    You know what? This is one of the best reviews of these three super adventure bikes I've seen ... normal guys reviewing extraordinary motorcycles. You have said what I've heard many "normal" people say, including the GS being the most forgiving of them which is a very very important attribute since the more riding you do, the more mistakes you are likely to make. Well done!

    It's amazing how many people love the R 1200 GS. It wasn't one of the bikes being reviewed and yet it gets a big mention at the end.

    • @wol9ver6ine
      @wol9ver6ine 8 років тому

      +Warwick Hunter I found it funny that they compare 3 bikes and IMHO pick the bike that wasn't in the comparo but it should have been since the SA is more like the GS then the XR or the MS so if the KTM SA qualifies then the BMW GS qualifies. If you are brand loyal either will work but for me I'd pick the one that better suited my purpose, Mountains, GS, spirited riding, XR, offroad adv, KTM SA and a mixture of all, BMW GSA.

    Fully agree coming from a 1200 GS Adventure 2008 model and getting on to a KTM 1190 Adventure 2014 the BMW was so much more forgiving and comfortable however you just cant get that smile of your face once you ride a KTM its fun from the word go.

  • @L.V-Rider

    Like it was mentioned in the comments before, reviewers always find a way to throw in some comments about the BMW GS. Maybe unrightfully so but one has to wonder if they perhaps get some benefit from BMW for that.
    Then there were a few comments about the "beginner" not having a place in testing these bikes. Without viewing the video again, I don't think he said how much of a beginner. 1 Year? 5 Years? Although I did ride some small (50cc - 125cc) bikes of friends some 20 years before for only short "test rides", my very first own bike was a 1200cc. While not nearly as powerful as these bikes, after only 6 months of riding I was still considered a beginner but some long time experienced riders could not stay with me in the twisties as they were used to mostly straight roads. It varies from person to person.

    English, indeed! You know the joke. If you speak three or more languages, as most Europeans seem to do, you are multilingual; if you speak two, you are bilingual; and If you only speak one .... you are an American.
    I'm an American, but I think have become a KTMer for life, made so by a 990 SMT. That was an absolutely perfect motorcycle that would have been a blast to ride in the Alps. Although it only had a (claimed) 115 HP, with an aftermarket exhaust, lithium battery, and other weight reduction mods, it only weighed about 185 kilos (405 pounds) un-fueled. That KTM RC8 engine has such smooth, high torque it is amazingly easy to ride.
    I now have an 1190 Adventure, the baby brother of the 1290 you review. (I would have gotten the Super Adventure but decided to stay married instead - I know, I know - my priorities show a lack of commitment to the sport.) Maybe it's sour grapes because I don't have the 1290, but the 1190, with a claimed 150 HP (in two of the four riding modes, sport and street), goes so fast, so effortlessly, I can't imagine when I'd need or use more. I mean, of course I agree with the general principle that more (usable) power is always better than less, but I've never felt for even an instant that the 1190 was underpowered (which was not true of the 990).
    I'd be very interested in your comments. And thanks for the great video. I'm retired and hope to visit Austria - ya know, visit where, "The Sound of Music," was filmed, and ride some bikes I've never ridden.

    I have a Guzzi California and HD Softail Heritage. its time for a change, and I want a more powerful and technical bike. Having been Guzzi for a long time I first looked at Stelvio but quickly realised there are better bikes out there. I thought I had narrowed it down to the Aprilia Capo Nord and the KTM 1290 SA, preferring the KTM. However nearly all the reviews, including yours, puts the BMW R1200 GS Adventure ahead (even when it wasn't included in the test!). I found your video very factual and is clear to me the decision is between the KTM and BMW. The only big difference between the two is price.KTM €18600+free 3x side and top boxes+ approx €1000 for navigator and anti theftBMW €22450 which includes all the extras except boxes they are an extra €1700So there is a €4000 difference. Is the BMW with an extra €4000...........I haven't decided yet.When I do, and I have sold at least the HD to help pay for the new one I will let you know!!!Anyway, thanks for an interesting and thought provoking video.

    Contrary to what motorcycle manufacturers want us to believe more power is not always the answer as was proved by your RS1200GS opinion. I wander how would the new Suzuki V-Strom 1000 do in this group. Good commentary but I think Nils is sleeping on a couch tonight.

    Is the GS 1200 really so much faster out of the corners?
    I can't believe that their 120PS boxer has more low grunt than the 160ps 1290cc v-twin from KTM.

    • @keesketsers5866
      @keesketsers5866 8 років тому

      The beamer is slow compared to the others, make no mistake. The difference is that if you are used to a telelever it will feel very secure so you dare to push it harder. I hate the telelever personally because it gives zero warning before your tire grip ends. Conventional setups slowly lose traction when you near the limit and the beamer doesn't, so the bmw feels more secure for longer, but when you cross the limit you lose the bike in an instant. I personally prefer a conventional setup. I do like the lc boxer engine, but after many bmw's with problems I promised myself never to buy one again....

  • @bartvv1770

    I was wondering if the KTM 1190 wastn't a better choice to compare ? Ok it ha s"only" 150 PS , but it is lighter, has shorter gearings, and has to move less weight around , so it rides , to my opinion better then the 1290 super adventure ?

    • @MakTheSank
      @MakTheSank 8 років тому

      2015 BMW s1000xr has 150real HP, and Ducati has about 135HP. Soo maybe the 1190 has more power than the ducati lol.

    • @keesketsers5866
      @keesketsers5866 8 років тому +1

      The 1290 is only 12kg heavier...dry weight. That's nothing on a big bike. Sure, if you fill up the 30 litre tank completely, then it's heavy but you can just put 20 litre in it and almost weigh the same as the 1190.

    • @bartvv1770
      @bartvv1770 8 років тому +1

      +kees ketsers When talking about moving objects, 12 kg is a lot. Fill up a 10l bucket with water, and start moving around with quick direction changes... Tell me how easy that goes...
      Indeed fuel capacity even increases that problem, because of its location on top of the bike.
      How idiotic would it be to buy a almost 20k euro bike with 30l feul capacity and then only fill it up half way???

    • @keesketsers5866
      @keesketsers5866 8 років тому +2

      +Bart VV Idiotic? The 30 litre is very nice for long trips, but not needed for short offroad rides, so why lug the extra weight around? At least you have the choice! 12kg is nothing on a big bike. My weight fluctuates more than that a year!
