CARTA: Permanent Body Modification Throughout Our History

- Today, permanent body modification (PBM) is very popular. Studies suggest that well over a billion living people have experienced one or more types of PBM. But what is the history of PBM? When did the different types originate? Were they invented recently, or do they have a long history? Did they appear simultaneously or at different times? This presentation examines evidence in non-human animals and extinct hominins, delving into early archaeological and historical records of seven main PBM types: tattooing, scarification, amputation, piercing, genital modification, dental modification, and bone shaping. Strong evidence supports human PBM for at least 15,000 years, with intriguing hints suggesting a history dating back as far as 80,000 years. [Show ID: 39467]

A suggestion for the presenter. Put less pictures in a slide, ideally one example per slide, it is hard to follow the talk otherwise

If you cannot find a modern example of humans intentionally amputating fingers occums razor would have to predict this was an accident. Fingers are way to important especially the pinky and ring finger as they are used to stabilize the arm.
Some people have done it. Lad bible posted a video about body modification and a woman had part of her finger amputated for the aesthetic.

Female genital mutilations often result in infection, sterility or death, yet they are still widely performed. Removal of front teeth makes feeding much more difficult (how do you bite into your food without those teeth^^?), yet that was done too. Cranial deformation would regularly lead to brain damage, yet they were done until recently in various parts of the world. So by comparison, loosing a pinky is a relatively minor handicap.
