  • The Junior Peterson is an affordable portable sawmill, packed with big features for your part-time sawmilling projects. Here the Junior Peterson (JP) can be seen cutting some very hard seasoned Jarrah.
    These were old power poles that a customer wanted milled. There were several to be done, this is only footage of one (from start to finish). We did the lot for him using the JP, with only sharpening the blade once during the whole job!
    We were highly impressed with how the JP cut the timber. This just shows that even our "baby" sawmill can handle the tough jobs.

    Not a criticism, why not add flat triangle corner braces to horizonal motor carrier to cure the "walking" motion?

    How wide of a slab can it cut?
    I like it. My bandsaw mill can cut 30inch diameter, I dont cut that often mostly just standard lumber but it is nice for alot of different projects.

      Hi there, the Junior Peterson with a clip on slabber can cut up to 44" wide slabs or with the circular blade you can double cut up to 4"x12" or standard cut up to 6"x6"

    Hello, Peterson's. I have read a couple of places that the swing blade sawmills are best used to saw LARGE logs. Some have also suggested that bandsaw mills are better equipped to handle smaller logs (than a swing blade would be). Do you have any comments on this? Many thanks.

      Just my 50 cents but a swing blade can do large aswell as small because you don't need to turn log.band saws are limited to the guides so you'll never get close to the same size log that the swing blade can take.also the wood you take off the swing blade is finished product as some of the bandsaw stuff would have to be put through another machine to finish unless you producing just slabs. Just a couple of things to think about.

      The one con about a swing blade is the blades do cost more. As for how economical they are over time I have no idea. I would think the carbide tooth lasts longer in this hard wood. The blades do take more wood out than a band mill. Not a whole lot to dislike about a swing blade, the question is do you want to move the log or the saw? I have no experience with a band mill to be fair, I'm still torn as well. In talking to a guy that uses a band mill he stated the band mill does start to make wavey cuts when dull. That seems like a huge down vote for the band mill.

      Horses for courses. I would never cut hardwood with a portable band mill. Plus if you are on hardwood the smaller diameter logs are more stress so that bigger logs have less stress and move less when you break their back, I've cut all diameters of Aussie hardwood log on a Lucas mill, the problem is you want a steel frame bed you can dog logs into so they don't move when you cut them, that's something these guys need to design. Best way w/o any steel bed is to put 3 8x8" runners down with some heft, bed them into ground then level them with the mill, then use wedges to keep the logs in place but they will still move especially when you get lower down in the log and it is not as heavy etc.

      A blade mill is way more versatile than a band mill, yep worth the extra money IMHO

    This is better design generally than Lucas which has more vibration as the rails adjust not the carriage as the Petersen does, this leaves the rails on the solid ground. Also Petersen appear to stabilise the mill long ways not across with the top bars on some of their mills it appears more sturdy than Lucas also. I've never used a Petersen but I've owned 2x lucas mills and they are great but I think Petersen have done a better design and more improvements that you see from Lucas. Also Petersen get the credit of designing the swing blade, however they never patented the Aussie market and Lucas apparently took the design and patented it in Australia. Petersen's biggest mistake, if the story is true and I believe it is.

    I'm stoked that old power poles are being recycled like this! The millions of trees that were sacrificed for electricity will have a prolonged life, hopefully showing their beauty in furniture. The offcuts should be trimmed into "turner's blanks" for export to US & Candian woodturners who appreciate the hardness and colour of genuine WA Jarrah and pay good dollars for it. Shame that so much has been chopped up for firewood 😦

      So how does it compare to the Lucas Mill? Looks similar. This looks like a damn nice mill. You are not easily getting into the Bush with a woodmizer. Not without leaving one hell of a trail behind you.

    Seems like a lot more waste than a band saw type rig...but you aren't necessarily cutting slabs

    • @PetersonSawmills
      @PetersonSawmills  4 роки тому +1

      I guess the difference is that you're getting the BEST out of a log with a swingblade mill. You can cut more selectively if needed. The more proficient our operators become, the more they get out of the log though.
