Chad, has a pitch hopper ever lost grip on you before? We have pivot tools that I absolutely hate but my boss thinks that they’re better than the pitch hopper. I love your videos 👍. I’ve learned so much from your content. It helps me with doing my own inspections & restoration work.
If you extend your body up the roof and push in a parallel direction, the pitch hopper will move. If you keep pressure in a relatively straight down manner, it won’t slide.
Yep, brand new roof leaked second rain. Actually hired the most expensive roofer since insurance payed for it. Flashing is terrible, and leaklike crazy. Its a pretty simple small block chimney. Can't find quality workmanship anymore..

Iooking a lot better! If you are repointing a chimney do you always use type N? Would you use that for a crown wash as well or is type S ok in your opinion? Always seeing it done with type S in eastern MA. -appreciate your videos-
I always use type N on anything, unless it’s below grade or structural. Mortar doesn’t make for a good crown-wash, it’ll crack. You could use a bag of type s mortar if you added a shovel full of Portland cement, that would work.
@@chadvaillancourt the solvent dissolves the film of tar and I use sponges to blot off the rest. I sometimes follow with mineral spirits then Varn 600 if it has to show.
I totally agree with your comments about Guatemalans/Latino laborers. In my neighborhood, these guys are super hard workers, looking for work in the Home Depot parking lot in every kind of weather. Some guys have pretty good skills just from rural/village life. A lot of us (born in the USA) don't have their work ethic. You oughta move out on your roofing company concept.
If I move to Guatemala, I’m probably not going to be lining up much work, no matter my skill. As someone in the trade, the Guatemalans don’t work any harder than anyone else…people LOVE saying this…not a modicum of truth to it…makes NPCs feel good to regurgitate.
Why would a builder put the chimney in the valley? They did similar on my house, a 6.5’x2’ wood framed. And it leaked for approximately 40-50 years it appears. From the halfassed repairs. For a gas fireplace vent. I tore it out.
Usually, this would fall on the architect. There is a huge difference between theoretical experience and practical experience. Most engineers and architects have zero on the job experience, so there is a major disconnect between what works and what doesn't. It all looks good on paper to them, and they don't get the call back when something fails.

Gary Ireland Contracting in Pittsburgh uses Amish boys to put his roofs on. I guess it is sub contracting type thing. I didn't know when I hired him that he didn't have his own crew. They did mostly okay, but nailed thru flashing that ended up leaking over the porch roof. It took two years to finally get fixed - luckily I had a warranty thru GAF and they sent another company out, ripped off the roofing over the porch and discovered the flashing error and made the correction. The Amish flashed my two chimneys, but they smeared brown caulking all over the brick to seal the aluminum flashing - it doesn't look professional and was weak - poor workmanship. I ended up having to correct a lot of what they did myself. Gosh forbide you say anything to Gary Ireland about anything they do on your own home. When the put most of the drip edge on, they shot the nails out the side of the drip edge. I pointed out to the owner of Ireland Contracting and he called me Anal and reluctantly removed and replaced. It is amazing how most contractors have such a condescending attitude towards your own home for which you pay them to perform work. They act as if they are doing you a favor. I see now that GAF dropped him as a recommended installer.
The issue you have is with unrestricted, unfettered capitalism, which will always seek maximum profit as the expense to almost everything else. It took me almost my entire life to finally accept this, but it's true. Keep up the good work!

That looked like an ideal candidate for a rebuild! Nice job cleaning it up and prepping it for a “restoration”. That job seemed like a soul-sucker!!!

I take tar off with a heat gun and wallpaper scraper. Them i use a tar solvent branded "Genie"

Abc supply sells them if you have a store in your area.
There’s not abc supply around here but was able to find them at a roofing place. Thank you.
