One more for your list: "North and South" starring Richard Armitage and Daniella Denby Ashe. It's about a London gentlewoman who is forced by circumstances to move to Milton, an industrial town in northern England. She clashes with a mill owner (Armitage) about worker's rights and class issues. It's a love story, too. And you can stare at the gorgeous Mr. Armitage for four hours.

I have no idea why 'The Borgias' 2011 TV series was left off this list. The scenery & costumes in the series were spectacular and breathtaking. It stars Jeremy Irons in the lead role of Rodrigo Borgia/Pope Alexander VI & he portrays the historical figure brilliantly. It ran for 3 seasons before they completely blew the budget on the very costumes that made it such an incredible feast for they eyes but, it is still a must for any period drama fan. The cast was perfect for the character roles & the story lines were intriguing from the get-go.

Can I interest you in the Spanish TV series "Isabel" and its sequel, "Carlos, Rey Emperador"? "Isabel" is, of course, about the rise of Isabella the Catholic to power as well as her reign alongside her husband, Ferdinand of Aragon. "Carlos, Rey Emperador", meanwhile, is about their grandson Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. There's also the movie La Corona Partida, which takes place in the years between Isabel and Carlos. They're not always the most accurate of shows but goddamn do they make good TV and they're three of my most favorite period dramas of all time. 🤩
Apart from those three, I also recommend Maximilian, a three episode German-Austrian miniseries about the romance and marriage of Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy (Charles V's grandparents). 😄

@@PrincessPlotline The problem with that is that we know (letters exist) the adolescent Elizabeth while dependent on that couple (Parr and Thomas Seymour) also feared Seymour's advances, and did not wish to be touched by him. He wanted to force himself on her (his biggest love was his reckless ambition) to get into position of claiming the crown from the young, and dependent on Seymour's brother, king Edward VI. The fact this series romanticised the fears of being sexually abused, and turned it into some grand passion the young Elizabeth must have felt is preposterous (and reprehensible). Also, Elizabeth was notoriously cautious from a very young age, since she knew that the mere fact of her still being alive was due to a miracle. Even before she went to live with the Parr-Seymours, she wrote that she knew all eyes were on her and that she was constantly watched. She wasn't just like any other teenager (neither was her sister Mary when she was a teenager), because few teenagers grow in such perilous circumstances, where your life depends on which way the political die will roll, nor have there been many adolescents so tightly watched and spied upon. There is no way she would have displayed the behaviour they make her display here (especially given the common beliefs about her mother, and the constant questioning of Elizabeth's own legitimacy).
As for the actress, she did not capture the terror the young Elizabeth had to navigate every day of her life, nor Elizabeth's scholarly and witty nature, nor her famous and well-documented cautiousness from a very early age. All this series was interested in was a ridiculous and fake romance slapped on Elizabeth. We only know of one great love Elizabeth Tudor had (although we have no proof of sexual relations, however, if someone suggested that there were such, it would sound plausible), and that would be her love for Robert Dudley.

@@allegory6393 I understand your concerns, and why you can't enjoy this show.
As I'm not a history buff... I don't mind alternate interpretations of history. Specially with events that took place such a long time ago. Even now, with all the "traces" people leave behind when they die (social media, computer files, etc) you can never truly know someone. A lot of people fill pages and pages of social media and paint an unreal picture of their lives.
If Elizabeth was such a careful person, and she felt she was being watched all the time, it's not that farfetched to think that she could also believe someone would read her letters. She could have lied. Or you could be right. But we can't be 100% sure. I'm willing to suspend disbelief.

@@PrincessPlotline With all due respect, it is not an ‘alternate interpretation of history’ (such happen all the time in the discipline of history, as current concerns spur re-interpretations of the past (however remote). ‘Becoming Elizabeth’ fabricates facts and places them in the place of facts we know and have evidence for. It is one thing to speculate from known facts to plausible dramatisations (that is what the best historical fiction and period dramas do) and it is another to fabricate an alternative reality where anything goes, every lie and falsehood is endorsed and allowed to run berserk. Not once did I feel the young Elizabeth was scared for her life, aware of the proximity of violent death (as the real Elizabeth was), forced to grow wise beyond her years. Nor did her scholarly charisma come out. She was accomplished at a very early age. Instead we saw a woman very obviously in her late 20s-early 30s (they should have found an actress that looked like the one who played Jane Grey) behaving like a silly girl without a care in the world.

I'm glad you liked it. The list was meant to be only series, no movies.
I didn't include any Jane Austen ones because I haven't watched any. Only movie so far. And I don't like to recommend something until I've watched it.
Let me know your favorite Jane Austen tv series, and I'll include them in the second part of the list once I get a chance to watch them.

Thank you for the list. I have to admit that the majority of period dramas I grew up watching would be considered old. But, on the subject of Jane Austen there are a couple of adaptations that came out in 1995 that are truly worth the watch. Pride and Prejudice (1995 TV series) and Persuasion (1995 movie).

Some of us watch historic dramas because they are dramatized history--not for the romance; so I'm always checking the accuracy, and a lot of these just are not. The Crown is a bit of a mix--enjoyable, but check facts after each episode. Sanditon is pretty awful, not accurate to the book or to the period.
There are three mystery series that are accurate down to the last detail of their period, and those are the Poirot episodes with David Suchet; the Miss Marple stories with Joan Hickson; and the Sherlock Holmes dramas with Jeremy Brett.

I know that a lot of these shows are not accurate, but I don't mind really. I enjoy both types of shows: the ones closer to history and the ones that are just for fun.
Perhaps you'll find more accurate shows in my new list of Australian dramas:

It's a shame that only few of these are G or PG rated. There are a number of Jane Austen movies not mentioned, besides the unfinished Sanditon Jane Eyre, Miss Potter, Thoroughly Modern Millie etc, that could have got a mention.

But I did include Sanditon (the show).
