A nice, basic, practical and simple EV... this is what we need more of. I love the simple tactile buttons... why is this an EV anomaly, when it should be the norm? I wish they would make it available to the public, the word over. This is a car for "the people".

Nice to see the taxi trade being focused on. As a taxi driver in Manchester, England I appreciate it.
FYI a taxi does over 25k miles per year at an average speed of 17mph and 99% of journeys are single passengers. I drive between 80 and 130 miles on an average shift.
I've done 55k miles in my Ioniq electric and it's a perfect vehicle for the job.
I'm driving a 2018 version (2016 design) so it's not particularly cutting edge but it shows that we're way past the threshold of practicality.
On the downside I've contacted the council several times to help promote electric taxis but have yet to have a single reply to my emails.
In 2022 it seems dealing with inner city pollution from diesel engines is still only a lip service for our politicians!

This is the sort of machine i have wanted to see for a long time and would love to have. Simple, cheap, focussed on comfort and practicality. Not bling and feature bloat and statistics and 'luxury'
I feel like most of Elliots criticisms seemed rather elitist and misplaced. There is no need or want for 'premium materials'. I really hope he isnt falling for the 'vegan leather' is sustainable myth - its generally just plastic. LESS materials is the best way to sustainability.

Yeah, I'm with you on the 'vegan' leather thing. Particularly when the objection to real leather is often prevention of cruelty to animals as this doesn't account for differing standards of animal husbandry across the world. Also it's rather daft to be super keen to put the O&G industries out of business whilst completely overlooking the fact that all vehicles, regardless of propulsion type, are full of items whose feedstocks originate from within the O&G industries, right on down to the coatings on wiring.

An eMPV - brilliant! This version as the taxi, a slightly different spec as a family vehicle (may cost a bit more).
I'd keep the hard-wearing materials, delete the SOS buttons, add 40:20:40 split 2nd row and a 3rd row that can stow folded flat in the cargo floor, then make sure it has the fastest recharge the underlying tech can manage.
    That's a properly useful car.
When the Ampera was released I remember asking Opel when the Zafira derivative was going to arrive (T-shaped battery prevented it). We're finally seeing some manufacturers thinking of family-sized 7-seat vehicles that aren't chonking great SUVs. And to be able to choose is a good thing.

5:28 I get that tech is mostly marketing these days, but : LCD is the layer that lets the light through from the colour behind it. LED is one of the type of light sources behind the colour filter (whether directly behind it or with a light guide from the edge). Before LED, the light source was a fluorescent "lamp", like the tube lights.
Now I doubt that they would use a fluorescent backlight, as LED is cheaper these days. I suppose the LED-backlit LCD is just a mediocre quality in this case? 🤔

Can you please ask the car manufacturers to make a wheelchair acceptable EV taxi? All the Hackney taxis in my town have to be WAV and we also are going to need to run WAV vehicles as Private Hire also.
No one is currently making an affordable BEV WAV taxi. There are some hybrid WAV vehicles but they are not good enough and very expensive.

@@AsphaltAntelope i think the only ones i know of are the "london" taxis, which are now ev with range extending diesels . in places like Barcelona I think they mandate that every 10th taxi or something is a larger vehicle.. based on something like a kangoo. London's also pretty decent for accessible buses and tubes (considering how old the infrastructure is) but obviously could be better. Whether it's better to have every vehicle the size and layout of a london cab (they are twice the cost of this car) or to somehow mandate coverage of a smaller number of better accessible vehicles (call it a blue badge uber where blue badge holders get priority pick-ups etc) who knows. will likely depend on the city etc. Cities could certainly incentivise it by making the licence fees cheaper if it's wheelchair accessible. or similar.

A really practical and sensible design. I remember when the very basic Ford Cortina was released into the U.K. in the 1960s, it took the country by storm and changed our views on practical no frills cars forever. Funny, every time a really practical car is launched, it is based on the ideas behind the Renault Espace and Scenic. If only Renault realised this themselves... Where is the EV MP, Renault? This is also what most people who insist to have any SUV should have bought instead. No nonsens, just a ton of space. Love it. No big wheels stealing space and no long bonnet for no reason.

I really don't get SUVs, I've had a Honda jazz kind of mini MPV and my friend has a ford galaxy and for a car of its size, as in fairly large, but probably the same or smaller than a big sub, it has an enormous amount of interior space, 7 seats or a huge boot and 3 proper chairs in the middle row. The Citroen Berlingo and sister cars and the old env200 are the only empvs around now I think but new they are £30kish, still very expensive but I suppose the market is starting to bring them out probably more coming.

Now if you can get a wheelchair in there that would be nice. The boot looked pretty big, he did say the back seats can lay down, but can they move back and forward? Does it have sliding doors both sides? If not they need to do that. It looks like a very good replacement for the first generation Leaf and Prius cabs in my part of SW London. If the driver position is comfortable and ergonomic for a long day, then the rest is irrelevant. You only need to compete with the cheap end of the market of ICE cars. The maximum time most passengers will spend is measured in10s of minutes, and they will almost certainly not notice.

Have to disagree with Elliott about the plastic. Anything less for a vehicle that's meant to have high 90-95% usage compared to the standard domestic usage of 5-10% would be silly as it just wouldn't stand up to the same levels of wear & tear & probably soon begin to look decidedly tatty.
But for a car meant for the taxi industry, many a family would appreciate it for their daily driver; basic & straightforward, sticky fingers & muddy feet wipe clean proof - what's not to love about that? 😅
