Villanova pull off the upset to win the 2015 Penn Relays 4xmile championship.

+Screamin There's a time for every kind of race. Headplay like in this one is interesting. Those who thought they had the best kick could hang back of the leader(s) and wait. Those who knew they didn't could or should have made a break earlier when it was brought to a jog. 50 yrs ago, Gerry Lindgren would have sprinted mid-race and just kept on going. Ches just miscalculated. He should taken it in with 400 or 600 to go.

You can be mad about what Chez did but he is one of the few runners who could make the entire pack slow down. Most runners would tr and pass when it got that slow. The reason Chez's strategy worked is because it is extremely draining for a runner to lead the pack. Chez figured he could easily run whatever someone else paced and then kick harder at the end.The smartest race was run by the guy who went the exact same pace as chez the entire time and didn't try and pass until the end.

As incredibly slow as they ran the final leg, the splits were about 66 - 70 - 65 - 53 for a 4:14 mile. Not world class but still fast enough to make me wonder how they can do that while looking so slow.
Also, I'm no purist, but the tactics don't bother me at all. Very interesting actually. Do people boo at an intentional walk in baseball, or when runners save their energy in preliminary rounds? (no) But since it did not work for Cheserek, in hindsight it is an obvious error in this case.

Nobody races anymore. 1975 ( Filbert Bayi - 1999 Hicham El Guerrouj)The best years in middle distant running. Just my Opinion. Oh yea....After Sir Roger Bannister broke the mile WR and within 2 yrs about 2 dozen people broke 4:00 miles... After the science and medical establishment of the day said you had to be 7' 4" tall with a stride so long to break it. Great period also. I'm waiting patiently for the next great milers and middle distant runners.

UPenn has their track in a really old, historic building. Given the dimensions of the building they can't fit a full sized track. So instead of tearing down a historic building, they made the track smaller by making lane 5 400m around instead of lane 1. I think it's actually pretty cool and very distinctive. You should watch a 4x400. The teams that start in lanes 1 to 4 have to cut out to lane 5 instead of everyone cutting in.

It's like punting in football or playing a lot of possession in soccer. The goal is to win, not run the fastest time ever. There is nothing sad about a tactical race. It is a good strategy in many situations and makes the sport unpredictable. If there were no tactics, you could read down the list of PRs and tell us who the winner is without even running the event most of the time. And what isn't exciting about a sub 53 last lap?

Connor Harriman no a 53 lap is amazing. But it wasn't even at the end of a mile. It was jist a 53 lap. This race should have been a 4 by mile. Not whatever this was. And no, upsets happen without people being cowards. Its not like the guy with the fastest pr always wins.

      agreed. this race is a 4xmile. not a 4x400.

Tactical races are just boring. No one wants to watch jogging for 90% of the race just for a dead sprint

Every person in that top group of the final leg who didn't win is a coward. And the winner is a genius.

While I don’t love the strategy to just tank the field, you do have to remember that the other runners chose to go along with this strategy, Chez’s move doesn’t work unless everybody slows with him, so do not put it all on one runner.

This is an embarrassment to the sport of track and field. I understand the need to run a tactical race. What I don't understand is WALKING during a race. That was ridiculous.

I understand why everyone is so mad, but even as a track runner myself I thoroughly enjoyed this race and Edward genuinely made me giggle a few times. He was literally just messing with everyone the entire time.
