- Huell takes a special tour of Forrest Ackerman's home, which is a shrine to and museum of sci-fi and horror memorabilia. The self-described inventor of the term "sci-fi," Dr. Ackula (as he liked to be called), boasted over 300,000 items from genre films, books and TV shows. He was also a literary agent, and editor of numerous fanzines. Best of all, he opened his house to the public. (Note: Ackerman passed away in 2008 and the museum is no longer operational.)

He was a wonderful, generous man. I went to visit him twice when I lived in Hollywood and he was always funny, corny and open hearted. He would open his home every Saturday to anyone who wanted to visit. All you had to do was show up at 11 am and ring the bell. And he would answer just like he does at the beginning of this video. And if you knew, you could answer him in the same creepy way. As a SCI-FI fan, I feel very lucky to have met him.
I visited the Ackermansion back in 1998 and it's a memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I started reading FM in the late 60s and tried to never miss an issue. My picture was posted in the "Wanted More Readers Like" section in the mid 70s. I made sure to take it with me so I could get Forry to autograph that issue, and get my picture taken of me holding the magazine with Forry.It was unbelievable how he would let people wander through his home unsupervised. I shutter to think how many people took advantage of his generosity and walked off with some of his prized collection.I remember being in his Dracula room and saw where he had left his wallet sitting on his coffin coffee table. There were several other people walking around and I was concerned that somebody might decided they might want to leave with more than memories. I quickly picked it up and headed downstairs to where he was sitting. Once I returned it to him he said he was wondering where he misplaced it. He pulled out a hundred and tried to get me to take it. I refused and told him that the tour was way more valuable to me than any amount of money.The world lost a great and very generous man when Forry passed.

Billionaires, probably, like Spielberg and Stephen King, not to mention mayor Bradley, they all could’ve easily created a museum for, in their eyes, chump change. I mean Forry even said he offered everything for “FREE.” Let’s allow this word to sink in for everybody……”FREEEEE.”
So the outcome leads to one important question: what the hell happened? This is a subject I see discussed in a book or documentary like those old cable shows: E: True Hollywood Stories, or Behind The Music
Forrest Ackerman was one of the nicest people I had ever had the pleasure to meet. I was lucky enough to have my picture featured in the "Wanted More Readers Like" section of Famous Monsters Of Filmland. I visited his home only once but it was an experience I will never forget. It's very sad he isn't with us anymore, but we are very lucky to have had him to share his collection and stories with all of us who loved him.

This is a place I wanted to visit when I was younger, but never did, But this tour is the next best thing.
Its a tragedy that the collection couldn't be kept together, some of that stuff deserves to be in the Smithsonian, him talking about it going to going to a museum etc..at the end is sad
I agree. Not too long ago on eBay I discovered an authentic piece of cotton used inside one of the brontosaurus models used in King Kong. It was in a small bag attached to a picture. How sick!! People are cutting Forry’s stuff-film history memorabilia and slapping on a huge price tag. I can’t recall the price this gentleman asked, but it exceeded $2,000.

Yet there are respectable sellers who sell some of Forry’s stuff on a sci-fi lover to sci-fi lover basis. They were friends of Forry’s. I’m friends with a gentleman who wrote for Ackerman’s Famous Monsters during the 70’s. Through him I’ve heard funny, soul touching stories and received a few authentic Forry items: autographs, lobby cards taken from the negatives once owned by Forry, even 2 small paintings-1 is Chaney’s Laugh Clown Laugh.
I hope more people with a genuine love for horror and sci-fi fill the world, caring for these items rather than butchering them for money.

thank you for keeping this old video posted. Huell is so nice as was Forry. Was able to tour the Ackermansion with my 2 young sons. Such a fantastic venue and so gracious that he opened his home to us all.
Some of this stuff are genuine priceless artifacts to all of humanity. The first edition signed Frankenstein for example.
Also, priceless items that geek me out,
1. Bela Lugosi’s Dracula Ring from Abbot & Costello meet Dracula
2. The last War of the Worlds machine
3. Ray Harryhausen’s models from Earth vs The Flying Saucers
4. All the original 1933 King Kong items….lastly
5. Lone Chaney’s makeup kit, the hat and teeth from London After Midnight, along with autographs (Price, Lugosi, Karloff, Lee, etc.,) and the first edition of Dracula with Bram Stoker’s name, along with others who played Dracula:)

I knew "Uncle Forry" very well. I have many wonderful memories of visiting the Ackermansion.
This is one of the most awe-inspiring, and one of the most depressing half hours a Monster Kid could watch. All of this existed...and now, all of this is lost to the mists of time and the disinterest of those who should have known better. Rest In Peace, Forrest, and ...

Having had the pleasure of befriending Forrest J. Ackerman (Uncle Forry to his friends) and celebrating his 90th birthday, I can say that he was a wonderful man with an enormous knowledge about the entertainment business that he was only too happy to share, an enormous wealth of stories about his experiences in that business, a collection of memorabilia that is probably unrivaled the world over...and a heart bigger than all of that. He was greatly loved and is sorely missed.

I heard about that many years back. It was all BS. Forry had been dead almost 10 yrs by then. Why wait that long? Bunch of greedy and ignorant people behind that me too garbage.
I absolutely love this! Two of my favorite personalities together.
I remember when I first saw this I geeked tf out seeing huell & Mr Ackerman in the same episode taking a trip through Ackermans pad.
I deeply regret missing a chance to visit the mansion. However I own a Frankenstein profile oil portrait from the collection that I purchased on Ebay while Mr. Ackerman was still living and they were beginning to sell it off. I was thrilled to see it in this video in his Karloff-Lugosi room near the end of the piece. RIP Forrest Ackerman!
Simply amazing. How I wish I was aware of this when he was alive. What a great guy, and his jokes are so corny it is actually charming.
Whenever I’m depressed I seek out all of Ack’s bad puns. Believe it or not, soon I’m smiling again. I know I’m a nerd bc of this haha 😂
Met Forry at a convention in San Jose back in 1979. He pushed along a grocery shopping cart and was filling his up his basket with collectibles. Got his autograph, too. Nice man.
Huell did not get that "toyYoda". That was good.

This was wonderful. As a native Angeleno I can't believe I had never heard about this gentleman. I would have loved to visit his home museum. So sad that no one took him up on his offer to keep his collection intact. What a huge missed opportunity.

No Mention of Famous Monsters of Filmland, The Magazine which Forrest Ackerman Published for a few Decades, and which put him on the Map in the Science Fiction Field. This Publication was read by people like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Rick Baker, Joe Dante, Don Glut, and Stan Winston, All of whom became famous filmmakers, Makeup Artists, Writers, and Special Effects Men in the Movie and Television Industry. Without Famous Monsters a lot of kids who loved Science Fiction and Horror films would have no place to go.

Incredible collection and really sorry to learn that arrangements were never made to have much of this memorabilia placed in a museum for posterity after Mr. Ackerman's passing......
Spielberg or Lucas could have paid for the protection of this museum of wonder out of petty cash, but they let it get away. Hollywood just doesn't care.
They're fake and unworthy people.
It would be a shame if the collection were broken up. Mr. Ackerman obviously spent a great deal of time and money to build it
@R W That place could have been The House of Pies? Location is on Vermont and Franklin.
His will left it to 18 beneficiaries, though by the time of his passing a lot had already been sold to help pay for his medical bills. When it comes to a museum like the Smithsonian though they'd probably want to verify that the items were indeed what Ackerman claimed they were

So I googled him. Looks like recently there are quite a lot of accusations against him, but apparently long running stories about it. Wish they made his stuff a museum rather than sell it all.

Ackerman had people living in his house for years along with 50,000 visitors. I wonder if any stole stuff?

Sadly, it was auctioned off. If only some of those Hollywood success stories that grew up reading his magazine and were inspired by him had saved it and put it in a museum.
+ROB'S MOVIE COLLECTION so right it would be one of most successful museum as well ,what a shame. You would think spealberg or Scorsese who are billionaires could just flip a coin and make that happen what posers

I'm sure Mr. Howser is a fine fellow, but it would have been nice to have had Mr. Ackerman interviewed by someone who actually knew the slightest thing about sci-fi, fantasy and horror films.

That's the draw of Howser. He doesn't know anything about anytime. If you watch his shows to learn something or see a poignant interview, you'll be watching unsatisfied for a long time.
That’s pointless. The interviewer,like most people don’t have the slightest idea about sci-fi, fantasy and horror films of the past. We would all be asking the same questions as Mr. Howser.That’s why Mr. Ackerman is there to explain it all.
OPINION: I *believe* a fan was almost warned he was going to get sued by Profiles in History for questioning authenticity & bringing up certain ring differences. Someone ended up paying $46,000.00 for... Forry's ring! Very interesting if we pay attention here at 2:08 it's very telling. Transcript below:(

It was the Dracula ring Bela wore in Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, so it was a real Bela Lugosi Dracula ring.

There is a forum where people claim that his props weren't authentic. Quirky character, for sure! Maybe he just needed a lot of attention. I wonder if most of his stuff were authentic, whether he would have been that generous in opening his home to strangers?
Huell did seem like a genuinely nice, warm hearted good guy....his accent was kind of annoyingly corny tho!!!!
