I've got a Duet 1 Firewire too. It's a paradox in the fast lived computer world. An excellent piece of hardware, does not seem to age. I wish I could hook it up to my 2022 M1

Using this with Mac Sonoma on my my old mac mini i7... Still beats most portable interfaces till this day, especially the convertors and headphone out...another shock..the convertors on this are actually better than my previously owned UAD Apollo.

Thanks for this video! I'm using a FW Duet for my VO and music recording within Catalina and it seems to continue to work fine. Honestly, no I don't. I got my Firewire to Thunderbolt 1, and Thunderbolt 1 to 3 dongles directly from Apple at one of their stores. Not cheap at all, but incredibly glad they work. I've had mixed success with anything non-Apple brand that has a thunderbolt connection, so have started just sucking it up and paying their crazy prices

@@stick_figure7858 I'm pretty sure the thunderbolt to firewire device is just using PCIE lanes(which thunderbolt can carry) to a firewire chip(intended for a PCIE card) inside the adaptor, so the expense is somewhat understandable for that device.
Other brands seem to be even more expensive, albeit they're all overpriced in comparison to the pcie cards.
I think the thunderbolt - thunderbolt adaptor is decoding & re-encoding it(both ways) for the different standards, which also adds some cost.

I just got my hands one for 40 dollar, complete in box and deluxe carrying case. I’m going to use it on my MacBook Pro late 2011(upgraded with SSD’s and 16gb of ram, will be 32gb soon) with Logic and GarageBand and I hope that FL studio will also play with it.
I’m a beginner into making music, bought courses for both Logic and FL studio hoping to be able to make beats. Also want to buy a guitar in the future which I want to hook up with the Apogee and use that with my MBP as the amp, not necessarily record it (at least right away) but for practice and playing for the fun of it.
So in short, did I do good on buying the apogee for this or do I best try and resell it to buy something else? I bought it on a whim really because I immediately fell in love with the aesthetics (minus the breakout but can’t really do without any cable anyway) and 40 bucks seemed like a bargain.

Personally I think that interface is PERFECT for a MacBook Pro late 2011, as that is actually my original laptop I bought this interface for. It's also great for that computer, since it has a firewire connection so you can use that and free up your other ports. It is a fantastic little interface that sounds great

@@stick_figure7858 Thanks for replying. It is indeed a perfect and gorgeous little device, feels very sturdy and well made and honestly have the feeling that it isn’t even used all that much as I can’t find a single scratch or anything on it and the break-out cable also looks as if it’s just out of the box. It came in a protective pouch which tells me that at the very least the previous owner was real careful with it.
Worked out of the box and all the DAW’s immediately recognized it and no further configuration was needed. The sound coming through is very good on my Sony WH-900 series, this afternoon my studio monitors will come in and I’m very curious as to how they will sound in combination with the duet. Mackie CR3’s which I also bought for the criminally low price of $50, judging by the photos they are also as good as new. I bought stagg TRS (balanced) cables to hook those up, that is the best way to go, at least that’s what I read or heard in reviews.
I never thought I would have a complete home studio for the (relatively) low amount of money I did spend. All in all I have a decent mic on an arm stand(not sure how that’s called in English) with a shock mount, an Arturia Minilab mk2, Apogee Duet FireWire, Mackie CR3 active studio monitors and all cables for a little over $175,- not including a 24” Lenovo monitor as extra which a friend gave me as well as Magic Trackpad and keyboard I bought from money I made of my old Magic Mouse came down evenly and the MacBook Pro I already had, bought that 2 years ago for $125.
Wish I had known that earlier, I would’ve definitely started earlier making music.

But when I tried connect monitors via headphone output it was 9000% difference. Sound from main output like mono and with lowcut filter in comparison of headphone output. Also I hear huge noise when in 44100 mode from headphone jack but not from 48khz. The huge noise is also when I connect’s Apple Studio Display to the macbook. And if you type something or use trackpad/mouse this noise is so annoying… So the quality of the DUET is not so good (( 😢 Next is drivers and maesto which not working with M1. Yes I can make it working if type a few commands in terminal under safe mode when booting mac os. But after each mac update they removes firewire driver again and again…. That's super weird, because I can't imagine the 2019 MacBook Pro is too different than the 2018 Mac mini. I just checked, and I am on Catalina 10.15. I am running Apogee Maestro 2.10, and there is a newer version of Maestro than that, but I'm afraid to update since it is working as is. Is Maestro simply not recognizing the Duet Firewire at all?

Un install and then re install the Maestro 2 software. It should work great with Catalina- it does on my iMac.

I had to install Version 2.10.2 in my iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) for it to recognize my Duet FireWire. It's on High Sierra.

Thanks for the great video. You are giving me hope that I can extend the life of my beloved FireWire Duet! I’ve already been using the FW to Thunderbolt adapter for a while. Now when I search for Thunderbolt 1 to Thunderbolt 3 adapters, I only see an adapter for TB 2 to TB 3. Will that do the trick?

They weren’t cheap. If I remember correctly each was around $30 or $40.
For my Mac Mini, I just use a somewhat nice monitor I got off Facebook marketplace. One caveat to getting a Mac Mini is I have an Intel one, not one of the new M1 models. I’m not sure if the Duet would work on those or not

My Duet FW still works fine...for the most part. My mic preamps no longer work. When I try to record with my mic, I get a lot of static. My DAW only records the static. Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions....shy of buying a new interface?

    • @stick_figure7858

I occasionally get static with mine, but usually simply readjusting or reseating my XLR cables fixes that issue (personally I think I just need new XLR cables in my case). If you are only getting static all the time and have tried different cables, then the only other thing I could think it could be, other than a broken device, would be the breakout cable could be damaged

to get a cord that works with a mac that uses USBC (thunderbolt 1). (This cord would be thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 1aka usbc) go on ebay! There is one I just ordered for 9.50$. Do not buy this through apple. I needed to get my old apogee duet to work on my new M1 mac and finally found this solution.
