MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 352 : David Bowie's "Black★" 2014-2016. 08 January 2024.

Bowie's "Black★" turns 8 today, so I talk about the album, the "Sue" single, "Nothing Has Changed", the album, the videos for the album that expanded the album and the imagery, the "Lazarus" musical, and the "No Plan" EP. This tremendous album was Bowie addressing and exploring mortality and history in a way unlike anyone else has done so far. The album spoke to me during a period of enormous change, dense with imagery and allusion, and was an incredible and powerful artistic statement before his death, utterly transformed afterwards. 08 January 2024.

Welldone mark, amazing album ,my brother loved it ,and I did too, ....When bowie died and I purchased the cd from hmv, I clearly felt part of history, and played it religiously, blew me away , .I wonder if bowie new how good it was .Thanks Mark 😊

Great video, as always, Mark. Apart from Lazarus and a couple of other tracks, I must admit I struggled a bit with Black Star- I find it hard to get on with the jazz leanings. Obviously a personal failing on my part and no reflection on the great man. Unrelated, I was wondering if you were a Billy Bragg fan and, if so, what your thoughts on the recent Roaring Forty box set were?

Another great video, Mark. Would be fascinating to hear your view on solo Scott Walker albums. 1-4 maybe. He was a big influence on Brett for Dog man star. What a voice. Keep up the good work 👍

I found that 10" in a Heavy Metal record store in Sydney Called Utopia - Now it's a specialist store of Funko Pops and Heavy Metal. Awful Song Bowie's Worst along with the B-Side along with "Nature Boy" from the Moulin Rouge Soundtrack, which is on the album Twice! to reinforce it's shitness - Becks cover of "Diamond Dogs" is good though. This Song has been recycled without cause, once for a single to promote the "Nothing Has Changed" (The "Oh Shit I'm Dying" collection) But to use it again as filler on Blackstar is unforgivable when there were other songs Better that could be used (Every other song he ever wrote for example) - Fun Fact he died on Sunday and the lyrics of "Girl Loves Me" has "Where the fuck did Monday go?" which was always creepy to me - Also I can't remember him using bad words in songs before.

I think of the 10" as primitive demos, the versions on the LP feel more fleshed out and better realised.
