    There are two versions of Choplifter missing from this video. The first is the Atari 8bit computer release and the second being the Fujitsu 7 (FM7) computer. The reason being because I couldn't get either to work.
    Time Code
    00:25 - Arcade
    01:45 - Apple ][
    03:05 - Atari 5200 (although I kept calling it Atari 5800 in the video. DOH!)
    04:12 - Atari 7800
    06:04 - Commodore 64
    07:18 - Coleco Vision
    08:43 - Famicom / NES
    09:53 - Master System
    11:35 - MSX

    The paralax on the Master System is pretty damned impressive.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 років тому +2

      The Master System was quite a powerful system. There are many great examples on it that would put even the most visually impressive NES game to shame.

    • @SomeOrangeCat
      @SomeOrangeCat 6 років тому

      Just a shame about the audio chip the thing shipped with. I know there's an FM addon for it, but its just for the Mark 3, and not all games for the system support it.

    The Master System version is simply AWESOME. The smooth parallax scrolling and more colorful graphics are so pleasing to see. My beloved Master System easily wins.

      I believe it was the Master System game which introduced many people to parallax scrolling. It was really good.

    It's been soooooo long since I played this on C64. I think it's basic look is typical of C64 games of that period, some early C64 games looked pretty simple, almost like a 2600 game. From what I remember, the C64 version still played well enough regardless

    Why does the chopper unload on the hostages in the title screen!?? "I rescued you now i'm going to kill you!" lol. The Super Nintendo version kicked arse!!!

      hehehe, good point. bad demo programming I guess.
      I also like the SNES version but since it's a follow up (Choplifter III) I couldn't feature it on this video.

    Good basic games from the dawn of industry.
    It reminds me of Konami's Jackal in its concept.
    Also, on it looks like helicopter is shooting at the crowd of people in front of it on Arcade and SMS title screens.

    If I'm not mistaken there's a choplifter game for the MS-DOS (but unsure if it's related or not)
    Great video btw! :-)

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  9 років тому

      I think there is but I don't think it's the same game. There's also a Gameboy and SNES choplifter game but they are also different.

    • @MrDmoney156
      @MrDmoney156 9 років тому

      Retro Core Ah, okay so this is the choplifter games related to the Sega arcades only right?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  9 років тому

      Sort of. The Sega game is based upon the original which was made for the Apple ][ by Dan Gorlin. So in a way the arcade is a port of the Apple ][ game :) All the versions featured on this video are based around the same version of the game.

    • @MrDmoney156
      @MrDmoney156 9 років тому

      Retro Core ooh okay lol, that's pretty cool! But recently I've played the DOS version recently and yeah it's the same gameplay as the Arcade version sort of.. while the SNES/Super Famicom version is very different.

    The Apple II is the original home of Choplifter. It's quite charming if you like that composite-blended color style. The Sega arcade arrived a few years later, and it's really nice. The Atari 5200 version shouldn't be flickering like that, something must have been off with the emulator. It uses one button to turn and the second to fire. It also uses analog steering which is unique to that version. I'm a little surprised to see the 8-bit Atari version isn't the same as the 5200, but it's own fully unique version. That's the one I played back in the 80s, and I agree that the firing/turning with the joystick button is a bit clunky.

    easily the game I spent the most time with on the master system. I didn't get a MS till later in life but my buddy had one back when it came out. It seams this was the only game we played on his MS when I went to his house. he no longer has his old systems but when he comes here we still play it to this day. great game, an absolute classic.

      I also had this on the Master System when I was a kid. Loved it back then. I also think it was one of the cheaper titles at 12.99 in the UK while most games were 24.99.

      Retro Core It's the Master System version I had too, cracking game and does anyone else's remember the Jaws related easter egg on level 2? Get as low to the sea as possible and keep shooting the aircraft carrier, then a shark pop's up in a nod to the movie poster.

    Me and an old mate played the shit out of this on the c64. I remember us both being impressed with the sound of the chopper speeding up and slowing down. Laughable now by comparison to the current tech of games :)
    I think it caught our imagination, just enough though. That seems to be the huge change in gaming from when I was a kid, you certainly don't need to imagine much in games nowadays, it's all there. Nice work.

  • @IMDRanged
    @IMDRanged 8 років тому +1

    I had the Atari 800/XL version and it performed better than the Commodore 64. Yes it uses a 2600 type controller (one button), so you had to press hold the button and press left or right to turn the copter.

    Old video, I know, but if you keep repeatedly lifting the helicopter off the ground ever so slightly (like 1 or 2 pixels), the enemy tanks won't come in.

      True. Or at least on the Master System version. I used to do that a lot back as a kid.

    I grew up with the Atari XEGS version, long before I eventually got a Master System and it's version. The XEGS game wasn't as diverse visually as the arcade game, but it was still the same premise and it was still fun to try and get all 64 people rescued. Hell, I still break it out once in a while and give it a few tries.
    On that note, there are a couple other versions missing from this video, with both being on the Atari 8-bit computers. One is the old floppy disk version found here...
    ua-cam.com/video/-4ciAg6Xv4M/v-deo.html
    ... and the other is the aforementioned Atari XEGS version, found here...

    The 5200 version would probably look better with the color artifacts functioning properly, if it's anything like the early a8 version I grew up with. That 5200 emulation does not look stellar. There's also a later a8 version (redone for xegs release) which does away with the artifacts and looks a lot better than the earlier one, IMO. Wish I had known about that one as a kid.

    • @RetroCore

      Indeed. The original was made for the Apple][. Pretty odd having a home computer game ported to the arcade then back again to other formats :)

      Too bad you couldn't get the A8 version to work. It was easily the best port among those translated from the Apple II original and not the arcade.

      @@RetroCore Good idea, Mark.

  • @bombjack1984

    Good comparison, you get the lengths for each version just right as a couple of minutes each is fine, unlike other comparison series on UA-cam which drag on.
    I guess the Atari 8-bit versions are the same as the 5200 seeing as they're very similar systems, so probably not anything missed there. Likewise the SG-1000 version is pretty much the same as the MSX version, seeing as they're also very similar hardware.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  9 років тому +1

      I think you are right. I checked out the SG-1000 version after being reminded of it and it does indeed look like the MSX version.
      Abough the clip lengh in this video. I originally had them longer but snce this game has no BGM on most versions it started to drag on quite a bit. So I cut down the video clips. I'm glad you like the shorter version.

    • @IMDRanged

      +bombjack I had one for my Atari 800XL computer and it looked better than the 5200 (5800) version. It looked like the Commodore 64 version, a faster I noticed but it might be due to Retro Core's C64 emulation used that may or may not be 100% accurate emulation speed. Would be cool if he did have the Atari 8 bit computer version for compare with this video.

    Good vid but I would have said poor choice of colours rather than clash. I didn't see any object change colour when it moved over it (attribute clash) or clash of contrasting colours dark green over yellow or similar. Just a poor choice of white sprites and white main object really. :-)
