O how amiable are thy dwellings, thou Lord of hosts!
My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord:
My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
Yea, the sparrow hath found her a house,
And the swallow a nest where she may lay her young:
Even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house:
They will be always praising thee.
The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us:
Prosper thou the work of our hands upon us.
O prosper thou our handywork.
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.
OurSeaBee The use of the St. Anne tune (O God, Our Help) isn't accidental. Vaughan Williams used the tune as a basis for the anthem. You can hear snippets of it throughout the anthem in various places. Also, the texts of the psalms (84 and 90) used for this anthem are theologically related to hymn text generally associated with the tune.
O God our help was a kind of rallying popular anthem during the Battle of Britain
Just wonderful, and very moving. Thank you.
It's 'The New Church Anthem Book' by Lionel Dakers (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1994).
Are they singing out of a book? What book?
To be fair the tempo indication at the opening is slow. The problem for me is the lack of accelerando later which is also marked. And not enough dynamic variation. It's either loud or very loud whereas much of it is marked p or mf. Nice sound though
Deadly tempo! It's not supposed to be a dirge!!
You think they could have sung this any SLOWER
My goodness! If the tempo were any slower they would be singing it backwards. And you can hear that it's hard on their breath control.
BTW, "O God our help" is in the original score.
Yes, it's a hard piece. I thought I'd pass out holding my breath because they didn't come in as soon as I expected after the first phrase.
Does anybody else find this piece a bit strange? And 'Oh God Our Help' is tacked on at the end by accident.
