Finally, I decided to record a full cover of the album "La Valse des Monstres" completely from beginning to end. It was quite a difficult but fun challenge! The idea to record this came to me a month ago, when I remembered that I had already perfectly recorded “Le Banquet” and a couple of other tracks. All tracks are learned by ear. Some of the tracks have never been covered on UA-cam.
@@julieng5046 Thank you! In the recording of the album, Yann used a “Mundia Beilei” toy pianos that could later be seen at early concerts, but it is very rare and I don’t think that many copies have survived in good condition, I recorded it on two different toy pianos, this is a “Melissa & Doug 24 keys” for the right hand “American Music Pro 30 keys” for the left (i think it's copies of Schoenhut toy pianos), in fact there are a lot of nuances here, because many such instruments are now made by various unknown brands, and their sound may change despite the fact that they may look the same, so I don’t know which available brands would be the best, I chose them randomly. But I strongly recommend purchasing an instrument with a large range, for example 30 keys, with these range you can play all of Yann's tracks, especially if you have a pair of them! Also some toy pianos can be very loud, so I put a cloth between the hammers and rods to make the sound more gentle. Thanks again and good luck in finding your instrument! :)
I've been looking for a while at Yann's toy piano brand, but I couldn't find any useful information, thank you very much I've never heard of the brand "Mundia Beilei"! I still have a doubt, though: according to your original channel, in order to play "Comptine d'été n.17 for toy piano", the highest note must be a G5, which is not available on his toy piano, since it stops at E5 (it has 24 keys). I know Yann used to have 2 toy pianos, but they're both from the same brand, so there's no chance he could get that higher note... how did he do that? I think you could do it because your Melissa & Doug (which I guess it's on your right hand, as you showed in your beautiful "Les retrouvailles" cover) actually CAN play one or more octave higher, am I right? I can't understand how Yann did it... at that time he didn't have a "Michelsonne" with 37 keys, as he now has in its studio in Eskal
@@mariospada00 Yes, you are right, I used the Melissa & Doug toy piano to play highest notes, and I was also a little confused when I first realized this, even more, on the recording we can also hear F5 which is not on Mundia's keyboard too. So I think that Yann had some kind of third toy piano at this moment that didn’t show up anywhere, for example a Michelsonne with 25 keys like the ones which he used on 2006 tour for Esther, although they have completely different timbres! Unfortunately, none of us know how many specific instruments Yann had at that time, we can only guess, so I think it would be logical to have a third toy piano to play it, ahah! Thank you for the praise and your question, I like it when someone notices such things
what? those are all covers? incredible! i can't hear the slightest difference. without side by side comparison anyway. how did you find instruments that sound so similar? and also great recording and mixing! where did you learn that? ?
Thanks you! I never learned this anywhere, everything came with practice through trial and error when I bought microphones. Sometimes I watched tutorials on UA-cam but they seemed difficult (no one tells how to mix a lot of acoustic instruments), so I usually use an equalizer, reverb, stereo panning and very rarely compression except for the one built into daw, next I follow my intuition! And I didn’t specifically look for similar sound instruments, they initially sounded not bad, ahah! The only thing was that I had to look for a long time for a realistic harpsichord library because some time ago there wasn’t a single one that would be sound great. Thanks again!
La Valse des Monstres is one of my favourite albums from Yann. Thank you for these beautiful covers as always :)
