The Doomseeker special rule is very on point, background wise, for slayer. And I feel a version of that should have been incorporated into the regular slayers.
You mean the point scoring? That would give Dwarfs way too much of an advantage. The opponent would never get any points. People would just take slayer heavy lists and crash them into high initiative units and let them destroy them because they aren’t worth points dead.

I think a banner Rune + 1-2pt drop in slayer cost and max unit size of 30 would make them playable enough to be something I'd choose over other special options (I've got about 70-80 lead slayers (30 painted) and I've never taken more than 10 in a game of old world.
Miner Cart is subtly amazing. Park it near a cluster of war machines and now you have stand-and-shoot reactions against ambushers and light flanking forces. Crash it into enemies as a last resort.

Welp. I decided to build a Wind Rose themed dwarf army after seeing them love a couple months ago, now Rob is playing Wind Rose as an introduction to the Royal Clan. Guess that answers what composition list I'm gonna use.

There were further reductions (apparently including under Labour in the late 70s) after that. I also remember it going for younger children in the 80s from childhood, but I suspect the 80s ones were probably decisions made at a Local Authority level (I would guess due to underfunding + no statutory requirement) though. Lots of things that disappeared in the 80s did so at different times in different places as councils opposed to some changes tried to oppose them and usually eventually had to give up. Some things don't seem to change!
Just to be clear, I didn't experience it first hand as I wasn't born till 1989, but my parents complained a bunch about Thatcher as I grew up in Wales.
Im very excited for this arcane journal. The storm of chaos slayer army is what got ne into dwarfs so running something close to this with doomseekers and goblin hewer has me super hyped. Slayer tatoos as well are perfect.
Thane with hand gun with Bursting Flame, accuracy and multi shot - no modifiers and potential for 4D3 hits looks to be a stand out combo and comes in just over a war machine cost.
Really enticed by the Expeditionary Force army list. Got about two battle for skull pass boxes worth of Dwarfs lying around, I think they'll make a solid foundation.
Some neat stuff, some fun stuff. I think Longbeards in the Royal Clan list are possibly sleeper hits. Stack some static combat res on them, choose hw+shield. They eat a charge, win combat anyway, and are following up on S5 with -1 AP. If you need punch to put the fear of Grimnir in your enemy's big monsters, they're charging or following up at S7 (!) with great weapons. Also in Royal Clans, the Warriors are core options that can stubborn+shieldwall! Give small missiles of 10 drilled and start them near a Bugman's Cart and they can get where they need to in marching column pretty effectively to intercept and hold up some nasty stuff. Something the list does do for handling dragons and monsters is provide more tools to saturate your line with anti-monster options. The enemy can avoid your slow monster killers, but that's harder when you've got a few Doomseekers or Slayer heroes and your Thane is toting a handgun with Slaying to boot. One disappointment is no new tools for magic defense. Runesmiths/lords just don't cut it and an Anvil is good but expensive/immobile/level 3.
IT'S A DOUBLE DOIVE It may be a meme but I love the idea of a slayer points denial army. The two armies feel really cool, and as a whole the book seems flavorful. Wish there was more anti magic, but I'm really looking forward to the shenanigans people come up with!
Rob talking about he concept of generals changing army building brings me back to 3rd/4th/5th ed 40k. With leaders on bikes unlocking bikes as troops, or iron worriers/blood angels changing force org charts, etc. Theirs something about the way that all worked that I feel has been lost in modern GW games, despite the fact army building is more flexible then ever.
If GW had any common sense... any rudimentary grasp of marketing... Instead of setting up an internal competition between AoS and TOW they could create a synergy between the two systems encouraging people to play both games.
The ability to bring 4! Rapid Fire Bursting Flame handguns in one army is AWESOME. 3 on Thanes(1 w Accuracy, 1 w Flaming, 1 w Magic attacks) and the last plain on an Engineer Sapper Marksman. That's potentially 16d3 shots to absolutely MELT anything in your opponent's army!
Wondering if taking the mine cart and placing it behind a wide unit of infantry, thinking like 7-8 models, might be worth it so they can do a Stand and Shoot with the Blasting Charges.
Hey Guys, awesome Video! I got one question of what you said at 18:55. So you move 12 with Marching Column, then you use your Anvil with the extra Movement and Reform and go another 8? How can you Reform and March 8? Is cause of Drilled? Can you use it like 2 Times in the Movement Phase?` So like, Drilled Reform into Marching 12 into Anvil Rune into Drilled Reform into Marching 8? Sorry I´m new in this Game and dont know stuff like that.
On Val's point about denying VPs, nothing stops you from bringing 1,500 points to a 2,000 points game. The problem you'll face is now your short handed to actually pull the win. So sending 500 points of Doomseekers to their death to deny VP is that you might be in trouble as your army will be lacking in some aspects.
The Doomseekers are my kind of play style. Going back to 7th, I've always played a points denial army. You could potentially rock a Doomseeker in a Royal Clan with 2d3+4 attacks+Rune of Endless Battle. That then drops down to Doomseekers with 2d3+3 attacks. 600 or so points worth of Doomseekers that put out rock solid damage that are worth 0 points when they die sounds glorious if you ask me. A Thane with Bursting Flame/Accuracy/Rapid Fire in a unit of Drakes will have always be able to stand-and-shoot at 3+ to hit. Add a unit champ with a Troll Hammer and Cinder Blast bombs (makes unit 171). You get a versatile shooting champ with BS5. This unit will likely get it's points back every game and will shred most anything anywhere near it.
Way back when Dwarf Lords could just take a Oathstone (similar to Grudgestone). It was one of my favorite items because back then it didn't make you unbreakable but it did remove your flanks and rear. So charges on any side were always the 'front' and always had rank bonuses. It was the perfect way to take a position and just stay there, forever.

The Arcane Journal seems to be quite a lot of fun and I agree with your closing thoughts. It was unrealistic to expect it to 'rebalance' things for Dwarfs - changes to the rules to improve the lot of infantry and war machines and perhaps more restrictions on choices for some other armies are probably needed for that (hopefully motivated by a desire to encourage armies that actually look like armies rather than any particular concern about Dwarfs) and may or may not happen down the line, but that does not appear to be the role of the Arcane Journals which all appear to be good for what they are so far.
Gun King. Handgun with runes of Slaying, Bursting Flame, Accuracy and a massive wing helm with the Rune of Luck. 3+ to hit with a single use reroll, turns into 2d3 hits 3+ to wound a dragon -1AP 1d3 Wounds. Fuck your Dragon!

Hear me out, Daemon Slayer with a Great Weapon. Master Rune of Swiftness, Rune of Fury, Rune of Speed, Rune of Endless Battle, Rune of Wrath. 6 attacks, weapon skill 7, strength 6, AP-2 with Armour Bane. Fighting on initive 6, and all unsaved wounds allow an additional attack. That to me seems worthy of my AoS Gotrek model.
normally, heroes got "you can spend 100 points in weapon, armor, talisman runes" Royal clan special rule says: "add 25 points of runes" what about DAEMONSLAYER? he got 100 weapon runes AND 25 talisman runes... what happens? 125 weapon runes AND 50 talisman runes? 2 runes of warding are not bad at all

For the Sapper's hostile terrain, if you have a Sapper sitting behind a dwarf unit that is charged, is that charging enemy unit taking the dangerous terrain test?
@tidomann That is one hell of a spicy rule. Depending on unit size and how poor your opponents luck is that could be rank bonuses being lost, especially once you start factoring in stand and shoot reactions.
Between 2x2 Scout Gyrocopters in Core, 3 Gyrobombers in Rare and 16 Gyrocopters in Special (more would break the 50% point limit), you can field a whopping 23 flying Dwarfs in a 2000 points Expeditionary Force! Probably not good, but definitely unexpected for anybody unlucky enough to face a player lunatic enough to actually field this!
Point of order: Diggy Diggy Hole is a song about dwarf miners, which cannot be taken in a Royal Clan list. Also, I notice that there is no specification that you are limited to 0-1 Hammerer units per King/Thane. Does that mean MSU Hammerers can be a thing?
Kind of ironic that Miners (if they have blasting charges themselves tbf) won't benefit at all from the Miner's Cart and can't even take it with them on an ambush. I was kinda hoping the Miner's Cart would benefit, well, Miners!
Burlock seems an auto include in the D.E.F. for the leadership 10. The Engineer Sapper's dangerous terrain doesn't work if he gets charged right? so you would need to stand him behind your unit.
I'm overall happy with this new incarnation of Dwarfs, compared to the old editions rules. The only flaw (and a big one..) that I see concerns the pretty disappointing war machines and the pretty useless (as always) trollslayers. There is a reason why Dwarfs (should) have powerful war machines and shooting: we can't dictate the pace of the battle, we have to force the hand of the opponent to approach our troops and we need something to match the big and flying monsters that we simply can't fight in melee (because they can easily dodge our infantries). I'm happy with how the new armylist gives us new options for more aggressive lists, but they are not enough in my opinion to balance the inner flaws of Dwarfs.

Something I saw pointed out on another video is that Ungrim+Royal Clan's core slayers are not RAW included in the core requirement unless they release an FAQ or something.
Just a thought at the end about the hewer vs the organ gun, doesn’t the hewer act as a replacement of sorts in the royal army given the gunpowder restriction? Sorry if that was touched on and I didn’t hear that part
1:20:00 Disoreded charges removing I is great vs great weapons. A bit niche, but not getting murked by chargeing great weapon weilders can be great when it comes up.
Burlok not being able to take a handgun seems like a miss. My badass Engineer character can’t use Engineering weapon runes. Flavor fail, and personally seems like a gameplay fail.
I was hoping for something to help with magic tbh. Lack of MR of Valaya is painful. MR of Calm is nice but needs to go off first which is hard against a level 4 and while it does help make casting harder, the ones that go off probably won’t be able to dispel.
I think Dwarf cart and Doomseekers are winner. They are needed, and they are good and whatever build u want to do, all can in someway take these units.
12:35 75pts for a Master Rune of Smiting on great weapon, 45 pts for a Master Rune of Gromril, 25 pts for a rune of preservation. Not terrible but you are only going to fight whatever your opponent allows you to fight anyway, so, cool as it is, you have better investing that huge amount of points on something else

Royal Clan on its own doesn't tickle me but it's a good foundation for the Slayer Hold army. Thorgrim has cool special rules but they did the once mightly Armour of Skaldour dirty. And Thorgrim denies the MR of Smiting to a King or Daemon Slayer. IDK Ungrim is obviously cool, even if he inexplicably is not a Daemon Slayer. Meh, its fine. Expeditionary force looks like fun! I don't really get why Slayers are a part of it though. Burlok is cool, and finally after all those years engineering weapon runes, those were long overdue. Goblin Hewer should have Slayer rule for the crew and def should not be able to get Engineering runes imho. Weird.
I've thought for a long time now that dwarfs should get a rule that let's them always charge the max distance they could roll, so they just have a guaranteed threat range (albeit a short one). This would mean that if you get close they could actually charge you or if you fail to roll high enough you'll get counter charged. It'd make approaching a dwarf gunline scary as hell
It would be cool if they did something like they did with Leagues of Votann when they were released in 9th edition 40k. They had a rule where their movement couldn't be modified, so no worrying about difficult terrain or abilities to slow charges. It would fit in the flavor of the army being slow, but determined. Alternatively, just make Move Through Cover ignore the part of difficult terrain that requires you to pick the lowest of 2d6 when charging.
I genuinely am planning to buy a nice leatherbound notebook for recording my grievances against my opponent's army, like say they have a unit of black orcs that chop off a few too many beards during the game. Then I can try and settle them next time I fight that player (or even face a different guy playing the same faction) just for fun. This rule the royal lads get means I HAVE to do it now.
Those dwarf mineshafts seem really cool but are they too easy to spawn block? Just park something on top and your opponent can't bring the miners in? Of course that's also something tying up your resources if you do that..

Maybe if they only gave half the usual points when destroyed.

The Gyrocopter used to have 3 wounds. The Scout Gyrocopter does not lose 1. But it gains +1 BS.

How can you have 4 Fire Bursting runes? The rule of jealousy, prevents master rune dupes.

The rules seem good, and as a non dwarf player it make me excited for other armies when they get to them.

It was unrealistic to expect it to 'rebalance' things for Dwarfs - changes to the rules to improve the lot of infantry and war machines and perhaps more restrictions on choices for some other armies are probably needed for that (hopefully motivated by a desire to encourage armies that actually look like armies rather than any particular concern about Dwarfs) and may or may not happen down the line, but that does not appear to be the role of the Arcane Journals which all appear to be good for what they are so far.

Hear me out, Daemon Slayer with a Great Weapon. Master Rune of Swiftness, Rune of Fury, Rune of Speed, Rune of Endless Battle, Rune of Wrath.
6 attacks, weapon skill 7, strength 6, AP-2 with Armour Bane. Fighting on initive 6, and all unsaved wounds allow an additional attack.
That to me seems worthy of my AoS Gotrek model.

The Rune of concussion only gives the Stupidity rule, the unit still has to fail the Leadership test at the beginning of the turn.
For the Sapper's hostile terrain, if you have a Sapper sitting behind a dwarf unit that is charged, is that charging enemy unit taking the dangerous terrain test?

Between 2x2 Scout Gyrocopters in Core, 3 Gyrobombers in Rare and 16 Gyrocopters in Special (more would break the 50% point limit), you can field a whopping 23 flying Dwarfs in a 2000 points Expeditionary Force! Probably not good, but definitely unexpected for anybody unlucky enough to face a player lunatic enough to actually field this!

Also, I notice that there is no specification that you are limited to 0-1 Hammerer units per King/Thane. Does that mean MSU Hammerers can be a thing?
Kind of ironic that Miners (if they have blasting charges themselves tbf) won't benefit at all from the Miner's Cart and can't even take it with them on an ambush. I was kinda hoping the Miner's Cart would benefit, well, Miners!

Burlock seems an auto include in the D.E.F. for the leadership 10. The Engineer Sapper's dangerous terrain doesn't work if he gets charged right? so you would need to stand him behind your unit.

I'm overall happy with this new incarnation of Dwarfs, compared to the old editions rules.
The only flaw (and a big one..) that I see concerns the pretty disappointing war machines and the pretty useless (as always) trollslayers.
There is a reason why Dwarfs (should) have powerful war machines and shooting: we can't dictate the pace of the battle, we have to force the hand of the opponent to approach our troops and we need something to match the big and flying monsters that we simply can't fight in melee (because they can easily dodge our infantries).
I'm happy with how the new armylist gives us new options for more aggressive lists, but they are not enough in my opinion to balance the inner flaws of Dwarfs.

Something I saw pointed out on another video is that Ungrim+Royal Clan's core slayers are not RAW included in the core requirement unless they release an FAQ or something.
I really like the Ungrim sub army list and plan to build around it.

Burlok not being able to take a handgun seems like a miss. My badass Engineer character can’t use Engineering weapon runes. Flavor fail, and personally seems like a gameplay fail.
I was hoping for something to help with magic tbh. Lack of MR of Valaya is painful. MR of Calm is nice but needs to go off first which is hard against a level 4 and while it does help make casting harder, the ones that go off probably won’t be able to dispel.

I think Dwarf cart and Doomseekers are winner. They are needed, and they are good and whatever build u want to do, all can in someway take these units.

Sure you can. Up to four as a rare choice in the Dwarfen Mountain Holds Grand Army. It says so at the bottom of the unit entry in the Arcane Journal.

Not terrible but you are only going to fight whatever your opponent allows you to fight anyway, so, cool as it is, you have better investing that huge amount of points on something else

question on the cart: marching doubles the move characteristic, cart adds 1, which one is applied first?
I would imagine that as the +1 happens earlier in the turn at the point it gets doubled for marching it's already 4.

He's a king so I do believe he can join any. He just has special perks with hammerers and can join slayers even tho he doesn't have loner

Royal Clan on its own doesn't tickle me but it's a good foundation for the Slayer Hold army.
Thorgrim has cool special rules but they did the once mightly Armour of Skaldour dirty. And Thorgrim denies the MR of Smiting to a King or Daemon Slayer. IDK
Ungrim is obviously cool, even if he inexplicably is not a Daemon Slayer. Meh, its fine.
Expeditionary force looks like fun! I don't really get why Slayers are a part of it though.
Burlok is cool, and finally after all those years engineering weapon runes, those were long overdue.
Goblin Hewer should have Slayer rule for the crew and def should not be able to get Engineering runes imho. Weird.

I've thought for a long time now that dwarfs should get a rule that let's them always charge the max distance they could roll, so they just have a guaranteed threat range (albeit a short one). This would mean that if you get close they could actually charge you or if you fail to roll high enough you'll get counter charged. It'd make approaching a dwarf gunline scary as hell

It would be cool if they did something like they did with Leagues of Votann when they were released in 9th edition 40k. They had a rule where their movement couldn't be modified, so no worrying about difficult terrain or abilities to slow charges. It would fit in the flavor of the army being slow, but determined.
Alternatively, just make Move Through Cover ignore the part of difficult terrain that requires you to pick the lowest of 2d6 when charging.

I genuinely am planning to buy a nice leatherbound notebook for recording my grievances against my opponent's army, like say they have a unit of black orcs that chop off a few too many beards during the game. Then I can try and settle them next time I fight that player (or even face a different guy playing the same faction) just for fun. This rule the royal lads get means I HAVE to do it now.
Those dwarf mineshafts seem really cool but are they too easy to spawn block? Just park something on top and your opponent can't bring the miners in? Of course that's also something tying up your resources if you do that..
