The time between 1020 - 1930 must be amazing. There was a big scene of artists, of gays, lesbians and transgender.
My jewish grandma lived in Berlin at this time and she always told me from the beautiful time, when she was sitting outside in the coffee-bar, looking at all the wonderful gay couples and drag queens...

Ja, so sind sie "die Angelsachsen", die wissen bescheid, wer was und wie ist, nach dem sie sich erst auf ihrer Insel und dann dreihundert Jahre lang in der ganzen Welt entsprechend ausgetobt haben. Nein, wir Deutschen sind so vielfältig wie zum Beispiel die Engländer oder jede andere Nation. Es gibt keinen Nationalcharakter, was soll dies sein, es gibt vielleicht nur so etwas wie Erfahrungen und Traumata, die ein Land eine Nation erlebt.

I remember as a teenager bringing home an LP of Greta Keller songs from the 30's. I fell in love. My mother remembered her from her years in the U.S.
