I’ve been using the Duet for Mac/IOS for several years now, I recently bought an SSL 2+ for my 2020 IPad Pro because the Maestro app doesn’t see my Duet when using it with my IPad , sadly when I wrote to Apogee the response I got was that it’s not being supported for usb C IPads anymore. Now the SSL is definitely great for its price range, and it’s capable of 24 bit 192k hd recording, but I have to be honest....to my ears the Apogee just sounds better, especially just when listening back thru monitors bs headphones . The SSL sounds good, but it sounds flatter compared to the Apogee. The sounds just seem to have more depth , like it’s in 3d vs 2d . Yes, there are cheaper interfaces than the Apogee, but I can hear the different between my $279 SSL and my $600 Apogee. I have to agree though that I’m not crazy about the Apogees break out cable vs everything being built into the interface on the SSL 2+.

Would it be good for a DAC / AMP for listening to Music via Headphones? Looking at a 2nd hand unit - almost not used for 120 USD. Could add a mic later.
I have the Apogee Duet and the ATH-M50x headphones and listening to music through the headphones is a pleasure - a vast improvement (as it should be) over the onboard audio on my 2012 15" Macbook Pro. As long as your DAC need is listening to music from a USB computer source, I'd recommend it (especially at $120). It's worth noting the only other DAC I've compared it to is the original Apogee Duet Firewire, so I'm not sure what the competition is like these days.
That's a really great review but you made excellent points about the cons. Can you suggest another portable self powered i'face but with the focus on great pre-amps (no noise) / good latency but maybe in the 200 - 400 range? Obvs been looking at the Steinberg UR22 / Komplete 6 and the Scarlet series... Looking for hardware durability too so the Audient doesnt appeal because of the knobs on the top of the interface. What about the Roland Rubix - any thoughts? Thanks so much in advance for responding if you get a chance. Oh, and forgot to mention the dealbreaker - has to work seamlessly also with iOS (iPad mini)!
i just got the duet 2 basically brand new for a little under $300. check on reverb or the resale market in general and you can find a pretty good deal.
How do dedicated preamps work? I get the general idea of them supplying x dB of clean gain allowing you to use less of the onboard preamp in an interface, but for some of the dedicated preamp boxes (like the ART Tube MP) can they just be plugged into the interface with an XLR cable like Mic>Preamp input>Preamp output>Interface>PC?
