King Black Dragon was Runescape's first boss, dating all the way back to September 24th of 2002. Lets take a time machine back to 2002 and look at the history of king black dragon (kbd) as well as the changes made to it. Also we will take a look at how hard it was back in runescape classic and early 2004 runescape.

I think the year was 2003, so I was around 8 years old me and some friends gathered around an old boulder of a monitor and watched my friend walk north with only rumors of demons and a ladder leading to a level that took you to a dragon. After a few attempts of even getting there we witnessed the dragon we heard tale of.. then my friend got 1 hit and died. I love these videos they really bring me back dude!!
This made me wanna go play RSC again. So I got onto a vanilla server I play on, tried KBD, got the shield drop at 6kc. Absolutely insane.
I remember soloing kbd without pots at around 90 cb. I felt like a boss way way back in the day.
Be real with us you forgot your pots and didnt feel like going back to the bank.
I remember d med being right at 1M in mid to late 2005 as I believe it was still best in slot non degrading defensive helm
It was the best nondegrading until the fremennik quests which I believe early 07.
I second it being 1m in early and summer 2005. It was ugly, but it was the only thing better than a rune large. Dragon chain+med was hot shit back in those days.
Freminik Trials was 2004. Freminik Isles was 2007
2.3mill-2.4mill for the longest time
@@natsfan100 true, but I think most players didn’t realize how much better offensive bonuses were to defensive bonuses back then. I remember always wanting to be tanky so I wouldn’t die and lose my stuff
Rs classic player here. It’s true that jagex didn’t release the location info for kbd straight away. But iirc, it was found within a day and posted on some kind of forums. I remember the info was being shared on AIM when hunting for kbd
Can confirm.
Damn, I remember doing KBD trips after school with a friend who has now passed. Good times. I used to say the same thing as the players in the vid--"spread"--as if spreading out would slow the KBDs attack speed lol
It was more or less an open secret where the KBD was. Besides being distracted by some beef with the Saber Clan, I wasn't really too focused on the wilderness- aside to scavenge some stuff for starting cash. I did my best to steer clear of all the clan wars and such that tended to happen back in my day, so I can't really attest to _how_ many people knew _exactly_ where it was.
_I_ was one of those players in RS1, who used to log into areas like the Red Dragon Island in the wilderness, in a Free world, to safely grab whatever items I could. Black items of any kind tended to sell extremely well.
But I didn't bother with the KBD until RS2- back when the Mirror Shield still had a reflective surface, and things like buckets had textures as detailed as the foliage on trees & bushes. I always notice those. _Always._
EDIT:
Also, you're welcome. Non-consecutive bills only, please.
I got a dragon medium helm day the boss came out. Sold it for 35m GP. More money than my 12yo mind knew what to do with... So I got 99 cooking.
cap
@@sleepax4792 fym cap you got raeped
Noob!
Based
KBD makes me remember way back in classic. Before black weapons/armor were introduced you could wield rune with 1 attack or defense.
Oh and to answer your question about kbd. I heard through the grapevine it was deep in the wild and went with some buddies to check it out. We got ass blasted by that mofo.
Damn, this is all great info
Thank ya!
Best content, love the videos man your making so many
Thanks! Yeah I have a bit of extra time while dealing with college classes this summer haha
I remember it being around 2.4m when I played, I was a noob though so I never bought one, I only saw it advertised
I like how you used the Gerudo Valley song in your video.
Love the gerudo valley theme
In RuneScape classic, couldn’t you take prayer potions to kbd and use a prayer called “paralyze monster” to negate its melee attack? I remember that but didn’t see it mentioned here
6:15 RIP that guy with a d hally 😂
Edit: just watch that guy get slapped a 60 and commence to eat what MUST be salmon or worse food.. bro it was a struggle back then
Not sure about 02 but 3 years later at 3:47 am on a school night dreams were made at fire giants! I got a dragon med that later was sold for 2.5 million gold! I remember that like it was the day I became a true scaper!
D Med helm was going for about 2-3mil back in 2003-2004, For reference Phats for going for around 5-6m at this point in time.
I remember selling a yellow partyhat for approximately 3m at the time and using some of the money for a dragon med helm. it was 1.1m~ at the time
I’d say that’s a good trade
Its so easy now, ive had all drops including prince black dragon pet, dozens of kbd heads @ about 750KC, many kills per trip. Its refreshing to see people in 2006 attempting to kill it wearing steel armour / no helms / without praying lol, back when people had no idea what they were doing & no g.e so it wad alot harder to gain items
man your content is the best , keep going strong brother
The farthest I ever got in Classic was killing cows, mining and smithing. Didn't start playing hard until 04/RS2 when my buddy got me into it for real. I did my first 24hr RS game session at age 11 on the family computer, lol.
did ur family say anything for being on there for 24 hrs lol
@@Aaeie Haha, it was a Sat to Sun and my mom was sick in bed. Dad was at work 3rd shift back then. So, no one even knew until I said I didn't sleep. Didn't have to do to church since my mom was sick. That's why I was able to do it XD My mom just said something along the lines of, "Wow, that's a long time on the computer." Haha, I had told her it's a really fun game. :p
D Med was around 1.5-2.5m depending how long you waited. i managed to buy at 1.8m and sell for 2.5m
Great audio in this video! Love this.
Been working on it! Used a compressor, noise gates, and a few of your tips. Much appreciated!
it was steady around 2.3m back in rsc
i remember getting my first dragon med back around when it was released. The dragon med along with the dragon sword and battle axe back then never had their own graphics, they shared the same graphics as the rest of the med helms and long swords and battle axes. They looked a lot like bronze armour actually and people got scammed alot. I remember getting my first D med when it has the same graphic as regular med's so this was pretty close to release, and i recall paying just above 3m for it, between 3.5m and 3m
I vaguely remember when kbd came out. I remember a map being posted where it was located on a forum around Thanksgiving or Christmas. I don't remember pricing for it.
Dragon med was sold for 2.4 million
Really loving that Ocarina of time ost in the background.
Dragon meds were worth about 1-1.2 mil in April 2005 when I bought my first. So I'm sure they were worth closer to 2m in RSC days
if i remember right kbd drained your prayer so you couldn't use the paralyze monster prayer
Also paralyze monster prayer was a thing so you could use that to remove any and all damage. AS a kid and going through all of the game and getting to see the KBD legend in person it was at the time awe inspiring.
In 2002 it was 2mill. However its true price was ridiculously low (below 50k), so if you died with full rune on then you would lose the helmet if it was above the 3 item threshold as rune plate etc was over 50k. A full rune set street price was 250k helm, 2h, plate, legs, kite.
I remember getting my first dmed from black demons around 03 it went for around 900k it was the biggest drop I've ever gotten at that time
people found kbd day 1 i seen one being sold around 2m no idea if they sold it that week but most people wouldnt sell
you use to be able to trade the dragon med for a party hat very pog
bro i love your channel
Regarding the price of a dragon med helm around rs classic->rs2 transition period. I started about 6 months after RS2 release.
Highest/Earliest somewhat stable at the time prices I remember best about 1 year into rs2 at fally park:
- D med in 2002 (1.8-2.5m)
- full gilded (4.5-5.5m)
- blue phat (24m)
- red phat (18m)
- white phat (20-22m)
- green phat(14-16m)
- yellow phat(16-18m)
- Green H'mask (7m)
- blue H'mask (10-13m)
- red H'mask (9-14m)
- Santa hat (2.5m-10m during xmas)
- d legs after kalphite release(7m)
- whip (7-9m)
Some are mentioning paying/getting prices up to 30m+ for a dmed, even in the early rs2 days the highest price for d med in rs2 never went over 5m-7m. I have no doubt tho on release in the early days of kbd its very likely some paid a pretty penny to have it first. But quickly by 2003 1.8-2.5m became the norm while it was still BIS item. Early botting took its toll on kbd drops. Not much later borrows/GWD armor sadly meant the d med Era was over :(
u could also lure the kbd along one of its walls so it couldnt attack u but u could still melee it
you know shit is oldschool when it takes a bunch of dudes to kill KBD and one of them says "i hit a 21"
Swear on everything I just got a d med helm from kbd as you were talking about it 😂😂
Haha, very nice!
Go sell it for 2 millio-... I mean, Alch it for 60k!
damn great video brother.
On classic you could block it with a second account... first attacks it... runs away through second account and kbd was aggro to the first so you could just mage it. You took a couple damage per cast but nothing compared to meleeing it... could get a lot more kills per trip.
I sold a d med we we got in a trio group back in 2003 maybe earlier maybe slightly later. We sold it for 2 mil
7:16
Amazing pathing, very cool, jagex!"
I remember the d med going for around 2.2-2.4m back in the early 2002-2003 days - similiar to the red party hat price.
It was definitely around 2.4mil in 2003-2004. Others claiming 900k are definitely overestimating how early they played because I went on a several month crusade trying to acquire one for 2.4mil. I eventually finally got one killing Blue Dragons under the Heroes guild. Which I was farming for bones and hide with my dragon halberd through the fence specifically to get enough gold to buy it. About 3 hours after I got it I got scammed and lost it lmao. This was my first quitting of Runescape.
I go and kill the KBD today in RS3 just for laughs and a bit of memory lane travels. Got 5 KBD heads at the moment lmao.
Haha, very nice
Dragon medium helmet was around 1.5-2.0M during classic until the end.
I been playing since the very start... I started playing back in like spring time of 2001
i think it was 3-5m around release maybe more the first few weeks but stayed steady at 1-2.5m from like 2003-2005 heavily used for staking builds or high def magers
8:14 This sounds like some sort of creepy pasta lol. "If you say yes to them." "if you say no to them.".
That was also before there were "Parties" i believe
Keep making making the good content!
Thanks!
@@therunescapehistorian Do barrows brothers next, the armours were crazy significant when it was first released
@@XericOSRS thats a really good idea
phenomenal job
I remember the helm being maybe like 1 mil? and the dragon kite/square was like 2.1 mil to 2.5 mil...but that was a lot of money back then it. It would take me like a month of playing by fishing lobs and certing them and selling them to just buy a med helm.
I used to buy dragon med helms from anywhere between 850k to 1.3m, I would often sell them for 1.4m-1.6m, but it wasn't easy.
I used forums mainly, but often stood spamming in w2 falador park, this was tiring and I always had the concept of xp waste, which nobody seemed to understand.
So i'd put out a forum post, then go back to training my skills.
I didn't just merchant d meds, I'd also merch rune items, I remember having 80 rune axes , 15 rune plates, and a fluctuating stock pile of rune weapons, being really proud of it, showing my wealth on in trade. and being fawned over by female player characters, who i'd spend money to equip in rune armour.
Best of all, was my legends cape, when the quest was released, as I was high enough level to complete it early on.
People would follow me around because of that cape.
I never liked buying party hats and santas, because I understood that they gave no stats, again, xp waste.
yeah 1 mil gp when it first came out. I remember seeing a guy with it just hours after the initial update standing around in Draynor flexing lol
I love how organized their way to kbd was at around 6 minutes :D Looks like they are going to tob or something haha. Good old days
wheres the song that plays in the beginning from? i know just cant think of it.
I was playing at that time. When kbd released me and like 20 of my game friends went to try and fight it. We got a few kills a trip but that's about it
Also dragon medium helm waa 1.5m about when it was released.
Please do history of the chaos elemental next!
Confirmed. I bought a dragon med helm for over a million back in the day.
6:40 there were 10 “lol’s” in the timespan of one minute, I don’t know how to feel
How is rsc design of the kbd better than rs2? They should’ve kept the colors the same and just added the heads
The discrepancy in combat level is likely just because the formula to calculate combat level changed from classic to rs2 for npc and players alike. Pretty much every player and monster’s combat level changed unless you were level 3
When I first started in 2004 dragon med helm was around 100k
D med was almost 10m on release day
i loved doing kbd
Bro start your Ironman rsc series again on openrsc uranium it’s alive 1x server!
so much this!
I can remember getting visage 4x when they were 32m
A bit before rs2 was coming out, a D med was common yet still worth about 1.8m last I remembered. I just managed to always see @ran@ Selling D Med 1.8m press 123
D med averaged 1m when rs2 Beta was released. Glory ammy was 100k. D Sq was around 2m, could get for 1.6.
After rs2 released, d med was 2.5m and dsq was 7m. Although those prices were closer to barrows release, but obviously pre-barrows.
I was a PKer in Classic , so i didnt do pvm tbh, i trained my skills at the dwarf mine camp thing, killing dwarfs 😂 i was STOKED when i got a R2H
The original first boss was the black knight, besides that though this really was truly the first big boss
I really wish they’d go back to releasing content that gave very little info about it and you have to figure it out you self
I fully agree, makes the community come together to solve things
@@therunescapehistorian seems like a cool idea and I like it a lot but unfortunately that’s not how people play anymore and also with the prevalence of Reddit, Twitter, etc. the location would be dropped everywhere within 20 minutes.
Wish we could still have those exciting moments like going into the wilderness as complete noobs.
They did that with the hazelmire signet ring in rs3 I think
I'm actually so glad I didn't play back in classic. Literally every design choice is meant to slow you down and make the game annoying. Hiding the bosses, the 3 attack cycles before you can eat, the noting 1 item at a time at the bank, NPCs only being able to talk to a single person at a time. Like what the hell. If I played through that I don't think I would have ever gotten into Osrs.
That Ocarina of Time music. Shit man going to make me to play that again
Lol! Love that game, havent played it in a long while but it is my favorite zelda game ( havent looked into the newer ones, lack of time).
I played back then but was still a need rocking run thinking it was the best XD
Haha, it was still pretty good at the time
Just like everything in RuneScape. Drop day has always been outrageous pricing.(think granite maul being 100m day one). Eventually it would level out around 2 mil and stay there until RuneScape 2 came out.
Ey yo got Zelda Oot music in the background
i rember dmed were about 1.5mil/2m depends on seller
I played back in 2001 to 2004. I wont drop my ingame name cause I still cant access it till this day. I was too young to have my own email per parents rules.. I am 32 Now and just started playing again 7 or so months ago.. I had to make a new account as did everyone else.
Dragon Med helm was 20Mil in its earliest release days. It may have dropped to 2Mil but when I quit in 2004, It was still maybe 10 to 15M and Dragon Chain was bonkers expensive when KQ came out. We disnt necessarily have to search too much. But we did go in groups to push groups out or pk our way out to it and if we had resources or enough people come.. we would just farm farm farm and honestly rarelyyyyy ever saw someone get the helm. Rune chain and rune 2h swords were the meta for a LONG time. Magic was OP too. Anyways, this was also when say Yellow PHat was 20Mil..
Im enjoying all this new stuff they added to the game. Some more than others. Wish the old barter system was still available or the way trading was done.
I love that pet
You can range it together
Me and my friend were really excited about kbd, until we found out its location.... Needless to say 9 / 10 year olds on combat lv 40 or so accounts with full mithril, we were not going to touch that xD
Still has the best pet
Got the kbd pet at 79 kills lol
I was over 3k kc and still didn't get the pet lmfao. Cringe game. RsN- Pkforfun
No I’m not sure if it’s a hurried hunt but it’s just too crazy
I have some old videos of killing the kbd in 2002 I was the first ever recorded to kill it
Upload it!
dragon med was 2-3m in the beginning
Classics map isn't huge it probably didn't take more than an hour to find kbd
nice! found this vid while doing kbd loll wth
i was just a mere babe when i played classic so there was no way I was on any magical hunts for the kbd
I bought a d med in late 04 for 900k, I saw them go for 1.2m around then, even into 05 they floated around a mil
I paid 3.5m for my first d med a couple weeks after It's release. I came out of Draynor bank to show It off and was keylogged later lmao.
I got keylogged a day after I made my first mil. For some reason it didn't bother me and I randomly try to think of why every so often lol
@@3runjosh I'm not gonna lie... I was pissed! Like raging at the time. My very first account had 97 smithing, 96 mage and 95 mining on classic. They were my 3 favorite skills and still are. I used those skills to save up to buy my first d med. I walked all over Draynor and Lumby because that's where everyone staked back then. I was showing off my richness lmfao. A guy caught me as I was walking out of Draynor bank and said Hey man I'll trade you anything Inside my bank or everything for your d med. I remember thinking I'm fixing to clean this guy and not only have enough to buy another d med but enough left to buy some of my gear left. He asked for my email and I gave It to him, he sent me a link and I kept clicking It over and over and every time It said something like failed to open or something. A few hours later I login and everything Is gone. Looking back I think... Why the fuck didn't you just have the guy to trade you for the d med? So stupid as a kid lmao. Back then the trade screen only had 12 squares If I remember correctly and putting money up was a nightmare and long process. Didn't have the option to put "X" amount. You just had to hold down on your stack of coins until you had the right amount and often It would speed up so you usually went past and then had to once again hold down on the stack of coins to remove them lol.
they never told you
Dragon Meds went for alot more then 1m-2m. I can remember being a merchant and I sold and bought them for anything between 5m-10m.
Party hats just cost millions those days.
I wish I hadn't died with all my rares when Rs2 came in 😂😂😂😂😐
I had maybe 40 phats 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I remember trading 7 Santa hats for a D med. Santas were 1.2m at the time.
Dammmm, thanks for the info!
santas were 200k when dmeds were 1-2m in early rs2
easy like for the music...
