  • In this video I take a great handheld microphone body and try 3 different eBay capsules to replace the existing busted capsule. Which sub $10 capsule sounds best to you? And would you use any of them on a podcast or video?

    I really liked capsule B. My issue with a lot of dynamics is my voice tends to be bassier, combine that with most dynamics adding to base, plus a proximity effect and my audio can sound muddy.. that brighter sound of capsule B that improves clarity i think would work quite well for me.. but the capsule in the mic I have now sounds pretty good, i've been considering a completely DIY mic build, and I may just use capsule B if I cannot find anything better.. or at least as a starting point to swap out later

    I think the correct term is "soldermite"
    I actually liked Capsule B best. Need to listen to the video a few times to figure out why. Maybe I'll change my mind, wouldn't be the first time.
    Really good video on an obscure part of microphones. I could see buying some busted old mics and putting new capsules in instead of buying new Behringers, also surprised Capsule C seems to beat cheapie handheld dynamics easily in handling noise at least, which I presume is a feature of the body rather than the capsule. I remember you've done at least one old, very cool-looking Shure mic that had a really not-great sound and if you could make it better with a cheap capsule transplant...
    This could be a series: Just review all the different cheap replacement capsules available on the same mic body. That would be a really cool thing that nobody else is doing.

    GOOD VIDEO. I vote for Cartridge C which sounds more natural, balanced, and realistic to my ears. Cartridge A is second place, which is smooth, but lacks higher frequency clarity and definition, over emphasizing bass frequencies. Cartridge B is unusable, harsh, sibilant and "grainy" as you describe. I appreciate you may prefer the thicker sound of Cartridge A, while others may prefer the more natural end-to-end balance of Cartridge C. Cartridge B surely finishes last and can easily join the futzed M-Audio cartridge in the can. Good, low cost repair of the M-Audio handle. A worthy, useful bargain result. Not being critical, but here is an idea you might consider: While you tested and compared each cartridge under similar conditions, I think you might change your vote and prefer Cartridge C if you tested each cartridge at its optimal angle and distance, which varies from cartridge to cartridge. That would minimize issues with plosives, and maximize the performance of each cartridge compared to the others. Consider, for example, the Shure SM57 and SM58 each use the same cartridge - but with different handles, head baskets (grills) and distances from diaphragm to grill surface, making the same basic cartridge sound different in each handle, so it matters how the cartridge is deployed and constructed - especially the distance between source and cartridge. So, while I appreciate you tested each cartridge under similar conditions, you MIGHT reach a different conclusion if you ALSO tested and compared them at their respective optimal distances. Just a serving suggestion, not a criticism. TJ

      Good stuff! Low and behold....I prefer cartridge C now....as ive slowly come around to the more defined and clear tone rather than dark, wooly, or flat sounding mics.

    I’m gonna say it, C kinda sounds like an SM7b with some top end bacon sizzle sizzle pop pop. B was the best tho, throw some more rigid big hole foam and boom, $120 mic territory guaranteed.

  • @Crapgame619

    Which just goes to show some of these capsules sound better than some top notch microphones. That said... most microphones are made in China anyway including the SM7B! I’ve done the same as you many times and ended up with a reasonable sounding mic 🎤 it’s the name on the microphone that costs the money 💰 Most mic’s are way overpriced considering what their made of. If you look on most high end mics you’ll read “Made in China” so the cheep capsules can’t be that bad.

      I agree... I have a slight lost of high pitch hearing as do many people.. so the highs actually help us .. capsule A that he picked was the worst of the 3....B wasn't bad.. also keep in mind that he's listening with good quality headphones .... I'm listening through the air.. which absorbs a lot of the highs and mids...

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 роки тому

      @@jerryf3375 Mhm i have a perfect hearing (for a nearly 40-year old) with a good bit of hearing well above 17KHz. And all of the headphones and speakers that i use are really smooth and have excellent top end extension. What has he got, ATH-M50? Despicable headphones in my opinion, basically no extension past 12KHz, but a sharp resonance at around 10 KHz to stand in for the lost top-end. Unfortunately this combination of traits is very common in headphones with 50-52mm membranes, i will personally choose 40mm ones every time. I suspect they lead to avoidance, where someone will avoid a mic which excites the resonance region, understandable that they sound "wrong" to them, for no fault of the source. While people with this signature headphone trait still need to be catered to, i think a good overall response from the microphone takes precendence, and then you can doctor it a little with EQ or better yet de-esser to make the sound more palatable just in that little region.
