One other thing is they totally support veterans. All veterans receive 50% off all orders forever. This made me buy all of Castles and Crusades products. Thank you C&C.
Also, they extend this to Canadian military and veterans as well (which to me is huge! I've ordered many of their products and am a very vocal supporter of TLG)
After playing a B/X clone for a couple of years, we switched to C&C and I love how it marries the simplicity of old school play (monster stat blocks that aren't 3 paragraphs long and arguably more compact than both AD&D & BECMI's) and the streamlined, modern system provided by the SIEGE engine. It feels like AD&D without the AD&D wackiness that those of us under 40 won't appreciate as much.
I also recommend their various "setting" books that basically show you how to play in pseudo-historical settings (Vikings, Greeks, etc.) with C&C. Even in you don't play them with C&C, they are chock full of good content.
@@BrianYoungauthor I meant "pseudo" as in "with fantasy elements" but yes, the information is surprisingly accurate to real history (as we understand it).
I was flipping through my copy the current “Castle Keeper’s Guide” just the other day and am just really impressed by it. It really is on a par with the 1E DMG in terms of how useful and in depth it is! And yes, that reimagined 1E cover art is beautiful!
Castle and Crusades is actually on their 9th printing as of Monday morning. I just purchased the 3 cores books. To be clear, the PHB is 9th printing. However as you pointed out, the 7th printing is free and you can't beat that. I think the 8th and 9th printing has some very minor Errata according to the devs on TLG discord.
great game. Their monster book ( which is huge ) on sale at Amazon for 33 bucks american - players handbook hardcover for 36$. And the Castle Keepers guide is considered the 2nd greatest GM guide of all time!!
Castles & Crusades is great and Troll Lord Games is headed by great people. I have DM/CK’d some old school and homebrew adventures in Greyhawk using C&C for my son’s group. Fun times!
This game was my introduction to the OSR. And it remains my favorite game because I need the fewest house rules to make it just how I like it. Super easy to grasp if you've played most editions of D&D.
Out of all the recommendations for hew TTRPG's that is and was floating around on Twitter, C&C was the game that definitly caught my eye! I have had a few interactions with Troll Lord Games regarding the game as well and they are really great and sound people! This is a company I feel I really can support - and although I have other TTRPG's that fill my gaming needs I will get C&C in case my players really insist on playing That Game; then I can show then C&C.
Thanks Bear! I've recently moved back to the Midwest where I'm from after having lived in New Orleans for 20 years. And once again I'm able to game face to face with my best friend, and his wife, my other best friend. We were thinking of revisiting 2nd edition among other games, but I want to branch out and we'll be looking over Castles & Crusades! Thanks!
yes, C&C has a nice vibe. i wouldn't have known were it not for this video. thanks! the ability mods even have the b/x bell curve! :) that's what i checked first. it looks like the kind of game i yearn to play.
When I finally get myself ready with everything that I want to do. I plan to run Barrowmaze using C&C in The Lost Lands from Frog God Games. I am very happy with Frog God Games right now because they started doing there Lost Land stuff using C&C.
I’m very attracted to C&C, but it has the same problem old-school D&D always had: there's not enough features for fighters or things for them to do in combat. I’d play it, but I’d have to use my 2e house rules.
I concur. Though, you can add the Advantages from the Castle Keeper's Guide or even adapt OSE's Fighter Talents from that issue of Carcass Crawler. The nice part about C&C is that it is easily modular and that means you can do everything you want, even importing AD&D 2e house rules :)
I started with D&D 5 ED two years ago. Now that I have been exposed to C&C and Harp. I will never go back. I can play solo and with my group very easily. I can convert any 5E modules into C&C very easily. Thank you for the video!!
I looked at this one and didn't really see anything that really made it stand out to me. The next OSR games I'm probably going to try are Black Sword Hack and Dragon Bane. I'm a roll under guy, though. I looked at barebones fantasy a bit, and I think it seems cool. I would love to hear a review of that game.
We are live playing it on Fridays and starting in February alternate Mondays, but maybe I can do a review... I'm not much of a review guy, but I can try :)
Players handbook is in its 8th print now, castle keeper's guide is on its 3rd print and monsters & treasures on it's 5th print. C&C is a great game. The mechanics are fast and solid. I have nothing but praise for it. Better D&D than wotc ever made. Read it, a lot, and would love to play it. So far, I've only ever tested it solo. Got the most recent prints of the aformentioned books, right before Christmas. Think I have the second print of the players guide and monsters & treasures too 🤔 Troll Lord Games are gamers who love their game and care about the community. The kind of people you want running the show, as it were. And good guys to boot, from what I hear 🤘
A question, and a bit of a maker/breaker for me; if I buy the Starter Bundle hardcovers do I get the .pdfs of those books as well? I've been over Troll Lord Games site and can't seem to locate that information, which makes believe that such is not the case... But I thought I'd try here since it seems that several people are already owners of the core books. Thanks!
For the longest time I had been under the impression that C&C was "just" another version of D&D 3E. Queue this whole disaster with the OGL and some algorithm magic and I too found myself looking into C&C. To my delight I have discovered that I and the people who call C&C a version of 3E were wrong. This is a nicely cleaned up version of AD&D 2E. I love 2E but it has been too long since I played it, and reading the old books has me scratching my head going, "that's not how we played, is it?". Anyway, what was supposed to be an OSE campaign is now a C&C campaign, and I've been buying books and PDF's like there's no tomorrow to get all I need. I bow humbly before the lords of the trolls.
@@protonneutron9046 I know sir, lol. I am asking what you meant when you said "5e designers took it from C&C."? What we have here is a communication breakdown lol Now, what did 5e take from C&C? That is the question :)

The new 8th printing book is really good. It's the most overhauled printing yet. They put all 24 levels of the classes in one book for the first time.
I'm holding out for the OGL free reprintings they've announced :)

They aren't 'Pseudo-Historical', they ARE Historical, and with the myths too. There is a difference!
