Kyler Hann incorrect you lift the felt to fill a zippo lighter. I don’t care if you have 1000 of them you are doing it wrong. But I will explain why you are wrong. The felt is lifted so you don’t overfill the lighter. While the felt is lifted and you are putting lighter fluid directly on the cotton when the cotton gets completely saturated that is when you stop filling. You let the felt down and when you turn the lighter over to put the insert back in the case the dryer felt absorbs some fluid out of the cotton and it keeps the lighter from leaking in your pocket.

Bonjour à vous de la ville de Saint-Pétersbourg(Russie) Je m'excuse pour certaines erreurs que j'ai pu commettre. I lift the felt pad and fill the lighter until the other part of the pad which is fixed by the flint screw gets wet by the fluid. As soon as I see this I stop otherwise the lighter will be overfilled and you will have to wash your hands 😂 with this amount of fluid I can easily use the lighter for a week. I just fill it every Monday morning. No need to do that more often.

Great video again! Really like how you do all this without expensive specialist machines. 💪👍 Small generic safety note regarding the drill press though, vinyl or nitrile gloves are fine, but don't even use safety gloves while using a drill. The drill bit could easily catch the glove and tear it apart, taking the operator's hand along with it. Same with other fast spinning equipment with cloth-snatching capabilities like lathes, mills etc.
A beautiful restoration of an icon of America, yes I know it speaks volumes about the US but its one of the last great craftsmanship we have, I say well done sir
I'm dumbfounded with all "Lift to fill" comments, what is it ?, until clicked on your timeline, bwahahahaha, its done for more dramatic scene (excuses).
Vuzereus Azureus your supposed to lift the pad to pour the lighter fluid into all the cotton stuffing. The pad says LIFT TO FILL 3 times on it. Yet he still poured lighter fluid on the pad.
I'm at the point with these videos where I'm watching them like a sports match. For example. "He's gonna bring out the Rust Remover. RUST REMOVER! RUST REMOVER! YESSSS!"
@@exofluent It's less of a rust remover as it is able to get in between rusted bits so you can pry them loose. It will prevent rust if you treat metal with it though. Now DETCO is genuine penetrating oil, we used it on the farm equipment all the time.

Seeing how severe the damage was and yet still able to be restored shows the quality of zippos!
You always do such incredible work. In this instance, I think it would’ve been better had you used a smaller, softer brass brush to remove some of that corrosion rather than that large, stiff-bristled brass brush. I think the smaller, softer-bristled brush would not have left the scratches that you experienced from that larger brush.
I found a Zippo lighter in the dirt after tearing down our old barn that my dad lost from his shirt pocket probably 30 years ago. Now I know how to go about bringing it back to working order
Ty, haven't I seen you do nickel replating? It's fairly cheap and simple, and this lighter could have been easily replated in nickel just like new (if the copper was still intact). Tip for next time! :)
as a zippo collector I can tell you the copper plating is there because zippos are usually nickle plated, and they would do a 2 stage plating process, however, marlboro zippos were usdually made of lighters that had flaws after the copper plating thus got painted, usually black so the decal or emblem would stand out, also, youre going to have some fueling issues with that because the rivet you used for the spring doesnt hold the wick tight enough, meaning its not going to seal properly and leak, and the wadding needs to be put in a certain way with the wick snaking through it to fully absorb the fluid.
Zippo was started from the 1930's- 1950's, and I wanna say that was a popular time for copper when it was a bit more expensive than it is now. I hope this brings insight to your parts question, but please don't quote me I could be wrong. I love the videos, they're all very satisfying 💖☺️
*Rolls a joint* Got a light, bruvneor? Also, which politician do I have to bribe for them to allow MC-51 to be allowed stateside? That stuff looks legit! And as far as copper goes, I anticipate that metal increasing in value due to its germ resistant properties...

Hello mr. Tysy, beautiful job on lighter. I will give you a tip that I have learned. When peaning small rivets, use a nail set ( for counter sinking finishing nails) the point is cupped.
Restoring the inside was pretty unecessary. Just put in a new "inner" from Zippo. It should be identical. The valueable thing is the case. And the hole on the bottom of the felt is not for a spare lint, it's to poke the refill bottle inside.
From the Zippo website: 1. Remove the inside unit from the case. 2. Turn it over and lift the felt pad to reveal the packing material in the fuel chamber. 3.Slowly saturate the packing material with lighter fluid. Stop filling when the fluid reaches the top of the packing, or begins to change color. In a video there they actually say you can keep an extra flint under the felt pad (not in the hole).
Many comments about lifting the felt pad to fill the lighter. FYI The felt is there to keep lighter fluid in the batting and not letting it evaporate in the bottom of the case. Also the wick is more effective when you wind it back and forth in a serpentine fashion intermixed with each of the balls of batting as you press them in the case. This insures the wick is in contact with fluid filled batting and not sitting on top of all the batting..
I can just smell the lighter fluid, it takes me back to my dad using his lighter to light his cigarettes. Thanks for the memory. As usual, beautiful work.
I worked for Marlboros Ad Agency in that time and I owned quite a lot of those different Zippos and I can assure you that these were Chrome plated, but I liked it when they aged and the Brass began to shine through at the edges

I looks like copper because the solution that you use for rust may be attacking the zinc in the brass
🤔🤷♂️
No, copper is plated onto brass so the original final coating of nickel would adhere.
