My sister and I had to double date till we were practically seniors in high school, and though I griped about it then, I am SO thankful! Haha I always liked having an “out” if I needed one, and it kept things from getting too serious and we were all more focused on whether we liked each other’s personalities instead of physical stuff

Boundaries, respect and consequences. I raised a lot of teenagers. For me, no make-up outside the home before 14 and then with my approval. No alone dating until 17-18 alone without parental permission and discussions with the couple concerned. Plus, I believe in open communication, on the teenager level but with respect! It is what they know when communicating with their friends, open communication. I only had problems with one child and that was expected behavior from that particular child! The rest were very respectful and never questioned the “house rules!”

I love that you don’t let your kids have social media. I was in high school right of the start of social media when MySpace started to get big. I am thankful that I did not have to deal with the bullying that happen and the fake realities that people put out there. I deactivated my Facebook at 30 years old because of the mental effects it had on me. I can only imagine how it could make someone a lot less younger insecure and depressed. It makes me sad.

I love the talk about not having your children date too early, saving them from early heartbreak, preserving their innocence and all of that. As parents it is a hard thing to do when your children are seeing other children dating early, but it is our duty to protect them from all those negatives that are in the world and that "might" ruin their lives,( or negatively impact their lives)at a very age. Speaking from experience, it is no fun having adult responsibilities as a child and having a lot of unnecessary regrets, and negative childhood memories .
I wish that starting out in my country, that their were more than 2 of us biracial children in my community, and more than just me in my neighborhood. As I was growing up in Canada and America,I got that diversity around me and not just at school. I used to feel a little different because it was brought up at home(only),but my friends didn't care to ask (my white friends and black friends never mixed, I played with them in different neighborhoods). Colorism and race was a taboo,we saw it,but was told to hush. I talk about these things with my children,(about myself), why I believe we should embrace everyone with the love of God,therefore seeing them as beautiful people in God's image. My oldest children and I still talk about these things as their children asks about why I look different.
Sarah and Pastor Solo,I admire seeing your family come together as a unit and create lasting joyous memories. For as long as I can remember, my white and black family members have not come together, and those biracial only meet at special occasions(weddings and funerals, mostly the latter). It's sad. The older generation hide truths and information from the rest of us,literally taking it to their graves. Smh
Very intriguing vlog. I'm going to question my mom before the memories all fade away.😆

The number one thing kids took away that no one had told them? That saying something mean to someone online hurts just as much as if you said it to their face. Mean is mean no matter where it happens and I think society in general could learn from this.

I just want to say that you are not obligated to share everything in your lives. I have stopped watching channels because it seems like they are trusting the camera on people. I am grateful for the parts of your life that you do share. I know you all aren't perfect, but you do have a great perspective on things. I love your meal prep videos. I love your grocery halls, especially when the little ones are grabbing berries or crackers or whatever. That is real life. I think this channel is great for you for the extra income (with 10 kids any extra is good.) Personally I learn a lot from you. Solo is amazing as well. Handsome and a great personality. You guys are living the dream. Thanks so much for sharing. Hugs

"Run like David!" That's what my husband and I tell our son all the time as far as internet and any form of temptations go. Also, "do what you think is right" has been a fun one to use. It puts the accountability fully on them. Its worked so far and has created some really comical and deep teaching moments. ❤️

I agree about wanting kids to be kids, I didnt get the luxury in many things, but I did get to choose no relationships till after I was done w/ school. I couldn't stand all the fakeness in a "Christian school" over "who likes who," "they touched me do they like me"

You guys are so right about limiting the internet with your children. Within my extended family one of the girls who had just barely turned 12, after following some creep on the internet, committed suicide. I don't have all the details, but oh the grief of a young girl that snuffed her life out without any of those things that girls look forward to. The thing is you can't control what your kids see online if you let kids have their own internet in their bedroom or wherever. My pastor talked about this once from the pulpit that no way can his family be online except in the living room where others are to monitor them. The thing is you can trust your own kids, but you can't trust who they find online. Your response about dating is so good. I did have a wonderful boyfriend when I was 15, and in a way it was a gift of God, as this guy was terrific. So when I married my first husband who treated me like trash, I could remember back to when a guy really did care for me and treated me like a queen. If I had a 15 year-old daughter would I have let her date at 15? Most likely not. When I hear of girls that think they need to lose their virginity before they even get to HS, it totally stuns me. The devil will use any lie to get our children away from us and from following God.

Loved the answer about dating and heartache. I haven’t explained it in that way to my kiddos. Definitely going to bring that reason up to them. I also loved how you said children are intelligent. I was raised to think the opposite, that we were bound to mess everything up. That teens are the most irresponsible people on earth due to hormones etc. I loved that you said and teach your kids otherwise.

I loved your advice to start at the goal, and try to figure out how to get there! I have been married for 23 years and never thought about it that way. I guess, in the end we battled through somehow to make our marriage work, and now we truly are inseparable. However we are inseparable in different ways. We can be apart for weeks on end of we have to be in different parts of the country, but in the end, our "home" is each other. I just wish I had heard your advice years ago for some of those earlier disagreements. 😉

I can’t believe someone asked that question about the kids having black friends. What does it matter what color their friends are? That’s the beauty of living here in the US is that we have people from all over. I’m black and I have friends and relatives of all shades....love it

    • @kobla56

While they are young and live in the protected environment of their parents home Black friends may be less integral. Being Black is more than just "color" it is also a unique and proud culture. As those children grow older and leave home they will find that the world will deal with them differently. They will find that having Black friends who share some of the same experiences will be invaluable. The girls will want to discuss with other Black girls how to care for their hair and skin. There are aspects of African American culture that is probably rare in Nebraska that Black friends can introduce them to. I think it was a legitimate question.

I agree with you on the internet and the dating. My son has already had a heartache when his dad passed away. He was only 8 yrs old and his brother was 17 yr old. I have to be strong for them. My oldest doesn't talk about his dad. My youngest and I went to Newsong ( which is a service through Hospice of the Valley) for 3 1/2 yrs. But now we are seeing a counselor together and separately. God bless you and your family ❤.

What a lovely couple and family. My children are grown and it is so nice to get to be a fly on the wall in your home with your family. I love how purposeful you are in raising your children to protect their hearts and I have total agreement on everything you went over here. Making decisions for your family with their long term happiness in mind is not always easy and certainly, you will not find agreement in mainstream culture on this but it is so worth it. My son called me the other day to thank me for not letting them play video games and for putting a timer on their computer use. I wanted them to have a "real" life with "real" activities. People ask me how I did that. I just did it. Now that they are well rounded adults and happy because they make good decisions, I have such a sense of satisfaction knowing we did it right and they will thrive into the future.
