Well... we were arguing and I said “And what would you say if I said I wanted to get married right now?” to prove a point that we were not “that” in love/close and he said “I’d say let’s do it!” And suddenly the conversation went from “I don’t think we like each other that much” to “okay, let’s commit our lives to each other” - and here we are, 13 years later still proving that maybe we really do like each other “that” much 😂
if you like slow burn in television: watch 'Anne with an E'! that show is the definition of slow burn and it's soooooo good! like every interaction that the main couple has makes your heart beat like crazy
I love Anne with an E, I think they did a good job with Anne and Gilbert. The slow burn romance in the Anne of Green Gables book series is also great. And I love their enemies to rivals to friends to lovers relationship.
I love anne with an e too!!! While I enjoy the slow burn with the main character, I’m quite invested with and adore another particular couple in the series (non-spoilery hint: two French-speaking characters ;) )
I'm a hurt/comfort sucker in whatever form it comes. My favorite trope is probably when one character went through major trauma and has nowhere to go and the other one saves them and slowly gets them better but it turns out this person has some deep issues too and it's not a one-way saving they help each other to heal and support each other and all that. COUNT ME IN!
These tropes made me realize why I love the movie The Proposal so much. Fake marriage, hate to love, have to share a bed, accidentally fall on each other naked, confess his love. Lol Agree with all of these tropes you mentioned. 😍
My favorite tropes are 1- getting to know someone by text or phone or mail BEFORE you meet in person 2 - when the first touch is HUGE. Like Kaz Brekker letting Inej touch him. Also love the 2nd chance!
Gentle but witty and playful bickering between lovers. Even better when it borders on (if not straight up being) flirting, and mixed with some sweet moments between the two... YES !!! LOVE LOVE LOVE that one! Probably my favorite trope. One of my top ones at least. I'm all for that. I don't read a lot of romance books. But I love a good romance in any genre and media. And this kind of relationship/interaction gets me. Every. Single.Time.
Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa comes to mind when you talk about second chance romances!! There was so much I loved about that first book and the angst was unreal. Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. If you love a man with secrets, the bargainer is who you’re looking for! It’s a fantasy where she’s a siren private eye and he’s a powerful fae who strikes deals with shady people so he can collect favors and secrets from them. They reconnect to solve a mystery of why fae women are being abducted. It’s honestly a treasure of a book.
I know I'm like 8 months late, but the way you talk about this in a way you can't contain or explain all the feels is exactly how I am with angsty romances! my family never understands, but his is exactly how i am.
Mariana Zapata writes some good contemporary slow burns with the hate to friends to love trope. Her books are also usually very light on the sex scenes.
I also love the romance tropes that happen over a pen-pal sort of relationship. "Just breathe" and "you say it first" were two of my favorite new YA romance reads that show this kind of slow burn friendship to romance.😍 I'd love some recs for this trope
As a French girl I am so happy that you mention this series which is absolutely fantastic ! I recommand it a 100% and indeed the romance in the book is everything hihi !! ^^
Joséphine Lucas we English speaking suckers are still waiting for the third book! Starting to understand what it’s like for the rest of the world waiting for English language books to be translated.
@@Amyduckie As en example, here in France we had to wait one year for each Acotar books to be translated, trying to avoid spoilers in a real challenge haha
I love all of these!!! 💜 My absolute favorite type of enemies to lovers is: enemies to reluctant friends to best friends to just pals having sex to "I would kill anyone for you but no I'm absolutely not in love with you" to lovers 😍
The Lightbringer series has a very complicated sort of second chance situation that is one of the most original and complex versions of this trope I have ever read, it’s delightful
I feel like you would love A Winter’s Promise. It hits your marks: forced marriage, enemies to friends to maybe lovers in the future, slowest burn romance ever! Book 3 isn’t out yet but I have so much hope for Ophelia and Thorn.
I love the forbidden love trope! Anytime something is forbidden and can't/shouldn't happen, I'm IN! I was reading American royals and I love the forbidden romance in that book😍😍it has so much of it.
SAM! The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary. Two people share a flat. One is there during the day and one is there during the night. They leave notes for each other (they haven't met). It's absolutely great. The new Christina Lauren book, Twice in a Blue Moon, is second chance. It comes out this week. Also their Love and Other Words book was second chance romance. The Simple Wild is a great hate to love. AND IT HAS SINGLE BED.
Oh my God this is me EXACTLY😍 I'm not exaggerating when I say I agree with EVERY SINGLE line you said in this video🤣. Both about why certain tropes you like are adorable, and why the tropes you dislike are annoying and unrealistic. When it comes to romance, you're the number 1 on my list to check out for recommendations!
Yasssss to super slow hate to love! My favorite process would be hate-begrudging respect-understanding-respect-friends-feels start to bloom-love, that's my kind of story, where developing the romantic feelings helps the characters become better people 😍 A great enemies to friends to lovers story, with a lot of humor, that I would recommend & that might not be well known in the book community would be A Lovely Complex - both anime & manga 😊
NEW SUBSCRIBER!!! We have the same preferences in romance tropes! You're someone I can relate to very much 🥺😂 Here's a movie recommendation: Leap Year (easily my fave rom-com) ✔enemies to friends to lovers (the banter was hilarious) ✔ forced to share a bed together & end up unintentionally cuddling when they wake up lol (cuz they were travelling and the only option was to stay in a place with only one bed) ✔forced to pretend to be married (cuz of the reason above) ✔drunken confession ✔second chance romance (pulled apart by outside forces, but chose each other anyway) ✔iconic proposal This movie just has most of what you've stated, I couldn't NOT recommend it.
I think I squealed a little when you mentioned North & South ( and the proposal scene *_*) which is, in my opinion, criminally underrated (both the book and the period drama).
Yes, I became obsessed with that series. His smugness and condescension towards her was thrilling because we knew the moment he laid eyes on her he was smitten and he was just fighting that the whole time. When a character fights temptation and attraction, it hits all my buttons.
That 10 Things scene! Yes!!!🤗 and the whole yelling confession 😂😂😂 looovvee this trope too! my favourite’s well its not from a book but that scene in gilmore girls when rory and dean fought and she’s all “i love you, you idiot!” 😭
When you said enemies to friends to lover my mind immediately went to the TV show The 100 (Bellarke 😍 ) it defines this trope the best. You should definitely give it a chance it's worth it ,just the beginning is kinda slow but after then it's amazing.
I agree with all of these!!! I'm a huge fan of enemies to co workers to friends to lovers. To be honest any ship that takes a while to get together and that faces many obstacles along the way (with tons of angst of course) I'm a fan of. They're my weakness!!
Oh yay. I think youd enjoy the romance in my book. They dont even kiss until the last quarter of the book and it only implies they're dating in the epilogue. It doesnt knock you over the head with labeling it :)
I relate to all those tropes ! They are my favorites !! We all know them, we see them coming but .... it's just sooo good !! It's not a second chance romance and I'm feeling like I am kind of harrassing you with this (sorry!) but if you like a good long slow burn please read Kate Daniels ! I was so tired of characters being together already in the first book, a few days after they met ! But in this series there is a lot of the tropes you love : a slow burn during several books, a LOT of banter ( there is a lot of quotes I want to drop but I don't want to spoil it if you decide to read it ) and a lot of denial of their feelings ( mostly and Kate's part ). And as a said before the rest of the story is just amazing too : the other characters, the world building, the big major villain...
I do believe that the ‘friends’ middle also makes the transition from hate to love better, I mean I’m definitely finding it easier as a writer because I look at the hate to love transition and think...”this doesn’t make sense” haha
the accidental physical contact thing you were talking about always reminds me of that scene from the movie the proposal, which is also good for the fake dating trope that is on a fixed time limit.
My favourite sff romance trope is when the final battle is about to begin and they have thier confession of love. Also being surrounded by enemies and fighting back-to-back. The Praetorian Guard fight scene in The Last Jedi had me sent
For slow burn you might like Mariana Zapata’s books. The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai is a good second chance romance. My favorite tropes are mutual pining and a grump paired with a sunshiney human🌻
Until this video, I never realized that I loved all these things. Even when I pick a rom com movie, it’s always the best when it’s predictable and tropey. My favourite part of romances in books, movies, and shows, is the sparks and chemistry before the relationship. Especially when they’re fighting it. I love the tension and the butterflies. That’s it. Don’t need the relationship portrayed after, just lead into it and we’ll be good :)
Oh! Also! They start having casual sex and slowly fall in love but there some circumstances and/or bad past experiences so they are reluctant to pursue something more. Also both believe that it's not serious for the other person and they are the only one in love and drama and they break up but get together eventually of course! Mostly I see it in fanfiction or in movies like Friends with Benefits or Love and Other Drugs but I think there are books like that too.
Omg when you talked about second chance romance I immediately thought of a movie I watched called 'This Is Where I Leave You'. As a movie it's a little average, bUT there's a small story with Tina Fey's character and her high school sweetheart that just broke my heartttt
Huh, I’ve never thought of my interest in slow burn like you articulated and that’s exactly how I feel. I’m so glad I watched this and heard you explain that
Literally none of these surprised me, but it's still such a treasure to see your reactions just talking about them. I recently finished Well Met, which is an enemies to lovers with a Renaissance Faire backdrop, but the relationship transition was too abrupt for me.
Loved this video!! If you haven’t seen it, The Wedding Date with Debra Messing is one of my favorite fake dating movies! Has a good amount of the tropes you mentioned 😆
Literally this is my romance taste to a T. But with second chance and enemies to friends to lovers add in a childhood friendship trope and I’m so there.
There was a real life second chance romance I saw clip of on the news today. Where this couple were high school sweethearts and went to prom together and now 60 years later they are back together and getting married.
Small acts of kindness. In the Enemies to Friends to Lovers trope, I love it when Person A does a small act of kindness for Person B. And Person B is surprised but silently pleased. Maybe the small act of kindness makes Person B consider Person A from a different perspective. Person B must not let on that they are a little touched but there are tiny, glimmering hints that they are. Best example I can think of is when Joe Fox gives Kathleen Kelly daisies in "You've Got Mail" when she's sick. I live for small acts of kindness within the larger enemies to lovers trope!
The book that I decided to post on Wattpad this year has that trope of enemies to reluctant friends to best friends to lovers and it takes 80,000 words to get there. Now that you mention it I’m like shit I shouldn’t have posted it on Wattpad and attempted to query! But I agree, plus the slow development of the relationship is absolutely vital until it hurts and you literally want to die if they don’t get together. There is a sort of genuineness that comes from the proper development of feelings and I think is often overlooked in romance for the sake of a quick romp. I think authors really need to learn to distinguish whether they are writing within the vein of erotica versus the vein of romance. The greatest romances of literature are slow burn for example Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, and North and South. All of them have the gradual development of human emotions which give a longevity to the stories. Now, if we were to take a look as to why those stories stick with us is because us, as the reader, underwent a journey along with the characters.
I realised while watching this video that a lot of these tropes were in the movie Leap Year - if you haven't seen it, then I highly recommend it! Also one my favourite tropes is when one person shuts the other person by suddenly kissing them; whether it's because their talking to much or they're arguing or anything like that - ugh I love it 😩
My favorite half night stand by Christina lauren was soooooo good. You'd probably enjoy Josh and Hazels Guide to Not Dating by C.L. also. And you want slow burn... Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams was just like ahhhhhh find each other already! You're perfect together!
There is only one bed is a trope that butters my croissant every time. (Bonus points if it is also really cold so they just have to cuddle for body warmth (forced proximity!)
What I love is a lot of these were started by Austen when you break it down. I mean anything similar to pride and prejudice and persuasion is my thing.
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund! It's a Persuasion retelling with some sci-fi/dystopian elements. I enjoyed it especially for the slow burn romance!
*Wolfsong and Ravensong by TJ Klune* are both really angsty MM slow burns with Wolfsong also being friends to lovers and Ravensong also being second chance. And they are BEAUTIFULLY written and ar the first half of a four-book plot and character-driven 'Green Creek' series with book 3 out tomorrow. I will pimp these books out forever as they are also very strong on found family and belonging, and has a wonderful ensemble of secondary characters. I don't read many male authors but TJ Klune is a master of his craft and writes MM romance equally well in a number of different sub-genres including comedy and fantasy. Wolfsong, the first book, and Ox it's MC totally own my heart. I read widely, but Romance is probably top of my list volume-wise and some of my (many!) favorite romance tropes are long term friends to lovers where it gets awkward between them at some point before they realize why...baby daddies (aka single fathers!), kids and pets being a big part of the narrative especially in comedic stories and one-night stand turns into more. I also love stories about people in the dance world. And I love me some angst. TFS :)
I am currently rewatching ncis:la and I am partly rewatching for the Kensi/Deeks romance. It isn't enemies to lovers, but it is a slow burn friends to lovers. They have that friendly bickering going on and later on there is an episode where they have to go undercover as a married couple so you have the fake relationship aspect. There is also at one point the trope where one of them, Deeks, is half asleep after an angsty couple of episodes and he says "it's a love story" while Kensi is there watching movies with him. They are so cute together. Also I think they finally got married in the most recent season, I am not sure since I haven't seen the past 2-3 seasons. Kensi and Deeks relationship seems to have a lot of the trope you mentioned.
Second-chance Romance! For that, I recommend The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It's a fantasy of manners (sort of like Jane Austen---more so like Persuasion---but with a little magic). The Second-Chance Romance comes into play in the second half of the book though, and the reason the relationship didn't work out the first time is awful but it is never excused, and the gradual regaining of trust gives me *grabs chest* FEELINGS. I won't say anymore so as not to give too many spoilers, but the characters are so richly drawn (even the 'bad' ones) and I just adore it.
I just finished Serpent and Dove and it had some slow burn hate to love stuff. I would have preferred it to last longer but I think they covered larger chunks of time without making it apparent so it worked for me.
For the second chance romance: It isn't out yet but Alexa Donne's the Stars We Steal is a Persuasion retelling in space. I think it comes out in early 2020. So that might be for you.
Me watching this and nodding along: wow, we are thirsty monsters.
this whole video had me laughing so hard, i relate so bad! "oh no, there's ONLY ONE BED!"
"omg, they were roommates"-trope never gets old for me 😂
The fighting confession of love is basically how my husband and I ended up married... 13 years ago ❤️
Danielle Walton context?..backstory?...
Well... we were arguing and I said “And what would you say if I said I wanted to get married right now?” to prove a point that we were not “that” in love/close and he said “I’d say let’s do it!” And suddenly the conversation went from “I don’t think we like each other that much” to “okay, let’s commit our lives to each other” - and here we are, 13 years later still proving that maybe we really do like each other “that” much 😂
Always cracks me up how passionately you talk about this. Slow burn, pining and angst yes please 💃🏾
if you like slow burn in television:
watch 'Anne with an E'! that show is the definition of slow burn and it's soooooo good! like every interaction that the main couple has makes your heart beat like crazy
Yes
I know! I need recs for this!
can you give any examples of books like this (that you have enjoyed?) - sounds interesting!
These tropes made me realize why I love the movie The Proposal so much. Fake marriage, hate to love, have to share a bed, accidentally fall on each other naked, confess his love. Lol
Agree with all of these tropes you mentioned. 😍
The naked thing happened in The Proposal, my favorite romcom of all time
One of the best movies EVER
My favorite tropes are
1- getting to know someone by text or phone or mail BEFORE you meet in person
2 - when the first touch is HUGE. Like Kaz Brekker letting Inej touch him.
Also love the 2nd chance!
You have to see then the movie called: Leap Year
It has all of that... I LOVE IT!
Belenau Yes! I was thinking of that movie with the shared bed thing! I love it so much!
Belenau yes! I was thinking of this too.
Plus Matthew Goode 😍
Omg I just love the way you talk😂 "that couple that posts too much lovey stuff on fb but you know they have issues"😂😂🙌
As someone who’s described as demisexual, your justification for slow burn enemies to lovers trope speaks to me on a deeper level
Totally relate with losing interest 80% of the time they finally end up together. Also the angsty banter part HAHAHA
Before i even clicked on the video i knew that having to sleep in the same bed trope would be brought up.. a classic.. true art
Jennifer Lawrence screaming and being angry at Bradley Cooper’s character in Silver Lining Playbook .... forever amazing
I got excited with you during this whole video, totally agree with everything!! Looking forward to all the recommendations in the comment section :)
:)
Yeeeesss. That's one of the best slow burns I've read!! Book three is coming and we have BARELY gotten anything but I love it !
Mariana Zapata writes some good contemporary slow burns with the hate to friends to love trope. Her books are also usually very light on the sex scenes.
ok I really need to read some zapata because everyone is recommending her!

If you like angsty slow burn romance, you should start the french fantasy series A winter's promise
Audrey Vaire SECONDING THIS. The second book was EVERYTHING.
Joséphine Lucas though Serpent & Dove reminded me of what swears I knew and taught me a couple more. 😂
I literally agreed with every single word out of your mouth! Especially the thing about losing interest in couples after they get together.
Is this the ancient Rome inspired one?
No, it’s by Brent Weeks, it’s an adult fantasy with a really unique magic system
love is divine 💯
The entire first half of the video I felt like you were describing The Unhoneymooners and I’m here for it 👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️
lol I basically was
Read Serpent and Dove! It’s the most satisfying slow burn, loathing to love books ever
I feel like you would love A Winter’s Promise. It hits your marks: forced marriage, enemies to friends to maybe lovers in the future, slowest burn romance ever! Book 3 isn’t out yet but I have so much hope for Ophelia and Thorn.

When you mentioned North & South...😭😭😍😍
its the best and everyone needs to know
Thoughts on Tomes if they’ve never seen/heard of it then it’s a life unfulfilled.
NEW SUBSCRIBER!!! We have the same preferences in romance tropes! You're someone I can relate to very much 🥺😂
Here's a movie recommendation: Leap Year (easily my fave rom-com)
✔enemies to friends to lovers (the banter was hilarious)
✔ forced to share a bed together & end up unintentionally cuddling when they wake up lol (cuz they were travelling and the only option was to stay in a place with only one bed)
✔forced to pretend to be married (cuz of the reason above)
✔drunken confession
✔second chance romance (pulled apart by outside forces, but chose each other anyway)
✔iconic proposal
This movie just has most of what you've stated, I couldn't NOT recommend it.
Enimes-friends-lovers is From lukov with love by Mariana Zappta. Hands down best contemporary e2f2l and slowest burn.
I think I squealed a little when you mentioned North & South ( and the proposal scene *_*) which is, in my opinion, criminally underrated (both the book and the period drama).
HONESTLY why does no one talk about it>!>
Yes, I became obsessed with that series. His smugness and condescension towards her was thrilling because we knew the moment he laid eyes on her he was smitten and he was just fighting that the whole time. When a character fights temptation and attraction, it hits all my buttons.

UGH I LOVE IT
When you said enemies to friends to lover my mind immediately went to the TV show The 100 (Bellarke 😍 ) it defines this trope the best. You should definitely give it a chance it's worth it ,just the beginning is kinda slow but after then it's amazing.
I agree I love them and really want them to get together next season because next season is the last one
But they aren't canon in the show yet, right?
(Just, you know, in real life!!!! 💐🎂💐. That chemistry is real.)
SAM!!! It’s like you cracked open my heart & spilled out all the romance tropes I love 😭 ❤️❤️❤️
A lot of these reminded me of The Proposal, with Sandra Bullock!
your eye makeup looks so beautiful in this *______*
I agree with all of these!!! I'm a huge fan of enemies to co workers to friends to lovers. To be honest any ship that takes a while to get together and that faces many obstacles along the way (with tons of angst of course) I'm a fan of. They're my weakness!!
Today is my b day and Sam post a video about romance tropes?!Im blessed!
I always loved 10 things i hate about and it is basically a Nesta x Cassian modern au
I need the books you have read with all these tropes 😫 I need a angsty, low burn romance!
I linked a video in the cards that I did on my favorite slow burns!
I LOVE wilderness/survival romance. I don’t want it to be too heavy. But I love that

I think you would really enjoy From Lukov with love, by Mariana Zapata. It is a slowburn enemies to friends to lovers
So much of what you said made me think of Iseult and Aeduan from Susan dennard's witchlands 💜
“The Broken Lands” Trilogy by T.A. White has the slow burn and the enemies to friends to lovers tropes! The world is quiet interesting too.
My favourite sff romance trope is when the final battle is about to begin and they have thier confession of love.
Also being surrounded by enemies and fighting back-to-back. The Praetorian Guard fight scene in The Last Jedi had me sent
OMG DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ABOUT THAT SCENE
For slow burn you might like Mariana Zapata’s books.
The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai is a good second chance romance.
My favorite tropes are mutual pining and a grump paired with a sunshiney human🌻
mutual pining of a grump and sunshine human (with layers from both) ARE THE BEST!
Love And Other Words is a wonderful second chance romance. It was a huge surprise for me since im not a fan of Christina Lauren, but I loved it.
omg the changing scene in the Unhoneymooners was so funny! I was dying of laughter. 😂
Watching this and agreeing with so many of these I'm really realizing how influential Spike/Buffy was on all my shipping tastes.
I'm inspired to put all of these tropes in one story 😅❤
Oh!
First, your nails looked amazing in this video. To the rest of the video....yessssssss to all of these!
Omg when you talked about second chance romance I immediately thought of a movie I watched called 'This Is Where I Leave You'. As a movie it's a little average, bUT there's a small story with Tina Fey's character and her high school sweetheart that just broke my heartttt
Enemies-Friends-Lovers.
Damen/Laurent- Captive Prince. Alex/Henry- Red, White & Royal Blue. Nina/Matthias- Six of Crows. Nona/Arabella-Red Sister.
Cartoons: Goliath/Elisa- Gargoyles. Lotor/Allura- Voltron: Legendary Defender. Sakura/Sharon- Cardcaptors anime.
10 things I hate about you for the win. I love when she barfs on him, I die laughing every time
its such a great movie omg
This entire video spoke to me on such a deep level, you have a truly galaxy brain taste in romance tropes
:))))
Your excitement throughout this
The book that I decided to post on Wattpad this year has that trope of enemies to reluctant friends to best friends to lovers and it takes 80,000 words to get there.
2nd chance rec: LOVE.AND.OTHER.WORDS. my all-time fave Christina Lauren
I mean anything similar to pride and prejudice and persuasion is my thing.
absolutely
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund! It's a Persuasion retelling with some sci-fi/dystopian elements. I enjoyed it especially for the slow burn romance!
Also, I live for these videos... I would love to also see movie and book recommendations with this tropes!
Have not watched the video yet, but I just want to say that the thumbnail is absolutely precious. 😍
I would love to see a list of your favourite romance films :) You mentioned a few, but I'm sure you know plenty more :D
I could do that :)
TFS :)
Only one bed is my JAM.
There is a great Korean drama that is "second chance romance". It's called 12 Years Promise, it's available on Netflix.
You need to read Mariana Zapata’s books! Specifically Kulti and The Wall of Winnipeg - slow burn, enemies-friends-lovers, bed sharing, etc
I'm reading The Wall of Winnipeg right now
Thoughts on Tomes yay! Hope you like it!
Serpent and Dove! I keep recommending it. Lol. I love the banter.
Me: Nah I'm not that into romance tropes
~cue basically every single one you bring up~
Me, quietly: .....fuck
North and South is one of my favourite novels ever. Everything in it is so good. Pride and Prejudice is too good too. omg. gotta read a romance.
Girl u gotta read that series bcz i think its made fo u to read! Every Romance Trope u love is in this series!
From Lukov with love by Mariana Zapata is hate-best friends-lovers. And hyper slow burn.
Please if anyone likes these tropes WATCH LEAP YEAR IT'S SUCH AN UNDERRATED MOVIE
When you described the bed sharing/physical contact, I thought of the Movie "Leap Year" which is a great movie.
I just finished Serpent and Dove and it had some slow burn hate to love stuff. I would have preferred it to last longer but I think they covered larger chunks of time without making it apparent so it worked for me.
North and South love ❤
For the second chance romance: It isn't out yet but Alexa Donne's the Stars We Steal is a Persuasion retelling in space. I think it comes out in early 2020. So that might be for you.
