Special thanks to Jenni Brammall at the Australian Opal Centre.
This is by no means an exhaustive look at Australian opal. There are many other opal fields and opal bearing areas, and heaps more examples of opal formations, types, colours and weird quirks of geology. If there's a particular area or type of opal you'd like to see more about, please leave a comment!
These examples were chosen from a selection of specimens; they don't necessarily represent the "best of the best" of each opal category. They're all beautiful, though!

Great presentation Jenny, but Quilpie and Winton-Longreach areas produced superb gem quality opals equal to Lightning Ridge's top gems. I know, I mined them and saw them mined by associates.
Very nicely done... I have some fossilized opal with some dinosaur bone. Love it! ❤
Great episode!! Australia has so much beautiful and unique opal!! Opal in quartz!? So cool!! :)

🤯 wow blew my mind! Great Video
Thank you so much!
Very cool! Those Tintenbar opals, could you not keep them in a fine mineral oil? I only ask as the mineral oil wont evaporate off.
MrTatts64 Yes absolutely, mineral oil would also preserve those beautiful stones. As they’re part of the Australian Opal Centre’s collection, though, they remain presented as they were donated. Thank you for your comment! 😄
you have some beautiful Opal there oneplace you did not mention is Cloncurry they have some very nice boulder opal there as well😊
Hi Douglas! Absolutely, Queensland boulder opal has some of the most vibrant play of colour you’ll find in Australian opal. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😁👍
Appear interesting career/job/hobby.
The colours are very intensive & well dispersed like what nature does. Thanks
