Thank you for posting this video. A couple of years ago, I took apart my pen and was unable to get the fine needle part of a 000 pen back into the cartridge, but using your method of jiggling I was able to get it back in.
Great vid, Richard. I have a set of Rapidograph ink pens from my drafting days, and use them to ink my sketches. I got away from them for the last little while, focusing more on the Micron ink pens and other multiliners. But the Rapidograph are workhorses. Thanks to your vid, I'm going to give them a long overdue cleaning and get back to inking with these pens!
Yup. I've been using Microns for a while because of the convenience, and got a similar but refillable Copic Multiliner, a few days ago. The issue I have with both pens is that when the ink starts running lower, the edges of the nib become dry, so I can't skate along the edges of lines when I'm building them. I had to break out my old Rapidographs and I'm glad I did. Great tools.
I just bought a set of these Rapidographs for drawing. I had a vintage Koh-I-Nor Rapidograph from Germany that I used a long time ago that I no longer have. I really liked it for drawing but it was old and I don't think I had the right ink so it was always a hit or miss proposition using them to draw with. It may have been a really fine tip also. So, I decided to get a four-pen set of this new style Rapidograph with 30,35,50, and 60 size nibs. Your video is a really good demo of how to break down these modern USA Rapidograph pens for cleaning. And I also heard others recommend the Ultradraw ink. I imagine draftsmen would want the faster drying ink to keep from smearing and ruining a large technical drawing but artists would want a slower drying ink that won't tend to dry out in the pen. Again great video for the Rapidograph newbies!
I love the fun sing-songy 'like that' and 'like that', made me laugh. Also, you gave a very thorough demonstration. I've watched others that do not take it all the way down to the needle/pin. I pulled mine out of the dust. Very dry. I'm adding ammonia to the water to help with the hard crust. Thank you.
You made this super easy, thank you for the video. I just bought my rapidograph pens last week and am looking forward to using them... flows like butter compared to my micron pens
Thank you for this awesome video! I was recommended to try these pens for painting tattoo flash because I have never been able to line with a nib (5 1/2) and not put all my weight into it essentially blowing all the lines out. These are fragile and make me want to be gentler. Thanks for showing how to clean and fill these!
I've been routinely dealing with issues with the .18 nibs (the pink color coated ones in the video) and I'm going to get in the habit of soaking them when they're not in use. That's good advice, though I have recently gotten a lot of the .18 points that didn't work when I first bought them. It is a royal pain. I can generally get anything larger than that to work even if I haven't used it in a very long time.
I have a 7 piece set that a friend gave me and they're AAALLLL dried up sadly. I'm hoping I can use this advice to clean them. They haven't been used in almost 20 years.
Mine are over 30 years old! Pulled them out and didn't clean them before storing them! Slowly but surely, I almost have the .50 working. I used these for drafting, and now want to use for Pen and Wash! Getting Ultradraw ink!
Thank you so much Richard , but I wanna see the pink and blue one with the cap off, I have a set I’m scared to touch, I have not used them and I want too. Mine are quite old , but I really have never used one. Thanks again for your share😊
Are these the same pens you inked those Wildcats V2 pages? I bought some Rapidograph pens myself and wonder how long they'll last but of course my use will be much inferior compared to those Travis Charest pages.
I bought a Winsor & Newton series 7 I have the 0 and 2 brand new, for some reason I’m nervous about use them. I use other brush that are not as good. I also use copic pens
Michael Telles the zero is very thin. I've not had a lot of good luck with a good tip on a 0. That small is almost unnecessary because a good 2 will get just as fine of a line. And as you saw with my 3 even it can go really really thin too. I'll do some brush inking videos this week.
I haven’t used it yet, but I just went to Michaels and bought Higgins black India as they didn’t have the regular refills there. On the back it says it works for technical pens. Would it suffice? I’ve never used it before.
i just cleaned my .25 (beige) by taking out the Pin thing. Its working fine. Its the size smaller than that he's talking about the .18 (pink) that may bend. The last two sizes.
Can you please tell me if it is possible to get another refilable ink cartridge? When I took apart my pen, I have no clue what I did with it!!?? I don't see them for sale anywhere. Thank you!
Don't the inks contain shellac? Which will dry hard and you'll never get the shellac coating off the nib simply by running it under water. Or maybe I'm thinking of another brand.
a micron or pigma pen is a marker. (meaning it has a felt tip) these are metal tips (hence the metal needle). I will show in a new video some hacks for microns though. Hope that helps!
Rich, I have a set of Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens, Slim Pack, probably from the 80'S, that I found at work years ago. It's a set of 7. The ink is in dried out, definitely need s some cleaning. Want to give it to someone who will use it. It's a freebie. Email me if you are interested.
Hi Brenda I use a variety of Rapidograph pens in my artwork. I like a good challenge and would like to try and get them going if you are still wanting to send them off. Thank you Tommy B
Aditya Santhanam Hi. I’m afraid that you can’t use fountain pen or India inks. You should use technical pen inks and preferably Rapidograph brand inks.
I know you made this video 6 years ago but here we are today in 2024 and this video is still helping more and more people thank you for this!!!
Great vid, thanks..good vibes
Great video! Your instructions are so clear and easy to follow. Thanks

My Dad gave me an old set Koh i Noor H.R.S. (from the 70's I'm guessing) thanks to your video I know what to do now, thank you!

My wife bought me a set and I'm afraid to use them. They were over a $100 dollars and I'm scared I''ll bend the nibs or whatnot.
Thanks so much! I had a .25 and a .30 that I filled, but couldn’t get them to work. Your tip to tap them on the table did the trick!

These pens have been around for over half a century and yet they remain a pain in the ass to fill.
Fun video. Thanks for the info!

Try bathing the tips in an ultrasonic cleaner

And you do the hokiepokie and turn around. Kewl tutorial with a ditty and a smile. 😂❤
Thanks, Rich!
thanks for the help, very useful video, I appreciate it

Ultradraw on order. Much thanks for the tip (heh, 00 through 5).
Do you have any tutorials on using brushes with ink?
So helpful thank you!
Great information. Thanks.
THANK YOU UA-cam for Playback Speed !! I almost always do x1.5.
I haven’t used it yet, but I just went to Michaels and bought Higgins black India as they didn’t have the regular refills there. On the back it says it works for technical pens. Would it suffice? I’ve never used it before.
I just bought my first Rapigograph pen and I cannot get the ink well off the pen tip. It should just come right off but what is the trick?
Great video.. too bad I already destroyed my blue/ teal one before watching this but oh well now I know.. thank you
I bought the .26 which is really narrow so I wont take out the little pin thing, thanks for the help
i just cleaned my .25 (beige) by taking out the Pin thing. Its working fine. Its the size smaller than that he's talking about the .18 (pink) that may bend. The last two sizes.
@@JOSEPH-vs2gc i use a ear bulb cleaner works as good as the actual brand cleaner,

Is the Koh-I-Noor .13 thinner then the Rotring Rapidograph .13? I suspect it would be.

What's the best thing to use to clean these? I have pen cleaner but it doesn't seem to do the trick.
Can you put Higgins fountain pen ink into this?
I have put back the needle back of a .13mm twice. 😎
Thank you for that info !
Took my set out after about 30 years, to be used by my daughter.
Me too!
I bought the .30mm and broke it the same day, ended up replacing it with a .50mm nib
What's the difference with microns ?
a micron or pigma pen is a marker. (meaning it has a felt tip) these are metal tips (hence the metal needle). I will show in a new video some hacks for microns though. Hope that helps!
Richard Friend thanks a lot !

@@tommybailey2037 Hi Tommy, sorry but I already promised the pens to someone else. I'll keep you in mind if this falls through.
Next time tell us what kinds of pens are impossible to put the needle back into BEFORE u take the needle out
Ugh, wish I'd watch the video BEFORE taking the pink one apart. Oh well...lesson learned.
Confused...but thanks for confusing me!
Can I use fountain pen ink?
Aditya Santhanam Hi. I’m afraid that you can’t use fountain pen or India inks. You should use technical pen inks and preferably Rapidograph brand inks.
