  • In this vlog I look at Aqua jogging or deep water running, and show how effective it has been to not only maintain fitness when injured but it can also be used as extra cardio work - added into existing programmes, helping to improve form and fitness resulting in faster running times on land!

Sadly I now have a burst L5/S1 disc in my back. Keeping mobile helps alleviate pain, but at the same time impact is agony. I can't run at all now. I can now swim lengths again and use that as my main exercise three to four times a week, but when I was first injured I couldn't. Also, you need core strength, but anything you'd normally do to work that hurts. What first helped me enormously was doing this kind of aqua jogging (with and without a float). It was the difference between being active and not. The psychological benefits of that were enormous too. I'm a big fan of it. :)
I do miss being able to run though 😭

Eilish I'm really enjoying your vids. I broke my toe a few weeks ago doing some D.I.Y. on a rest week after running a Marathon. I've been doing the spinning work out you mentioned in your other video and it's hard work. This Video has made me chuckle, my friend has offered me a belt like yours and I will try it but I may struggle not to laugh all the way through it. Keep 'em coming. Thanks for posting :-)

Ah sorry to hear you've broken your toe! Aqua jogging does look ridiculous but it's such a brilliant way to keep fit! Good luck!! :)

Hi, I just found your great vid...like you, I fractured my ankle, eons ago...after 6 surgeries, it was finally bone-on-bone, unable to walk...major pain-killers...finally I had fusion surgery...voila, pain gone, finally after all those years!!! I'm a cyclist, not a runner, but I hike alot. But...my gait is and was screwed up...my hips not aligning properly, etc...so my knees blew out (meniscus) from taking the weight due to my ankle injury. Mostly my right knee, from favouring it to compensate for my left-ankle pain. I cycle like hell, but my knees are hurting...just had cortisone shots (painful), but I might get into deepwater running, if I can figure out how to do it. It does seem boring, though. oh, BTW, I also had 2 spinal surgeries b/c I blew 2 discs mountain cycling.

Great video. Wish I had my own pool to do this in. My physio suggested I do this in the pool but I think I would get more than a few funny looks doing it at my local leisure centre

I always do it in the leisure centre pool. This video was when I was abroad in a communal pool so it was much quieter but when I'm at home it's just the local leisure centre - good luck!

Thanks for the vlog. Would you tend to do only interval type sessions in the pool or also your LSDs? Keep 'em coming 👍🏻

When i'm injured - I do both but mainly interval type sessions. When i'm fit and healthy, I don't do any intervals and only do steady runs in the pool for recovery purposes and for reduced impact.

I have trouble getting my HR above 100 while aquajogging. How do I elevate it better?

    hey eilish !
love your video's but this time I got a question when you do your aquajogging you basicly just do an A skip but not a real running motion your lower leg never reaches forward and your foot always stays behind the knee ?
    Is that on purpose ?
    Kind regards

I find that this motion works better for me - keeping a really fast turnover allows me to keep the heart rate up which maintains my fitness a lot better. I also find that it translates onto land running much better too because I have that faster turnover with the focus being on my front mechanics in the pool. :)
