When one musician interviews another musician--Joe Lovano is here, thanks to YourFreeSelf, interviewing Wayne Shorter---then it cannot help but become what happens when two musicians are talking---which is to say, musicians know music and know themselves better than anyone else (and they are far more eloquent about music than I am). Great music touches us in our hearts, beyond all words, and that's what I get from hearing Wayne Shorter talking with Joe Lovano.
Regarding Joe's contribution to this, here's a quote from another interview with Wayne: "There are no interruptions--only opportunities." Wayne takes this as a genuine dialogue between musicians who are tired of talking about nuts and bolts. This is an inter-narration about music in the larger contexts of life, philosophy, history, culture, and spirituality. Some of what is said here is tentative, which is entirely typical of real, spontaneous conversations. This conversation is in the spirit of what Wayne (I think) would say is at the heart of Jazz: don't settle for the conventional--reach for something unique to the moment and reflective of everyone involved.

Why y’all gotta hate on Joe here? This is less of an interview and more of a casual conversation which is refreshing. Wayne seems interested. Just enjoy it for what it is.
Exactly, from the small amount I've heard from Wayne's interviews, this works much better to simply allow him to just express himself and allow his train of thought to run freely without too many structured questions.

Joe Lovano is just fine here. Wayne is interested in his ideas and comments. Why are you giving him a hard time? The atmosphere of the interview looks weird because of the lighting, and that it's shot in a business hotel. But I kind of like the low production values: it's old school - two intelligent and interesting guys talking to each other. I'd be happy to watch more stuff like this. The producers could easily do better with the lighting and furnishings though. This room is so drab!!!
In the days of UA-cam and all this access to information, where the hell are those tapes of Charlie Parker giving a music lesson, or playing when he was 16? Would be amazing to hear. Fantastic interview of course, what a mind, what a soul.

These two guys are amazing--great video--but please review the closed captioning (CC). It is quite terrible. Is the CC system automated or is someone punking us? Examples: "Have you heard the record we did with Art Blakey and Bud Powell" is captured as "the record we did with our peak in but how I did sure" at 7:45. "Walter Davis was playing" is written as "but while the day before playing" at 7:50. "I saw Bud" is written as "I thought but" at 7:54. "Walter Davis" insisted is written as "But there what the day with" at 7:58. Lee Morgan becomes "Leslie Morgan" at 8:19. "Bud Powell" becomes "But Power" 8:46. "Living in the hotel was Sonny Criss" becomes "Living in a hotel with antichrist oh yeah at 9:07. "And he got up" becomes "nigga up that led" at 9:40.

For the music that you love of Wayne came from Wayne's expression which still develops today. Wayne has a rare genius and insight. The way he thinks about things is incredible, and so rare. His speaking is somewhat choppy, which owes more to age, likely, but his thoughts are sharp and insightful. This interview, or any discussion with a legend like wayne, is a gift to humanity.
