    Still going through the game for the first time, currently on chapter 4, and I’ve very much enjoyed the game. I’m not usually one for dice but here I don’t mind, just a fun little choose you’re own adventure with a bit of chance.
    The other thing I like about the card setup of this type of “adventure” is that, unlike a book you can add more cards as they release mini expansions. Would also love to see an upgrade pack in the future that asses the little qualms you had (with starting the game and certain wording). The game is so nicely done it just seem like there were a few small mistakes that could be fixed up in a second printing.
    Hope you make a video about your thoughts after you’ve finished the game.

    Ordered everything on the 25th, got it yesterday. Also picked up a few extra cards for the original Spire's End. I really dig Favro's designs.

      I don’t do learn to play videos. There are way better channels out there for that. I’ve never once played a single game 100% correct! I suck at rules. lol. My channel is more about art, vibes, and overviews. :)

    Yeah I didn't know that reference card existed. Will dig it out now!
    Agree with your assessment of the game. There is a bit in chapter three where the mechanics broke quite a bit for me. But I muddled through and am generally finding it to be very enjoyable.

      @@TheDungeonDive I have tried my very best to think of everything. It’s not always perfect. The Status Effect Card was a late addition to the game that I chose to include with the supplemental material (two-player content). In hindsight, it would have been great to have included it with the starting cards you pull. It was too late in development for that. This was the best option I felt I had. In print, we don’t get the luxury of updates, but I have addressed some of these issues on the latest Survival Guide available for download on the site. Thanks for your comments, feedback and candor.

    I like this game a lot and really love parts of it. But I was definitely frustrated by the rule book. Just trying to figure out what the markers are for was really an annoying way to start my first playthrough. I think Greg likes people to feel like they can use the components in his games as they see fit but I think it would be better to give a clear default setup for those of us that just wanted to get into the game with minimal ambiguities.

    • @BrentARJ
      @BrentARJ Рік тому +2

      One more thing. I wasn't sure from your video whether or not you know that you can lock more than one die at a time. You can lock as many dice as you want and reroll the others as long as you lock at least one. I was confused about this at first so just thought I'd pass that on in case anybody else is too.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +1

    I agree.
    Starting over is the biggest flaw of those kind of games for me.
    Currently because you have to go over the same actions and narrative at least to the point that a different decision will make a difference. But until then you can be dead again.....and start over again....

    I received my copy last week. It’s still in shrink.
    I hope the combat is better than in the original. For me, combat was the worse part of that game. And the worst part was that damage didn’t even carry over, you automatically healed after every fight.
    With very few exceptions, combat was completely separate from the rest of the game, and it got to the point where I just chose the outcome of the fights instead of playing them out.
    The neoprene mat is actually pretty good. High quality with nice thickness, clearly printed, and stitched edges. And not too much empty/extra space. If you like playmats, this is a good one.

  • @DustinPorta
    @DustinPorta Рік тому +1

    Alright, I'm sold. I'd expected the rules issues and questionable thematic choices. The original had similar issues and I loved it anyway. It was the combat I was still on the fence about, and if you say it's fun, then I'm in.

    • @BrentARJ
      @BrentARJ Рік тому +2

      I agree with Dan. The combat mechanic of bullseyes is really cool and an improvement on Spire's End. Sometimes you just want to fly through a combat encounter and get back to the narrative, and i think that's especially true when you're going to be replaying parts of a gamebook again and again. These combats are really fast, but because there are multiple ways to form bullseyes and some encounters limit which bullseyes count as hits, it does keep you on your toes. And the wild die, marksmanship, and items you pick up give you enough tools to mitigate the randomness. Then there's the fact that you use a similar system for skill challenges. The elegance of bullseye mechanic is probably the part of the game I love most.

  • @p0ck3tp3ar
    @p0ck3tp3ar Рік тому +5

    This had me excited until I saw the dice. I really dislike that bullseye concept. It really feels like an unncessary element, partially for immersion but largely just to do something new for the sake of doing something new.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +4

      For me the dice system added a lot to this game. But that’s totally a thing you’ll either like or not.

    • @BrentARJ
      @BrentARJ Рік тому +5

      Couldn't disagree more. I love how fast and intuitive every roll is. I don't need to interpret the results or refer to a chart, or do math. You're trying to hit a bullseye with your slingshot, so rolling bullseyes with your dice is about as thematic as it can get.

    Excellent review. I was about to purchase this to play with my wife who likes whimsical fantasy but is kinda squeamish. The art led me to believe this would be okay for her but now I’m not so sure and will need to investigate the theme more thoroughly.
    Was your violence concern gore related?

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +1

      No - not gore. Just more violent. As an example. I had the opportunity to toss a Flame Nut or something at a man on the street. I figured the nut would hit him and knock him out or something. Turns out, it hit him and exploded, and he ran around on fire, screaming. The art and general look of the game didn't lead me to think that something like that would happen.

    The game looks interesting but I think it would frustrate me to no end by the story being determined by dice rolls. I like the old CYOA books because all the choices are mine. This game feels like it takes away player agency by depending on dice rolls. It's nice to see you can mitigate that to an extent but I think that I'd end up doing the same as you and bookmarking decision points so I can go the other way when I reach a dead end. Or I'd just make a decision without rolling the dice. I have limited time to play and I'm not interested in repeating the same parts of the game over and over because the dice rolls suck.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +2

      Yep! That's what I do. Fail forward. The old CYOA and Fighting Fantasy books had all kinds of surprise dead ends that were completely out of your control. "You're at a crossroads. Left or Right?" RIGH! "You fall in a hole and die!" I'd rather have a fighting chance with a press your luck dice rolling mechanism than that! Many times in old game books you died if you lost combat, and combat in those was just roll higher on a D6 than the monster. So while this has its issues, I don't think this one aspect is the biggest issue.
