  • Here is a vintage Tru-Point Pencil Pointer (made in Michigan) and a refill sharpening band that my friend Gary gave me. These devices were common sights on drafting tables where engineers, architects, designers and other professionals worked in the days before computers when everything was done by hand. These work best with lead holders, so to try it out I used a Koh-I-Noor Versatil lead holder to see if the device would still put a point on the lead.

    I found it at a garage sale in Rochester, MI. I paid just a couple of bucks for it. Glad you were able to figure it out and do a review.

      Thank you so much, Gary!! I wasn't sure where you came across this pointer, but it's a real piece of history! I appreciate you passing this along to me!!

    Wow! That really is a cool gift, and a neat device. I've never had a good look at one of those, so thanks for the tour and demonstration.

      You're welcome, MAMO! I had not seen one of these in years so it was a great gift and fun to revisit!

    Elward Mfg became the Trupoint Products Co. Tru Point eventually had a web page and was still selling these in the mid-2000s. The exact same sharpener was sold under many different art and drafting supply brands, but they all seem to have been made by Tru Point. There were standard and variable taper models, and then there was the Model D which had a "quick change" abrasive refill.

      Thanks hillside21 for sharing your knowledge! I didn't know there were so many versions of this Tru Point sharpener.

    What an awesome find. I like the finest point I can get on a pen or pencil. Very cool there and all of it made on the USA 🇺🇸

      Hi Chad - yes, this was a fun vintage item to come across. It does put a very fine point on the pencil. Thanks!

    hello from Brazil
    you must unscrew the back of the mechanical pencil, it has a built-in sharpener.

    There are plastic versions of this still made that are either clamped to a table or handheld. I think, maybe, I saw a new metal version at an art store about 10 years ago.

      Thanks for letting me know. I didn't think they still made these.

      I don't think they make the sandpaper rings anymore. These devices are largely obsolete. Thanks!

    The perfect pencil for you, would be a Kaweco Special (black Al. version) loaded with Uni Mitsubishi 2mm leads.or a 0.7mm version, loaded with Pentel Ain Stein 2B leads. It's the best writer among all 2mm pencils and the Japanese graphite, is also the best for writing,...just imagine the outcome!!

      Kevin would most likely stick with the first one. 0.7mm lead is too thin for him.

      Hi Greekveteran! Thank you for the recommendations!! I'll bet those Uni 2mm leads would perform beautifully!

      That's true! I prefer the thicker leads! Thanks!

    I was a manual draftsman in the mid 80s and had all the equipment. Enter Auto-Cad and I said good bye to the joy of mechanical drawing. I still have my pointer, but I'm not getting a conical point. It's beveled, like a chisel. Do you or anyone else know how this could be fixed? Thanks for the content!

      @AlwaysAnalog  9 місяців тому

      Hi Ford - sorry I don't know how to fix your pointer, perhaps there is an issue with the internal mechanism. Thanks!

      Sounds like the lead is not rotating, and only one side is being exposed to the sanding surface. That or the sanding belt is moving alongside the pencil when you rotate it.

    When was something like this made the 30s or 40s

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  8 місяців тому

      Hi Dylan - they made these into the 1970's and 80's - as long as people were still designing by hand. Once things became dominated by computer generated design, there was no need for these. Thanks!

    Is the lead sturdy? Or does it push back when enough pressure is applied

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  10 місяців тому

      The lead is very secure - it does not push back. Thanks!

    I have a heavy vintage one

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  7 місяців тому +1

      They made these heavy so they wouldn't move when you spun the pencil around to sharpen the point. Thanks!
