  • Whether you are a brand-new walker or have been walking with us for years, everyone can benefit from quick and easy fundraising tips to boost their Walk4ALZ team!
The Walk4ALZ ensures all of the services Alzheimer’s San Diego provides are 100% free, including dozens of support groups. The support group is needed and there are people out there that care and can help individuals and family members.
    Naomi Rogers-Bea Story =
She wakes up at 6:15 AM every morning and walks 5.6 miles around Chollas Lake with her walking group. It’s a daily routine that brings her joy and ensures she’s prioritizing her physical - and spiritual - well-being.
Health is essential to Ms. Bea. She has relatives and friends who are living with or caring for someone with dementia. Over the years, she has witnessed the impact of this disease firsthand. She knows how tough of a journey it can be, especially for people who spend years needing or providing care.
Alzheimer’s will touch all of us in our lifetime, one way or another. A family member, a friend, a neighbor…the disease won’t go away without all of our help. I walk because I CAN! But it goes back over 20 years to when my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the late ’90s. She died in 2003. Then I lost my Aunt Carlene and Uncle Chuck to the disease in 2019 and 2021. Now I walk beside my close friend, Gloria, who is navigating her ‘new’ life now that her husband is drifting down the path of forgetting.”
    Annie Clark-Durkin Story =
Annie is a sucker for a good cause. As Walk4ALZ team captain of Someone Special, Annie always jumps at the chance to share her story and explain why she supports Alzheimer’s in San Diego.
“Initially I began walking because my mother Jackie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1997,” Annie explains. “She was such a gentle woman and it broke our family’s hearts that she had to travel the path of forgetting.”
But Jackie’s path wasn’t the most straightforward. She had initially been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment, which does not always turn into dementia. However, while Annie accepted that it could (and did) become Alzheimer’s, her dad had a harder time dealing with what was happening to the love of his life.
It's amazing how many people who are touched by Alzheimer's in one way or another are not aware of the services provided by Alzheimer's San Diego. Walk4ALZ is a great way to educate the community and provide valuable services. I would highly recommend and encourage anyone interested in walking to just do it!"
    Tiffany Maycumber Story =
Tiffany first heard of our organization through her friend, Jennifer, when she was working at SDG&E many years ago. After Tiffany’s mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in the summer of 2016, it led her to “take a more active role with volunteering, raising funds for research to find a cure, and towards educating our community with the services Alzheimer’s San Diego provides.” That same year, she also started Team Phamily in her mother’s honor and has walked ever since.
As only one of 16 children in her family, Tiffany took turns with her siblings to support their mother while she was living with dementia. She wants other families to have access to a wider support network and notes that “it’s amazing how many people who are touched by Alzheimer’s in one way or another are not aware of the services provided
When you go to the Balboa Park walk, and see the number of people that are there - all going through the same thing - it’s an amazing feeling San Diego has done so much in terms of giving to us and helping us. I walk because I’m going to honor my mother every single year one way or another,” he continues. “It’s not going to help my mom, but maybe it will help someone else. That’s what keeps me going.
