Impressive deep diving to start the video. Deep dive rating - 8/ 10 good job Respect to Val for sorting Robs Chaos dwarves. That's a proper mate , sound af.
I'm just really happy that the guy he sold him to was chill af. He didn't have to sell back any of them, and on top of that, he did so for what he paid - not what they were worth. Just a very legit dude.
Just got the rulebook and forces of fantasy as well as started working on an old world empire army. This podcast played a major role on getting me hyped for this game enough to take the plunge
Nice, I'm still tracking down a copy of forces of fantasy. Got the other books I wanted though. Enjoy :) PS I listen to this channel much more than I play
04:50 My club is heating up. We started with 5 players. 3 new (khemri, brett and chaos warriors) and 2 old armies. Now we got a high elf and an ork player who have gotten a small army together and a third WE player slowly assembling his forces. So from 4 to 7. This hobby takes time. Especially with not everything out yet and/or sold out.
im playing a 1000pt tournamnet this weekend , as CD ... so this came out in a good time for me! not for list building for saturday... but going forward
My local game store doesn't stock TOW because at launch they tried to get a bunch of stuff in and GW sent none of it. Now he doesn't even bother trying because GW was already his most difficult distributor and for TOW it's basically impossible to stock anything reliably. This means there isn't anyone in the store playing, no one seeing it on the shelves, so no new players. I think a lot of the "slow down" is just GW failing to meet the extremely high initial demand.
I’ve just started my return to Chaos Dwarfs, similar to Rob I had to sell my humble Dwarf army back in 2013. I started regrowing it and the line got pulled off the shelf - I came fore tactics and Chaos Dwarf info, I left with Feels. Amazing what Val has done there, that’s a true brother ❤.
Best description I've ever seen for 8th edition was the rat dart guide on underempire. If you can make an old world video version of that guide it will help a LOT of people. I'm especially intrested in the theory of how to position skirmishers in order to aim enemy chargers in a particular direction and how the center to center pivot and break can be used for benefit.
Painting up my lava bases for my entire Chaos Dwarf army as I'm listening to you guys. I laughed out lout when your show came up on my que and I saw what it was about. THE BEST
Putting together an Old World Chaos Dwarf army has been the most enjoyable hobby projects I've worked on in a long time. It really got me stoked for square based wargaming in a way I hadn't been for a long time. All it took was to give my favourite childhood army a new lease of life with some fun rules - who knew!
I don’t think folks realize how versatile this list is. Such a great list! Now if they just add the Taurus mount back to the Castellan profile someday, I’ll be over the moon.
Also if Chaos dwarfs are a core faction, unlike vamps or lizardmen with huge model support, that tells me that infernal guard are getting a plastic release. They already had CAD files for the resin minis so that feels like SOMETHING is getting released.
9:00 me and my local Warhammer manager had our first game yesterday. I don't know how the overall numbers are doing, but that's at least 2 new people yesterday.
I recently got back into Warhammer because of friends and the Old world, played 5th edition fantasy back in the day. This podcast (I typically listen via Pocketcasts) is so bloody good -I'm always mad not having more episodes to listen to while hobbying! Thanks for making great content!
Thanks to 9th Age I have a mixed army of old Chaos Dwarfs, Forgeworld artillery and LOA models. I'm not a good player but when I go to an event with my army full of original models and everyone marvels at my army, I feel like the chosen one 😊
Just on the comment about the game being dead - not at all. It's just getting started! I'm putting together a Wood Elf list from whatever bits I can get my hands on and convert until the minis are re-released. I've been playing what games I can, and it's just by far and away the best wargame GW's make atm. I had a game of 40k last night and was like, "this is fine, but it's just not Old World!"
Felt the bro love on that one. Bro love is the best. Also, I pretty much immidiately popped on Old world builder and made what I'm now dubbing the "10-10 list" which includes 500 hobgoblin archers so thanks for that lol.
A couple observations: You skipped over the Lammasu's Sorcerous Exhalation optional ability. Str4 -2ap breath weapon for 15 pts. Not Black Dragon good but better than standard Dragon Breath. Must take imo. The other Lammasu ability, not mentioned, is Sorcerous Miasma, which turns your opponent's Ogre Blade or other magic weapon into just a standard hand weapon. It also makes the Lammasu immune to the Dragon Slaying Sword (an item that will likely be in most tournament lists). The Lammasu is so good imo, and cheep, you should be taking two lvl two Sorcs each on one. Hobgoblin Khan: You should be taking one on a wolf with Ruby Ring and imbedded in a 5 unit Hobgob wolf rider unit with Feigned Flight. A highly highly mobile Ruby Ring unit that is extremely difficult to get rid of. Hobgoblin Wolfriders: Best light cav in the game. Boss move but kina gimmicky: Get off a Travel Mystical Pathway from Elementalism on a 15+ unit of Blunderbuss, park em 12 from whatever big block unit you want to delete with 30+ shots.
I feel like whenever people online are trying to gauge the health of the game, they aren't seeing the whole picture. They are just looking at the competitive tip of the iceberg and dont see the vast majority that just play home games with friends.
@niceboldt7295 The more we can hype it up the better. The game needs a constant supply of new players to survive. Like any game, I suppose. Hopefully it will continue to grow and not just appeal to returning Fantasy players. I think GW really needs to add some entirely fresh ranges for the game to survive. Entirely fresh players won't be attracted by stale minis. Even if I think they're pretty cool 😎
I'm playing my first real game this weekend. Got the bret box day of release (in aus... So like 3 weeks late). Played a learning 3 way game just to see the rules. But this sat playing 1600 pts! :D
Storm of ash plus the Lammasu’s beard means your blob of chorfs is getting hit on -1 with a 5+ ward in shooting! That is insane! I don’t know if you can stack that with the ashen banner for an additional -1.
I do like the chaos dwarves so it's exciting to see, I do wish you guys would touch on dark elves though, they never got an overview video and they are a legacy army like chaos dwarves too
9:13 in, Hell, I think we'll see a bit of a spike as soon as Dwarf pre-orders drop. Also, some people are just now getting their rulebooks because the gw store finally got their restock a couple of weeks ago.
I was just thinking about printing up a chaos dwarf army. I don't really have any evil armies and I feel like I should. Lost Kingdom Miniatures has a gorgeous line of STLs for them, though I wish I could get the classic minis.
Also, just want to say, I love Val's best magic weapon idea. I am the opposite of Val in that I always look at that weapon in lists first in the vain how it might be worth taking (it rarely is). Being forced to take it would be fun.
Hey Rob - do you know the footprint of the Dreadquake Mortar? I have the OG metal Earth shaker model which I want to use instead & it’s clearly much much smaller….so I want to make up a base to make sure I don’t get a modelling advantage & the rules don’t mention a base size.
Good allies for Cd would like chaos hero on chaos plus some knights, of coarse use those old bighat bull centaurs for those and then 2-3 units of 5 chaos hounds with poisoned attacks, those are like 30 pts per unit, good chaff and poisoned attacks might, if you are lucky to like do damage to some big scary monster...
I think the Iron Daemon poses hard questions. If my army only has so many hard-hitting, fast things: do I charge the artillery and take it out of action, or do I charge the daemon and take away its impact hits?
Thanks for the deep dive! I want to try a brick of sneaky gitz in open order near an overseer sigil, unlike the other hobgoblins the sneaky gitz lack warband and horde and would benefit the most from the sigil
Wow. Imagine not just trollmoting that ToW is dead, but actually believing that… As for Chorfs: I’m excited to get my first game in. I have about 60/40 Legion of Azgorh from FW/Dwarves (sic) of Fire Canyon from Alternative Miniatures. Been sitting in boxes for a decade just waiting for something like this😊 And, I’m absolutely using my K’daai Destroyer. Should run pretty well nearly unchanged from Tamurkhan.
Lamasu is still lumbering like all monstrous creatures. Also no ap on the stomps. Its the same problem the wyvern has, but you dont have a real alternative for a wyvern. A sorc prophet can take the bale taurus and be a massive melee threat.
You glossed over the "can you stack the mantle of stone?" there pretty quickly :D It's quite the debate over at CHAOS DWARFS ONLINE, actually. Because yes, RAW you can absolutely stack those. The only question is, how does it work with the -1 initiative. Can you lower your initiative down to 0? Or even negative? What does that mean in close combat? Do you attack dead last? Can you attack at all? Sorcerer-Prophet with two mantles would already be at 0, but the Castellan can def take two and still be at 1, and the Taur'ruk can also take two and still be at 2. T7 Bull Centaur Taur'ruk? Yes please. As a second point, Sorcerer-Prophet on Lammasu unfortunately does not have 360 vision, that's only for lone characters with troop type infantry or cavalry.
Put the sorc prophet on bale taurus, give him 3 Mantles of stone, as extreamy common items can be taken multiple even for one character, darkforged weapons and like 2-4 Blood of Hashut and you got quite hard to kill caster lord who is also quite good in combat...
@@SquareBasedOldWorld How you feel it fits running with the dwarfs though. Do you think it eats too many points from your warmachine and other dwarf stuff?
I love me a good deep dive esp on a renegade faction!! Don’t tell me how to have fun Gw! Just enable me to have more fun please and thanks. Thanks JTY, maybe next edition we spice up the skaven a little?
Thing about CD warmachines are too expensive for what they do. Regular stone throwers are S8 under the hole and D3+1 wounds. They wound more often and have a more consistent damage output than S6 D6 wounds. O&G can bring 2 rock lobbas and 2 doom divers for way less points, and yet it's not a common sight in O&G armies. I wanted to build horde hobgoblin units too. But night goblin hordes with LD9 holds almost as well, and they can spam fanatics to boot..
This british lad has always been a stange fellow in my mind. Look at him, baseball cap (what? wanna be 20 years old?), beard with the occasional grey hair (like how old are ya?), slapping paint around with no regard to 'eavy metal edge highlighting (what? how dare you hobby without spending a million years with a size 00 brush), talking about miniatures on the internet (lol, what a nerd!)... ....... But ..... then .... he takes off his sweater.... .... ....... HOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYY SHIIIIIIIIITTTTTT! WHAT A LEGEND!!!
1:14:30 - Blundabusses rule for 20 or more shooting getting the bonus is a bit confusing to me. Is if the unit is 20 strong, or if 20 are actually shooting. Because to get 20 shooting in a unit 5 wide, would require a unit of 30 shooting in volly fire on a hill. And that seems unrealistic, but matches more with RAW.
I've got a ton of old-school big hats lying around and want to field them again. However, I'm not sure what to use as an Iron Daemon. Would you accept an old metal Chaos Marine Dreadnought conversion as an Iron Daemon if I add some Chaos Dwarf iconography and parts?
Im still building my bretonnians i have played about 12 games with beastmen. I agree that this game is slow growing because of the realse. I also will need to run ain store event so that the excitement increases.
Thanks for the dive! Unfortunately daemon engine can't reroll the canonade dices with demonic engeneer (it's only for war machine, daemon engine is a chariot)
I feel like you got the mortar, shrieker a bit wrong? Isn’t the difference that the shrieker needs to choose between hard-hitting in the middle hole and big template, mortar gets both?
Why I do not plan on playing war machines is that there are no good targets for them. Most guys in here Play more like napoleonics than medival warfare. There are no blocks to shoot at with templates. Mostly 10-15 models in a unit. 5-6 cav units or skirmishers. Khemri are different but they are immune to chip damage. The only exception are bolt throwers. Cheap and deadly. Easy to get those points back. Also bigger bases do not help template weapons at all.
Playing the game? I watch a game every week, i listen to square based, i paint some night goblins every week BUT I dont play often. Also i hate meta (the company) so I avoid anything that uses their apps as part of a community
I'd be really intrigued to see some stats on the popularity of TOW. I thi k its doing well, but other groups im part of think it's going to die out (which i disagree with and hope never happens!).

They're a bit beefy... there's also the ... stabgrotz? Murder grotz? Anyway the kruelboy goblins are absolutely perfect
@@SquareBasedOldWorld wasn't sure on the size of Hobgoblins. What base size do they use?
Yes it stacks. The toughness thing
Just saw demonic familiar blood of Hashut combo
love an excuse to bring a Runefang, 100 pt wepons are so dumb, but kinda fun how filly it is for first strike.
I really want to make this a format. S-WORDS FOR A THOUSAND
Would armour of bazerak the cruel on a mounted khan leading wolf cav work?
I feel like you got the mortar, shrieker a bit wrong? Isn’t the difference that the shrieker needs to choose between hard-hitting in the middle hole and big template, mortar gets both?
Deep!
TOW ain't dead. It just smells funny.
Seriously guys, I'm here just for Val's dance. I actually mute the podcast.😂
Hey as long as you keep that window open and get our viewer retention up, I'll keep dancing for ya baby
@@SquareBasedOldWorld If I loop the dance, does that count?
It's a Hashut-damned travesty that chorfs aren't a core faction. :(
But hopefully means Gw will drop a bunch of plastics for them!!
@@djludowici536 one can hope, but the question arises, will they have big pointy hats?
@@Wulfsmasher I don’t know. Maybe they will be taking designs from the FW range?
Playing the game? I watch a game every week, i listen to square based, i paint some night goblins every week BUT I dont play often.
Also i hate meta (the company) so I avoid anything that uses their apps as part of a community
I'd be really intrigued to see some stats on the popularity of TOW. I thi k its doing well, but other groups im part of think it's going to die out (which i disagree with and hope never happens!).
That's why we shout vigorously into the void each week. These things are self fulfilling prophecies. Keep showing up and eventually others dive in
@@SquareBasedOldWorld indeed! I've signed up to 3 TOW events now. Be the change you want and all that! 😀
Soooooo….do I get an OG Hobgoblin bolt thrower?
What about the Hellcannon?
The real secret of wargaming is that ALL games are miniature agnostic.
WOOOOOOOOOO!
