  • Topaz Photo AI promises to apply AI technology to enhance and improve the quality of photos. Photo AI features image resizing, Noise Reduction and Sharpening technology, all using AI. So, can it improve the quality of your photos, and how does it compare with the likes of Topaz Gigapixel for image resizing?
In this video, I put Topaz Photo AI to work on one of my Micro Four Thirds images to see if it can enlarge and improve the image quality. I’m testing both the RAW file processing and a JPEG image. This is also a useful introductory tutorial for Topaz Photo AI if you’ve never used the software.

Hi Robin - it's worth checking the preferences on the latest versions - many more options on controlling the behavious of the program now, including, as an example, option to turn of lens correction. Thanks for the very helpful contribution as always. Kirk

The product has improved, but try it with trees against a bright sky, and all kinds of artifacts turns up. Also even a 2x upscale will render circular or elliptic shapes - like wheels - as polygons.

It doesn need further development and in my opinion not as good as the individual products. I do like the idea though and Topaz are always trying to improve their products.

@@RobinWhalley Yes, always, but a real breakthrough since the single AI tools made a significant difference in reducing noise and in sharpening seems to be in the distant future.

Topaz AI seems like a great idea but I've seen lots of reviews with similar results. It sometimes adds artifacts etc that the individual Topaz tools don't. Hopefully, they will keep improving because a single AI-powered tool would be great.

I'm sure they will keep improving it. I remember the very first release of Gigapixel. I found it terrible. But it wasn't too long before the results were best in class.

I usually prefer Sharpen AI over Photo AI - the results are typically more natural looking with fewer artefacts. I find this a bit odd.

I also tend to find the individual applications produce better results but they require more effort. I'll probably be doing some more detailed comparisons in the future.

its really impressive when it works. but i find it waay too aggressive in many cases even with no upscaling or ANYTHING it can make faces look like they are made of plastic
even with recover faces set to max

It also depends to some degree on the starting image. I'm going to do a few more comparisons in the future.

I also had a similar experience. Gigapixel AI results were better than Photo AI 🤷‍♂️

I've since done a little more work with the Photo AI software and I've found it fantastic for my iPhone images as in this video (ua-cam.com/video/syLDdm8UVA8/v-deo.html). With phone photography there's very little difference between the performance of the individual products and Photo AI. Photo AI just makes the workflow easier in my opinion. It's worth testing this out if you do any phone photography.

@@RobinWhalley Yes, I realized that too. It seems that there are better results also with jpg. Sometimes when I load an image into Photo AI, I don't see any difference between before and after and only after adjusting one thing or another does the image improve. But the program is supposed to do that automatically with autopilot. 🤷‍♂️

@@RSV9 Yes, Autopilot should do it but I find a lot of the time it doesn't with my images. It often fails to select the subject. After fixing that I find I need to check some of the settings depending what I'm doing. It's still a great piece of software though.

So gigapixel is better? Or maybe sharpen ai? @@RSV9

Topaz Photo "Ai" is now a misnomer. They have significantly reduced the "Ai" the program does and turned it into Topaz "MW" (Make Work). They meet every challenge with yet another "Manual" adjustment option or preference option so what used to be "Ai" on Autopilot is now gone. Batch processing is no longer possible on anything other than photos that are very good to start with. There are manual options like toggling on 'Reducing Noise' (which is a silly name for a switch since it should be labelled 'Reduce Noise'). On photos filled with noise and artifacts that Autopilot totally misses, that can be toggled on and the program works like magic to remove the noise. That, however, creates thousands upon thousands of PERCENT MORE WORK for the user because Autopilot doesn't work on batches of images. Instead of fixing this they are spending all their time and energy on adding useless features that try to mimic what the other excellent programs do that most photographers already have. Honestly, it is like they are getting the cream of the crop of Romper Room graduates into their development pool. The features work amazingly well individually but "Ai" is a thing of the past with Photo Ai.

    Everyone comes up with the "individual softwares" (Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel AI);
there won't be any individual softwares any more.
Topaz Labs' focusing only on the Photo AI. Period 😂
