I have watched all the vidieos i can find with this girl playing, ijust love the banjo in the hands of someone that can play like katie dose, KNOCK E'M DEAD BABY!!!!!!! GREAT BAND TOO,
very well done.,... enjoyed this very much and though my ten year old girl has never heard this music, she loved it too and wants to learn to play it. This type of music joins the elders to the young and there is nothing bad about that. Keep up the good work all and would love to hear you do more together.
Love the Mountain music!!! when I was a child, my family visited my grandmother in a tiny town in PA and everyone would come over to see us and bring their fiddle and play the old time mountain music, gospel, bluegrass. We sang Life is Like a Mountain Railroad, and other songs like Just over the River...When we all get to Heaven, and lots of old time hymns. Townsend Festival brings back all those old songs. I miss my loved ones...most are all gone to Heaven...
@TennesseeShelties So do I. Western NC roots. We still sit around & sing when I go to my Dad's for visits. Nice to be able to do that. You named some really good songs. I'm sure you miss the ones that have gone on before you; I know I miss my mother. Fortunately I still have my almost-93 year old dad & 7 brothers & sisters!
It's just the nature of bluegrass pickers! I refer you to Adam Steffy and the Boxcars, all very professional pickers....their expressions never change. These guys sounded great together, I loved it!
@dmmc1043 I agree. I wish I had stuck with it. Grew up in Western NC listening to bluegrass but got away from it after my teenage years and just came back to it about five years ago.
man I love all thier music, I can"t get enough of this kind of stuff, where dose these people live I know they don"t all live in townsend,I would like to find out more about townsend, and possibly relocate, I live in missouri( independence area) but i would like to find out more about this town and the players, they are so good, I would like to see them in person,I love watching katie like everyone else it seems. keep it up yu are all wonderful.
YES Daves5wire you're the only one. Yrs ago I had the misfortune to join a group who had one player who whined constantly that everyone else was "outta timing & tune" & set up a drum machine at deafening volume.
@fukmesillytwice Yeah, this year the spring festival is May 6-7 & the fall festival is Sept 23-24. You can google "Townsend, TN" and look at the Townsend Chamber of Commerce site then under "events". I'm sure you'd enjoy it!
To all the people out there dissin' Katie for not smilin': My family LOVES to play (has for over 8 generations), we don't smile much while we're playing. We are focused on the music and the others we are playin' with. What's so great about smiling anyway? Humans are the only species to bare their teeth in a non-agressive/submissive display (aside from some domesticated canids who have learned to 'smile' by receiving a reward of some kind)
@gingermc2 or she's too cool for that kind of music / ready to move on to more complex music. I always wondered what banjo players do when they get bored with bluegrass ;-)
@MrLongtimegone ,to comment "The girl will quit playing if she has to stay WITH..."oh come on, why do people have to be so mean? she is concentrating~! if you look she turns to someone and gives a big smile. Many good musicians do not smile as they feel the music and instrument. They were very good musicians and not all music is for all...this world would be so much better if people would learn to appreciate good music like this with heart and soul..but if not then at least learn to be nice.
(wakes up and starts day on youtube. clicks on a video that reads) "the girl from west vagina", no that's not right [wipes eyes]. reads again: the girl from west virgin. nope that's not it either [puts glasses on]. "the girl from west virginia." oh! well that makes sense. xP
Don't be so shy! Use your voice as an added instrument. Learn to harmonize and sing leads. Do this while playing and it will make you an even stronger player. You're a beautiful young lady with a great talent. Use your vocals to make it even better!
@gingermc2 I'm a teenager and I don't do that. :P If she's a little uninterested, just try bringing in a little bit of newer stuff. Don't abandon tradition. Respect it, and create from it anew. At least, that's my goal when I make music. That could just be how she is. XD
looks like pops forced his kids to learn the instruments except for the one son with the coveralls red shirt and hat. the girl and boy looked embarrassed to be there even though they played some good music.
They are good young musicians, BUT, they look bored out of their skulls! Music is meant to be fun. Music is enjoyable. They look like they want to go home.
Why does she look so arsey and absent-minded while playing banjo? Thanks anyway, Gingermic2, for upping such cool vdo. But the only shame is I can't see her picking closely, and it's frustrating!
I wouldn't say she's arsey and absent minded. I'd say perhaps you though are judgemental and rude. I play banjo the same way, who knows, maybe she's bored, needs more of a challenge, maybe this is what she always does is play play play. Its easy for her and same old same old.
Dave, when I was first learning to play the banjo a very gold friend of mine (multiple national banjo champion winner) told me "here is my advice to you, the banjo can one of two things; almost in tune and way the hell out of tune". As well as all the other advice Randal Morton has given me over the years, it is unvariably true.
Yeah I could sit and listen to these guys all day,,,very good..
I have watched all the vidieos i can find with this girl playing, ijust love the banjo in the hands of someone that can play like katie dose, KNOCK E'M DEAD BABY!!!!!!! GREAT BAND TOO,
Love it....... still listening to it years later
Katie ROCKS that bango. peace-out!

WEST VIRGINIA
Your banjo always sounds great to me! I wish I could play half as good as you, Katie!
These kids are so awesome, I hope they keep making music for many years to come!
Alright!great little tune.Nice playing.
wonderful , enjoyed it very much . Reminds me of when we lived in Elkins , WV . 2001 - 2005

Katie Norton Rocks!
@dmmc1043 I agree. I wish I had stuck with it. Grew up in Western NC listening to bluegrass but got away from it after my teenage years and just came back to it about five years ago.
Bluegrass is the way to go!!!! I wish I had started earlier!

@TruegrassBoy Yes it is. I had never heard this until I went up to Townsend one year. Later realized I had it on a CD by Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

YES Daves5wire you're the only one. Yrs ago I had the misfortune to join a group who had one player who whined constantly that everyone else was "outta timing & tune" & set up a drum machine at deafening volume.
I don't know who these people are but they got a good sound hope they are still around.
Did College in W.Va. in the1960s Cat eye shift will work today on the radio and warnings about dynamite caps on TV. Cool.

You're right. Pickers/singers come from all over the southeast and some from other states.
Great !
I think I'm in love
Whatever her expression may be, I think Katie is an amazing picker. :-)
Missing west virginia right now
@gingermc2 She reminds me of Elizabeth Fitch,a wonderful fiddle player. Both have the same demeanor.
I agree with you whole heartedly. Thanks for the comments, David.
Banjo sounds fine to me.
I banjo picker Evans not bill
@MrLongtimegone This is just a jam session where you move from group to group & play for awhile.

@RISINGfawnJUNCTION glad that you enjoyed it!
Yes it did.
oh be nice~! She gives a smile if you watch more closely instead of critisizing her. goodness!
@dmmc1043 Congratulations! Hang in there!
So cool smi|es ~**
What ever happened to Katie.. can't find her anymore.
@gingermc2 i'm working on it now and practicing really hard!
But still, you look so pretty and cool, sullen Katie, dear.
Was this recorded at George Washington Carver Park in Fayette County W.Va ?
@gingermc2 or she's too cool for that kind of music / ready to move on to more complex music. I always wondered what banjo players do when they get bored with bluegrass ;-)

Does anyone know what Katie is doing now? All videos seem to date from 2008.
where is Katie Nelson now?
I want to retire where they play banjo's
@JulixHartley - We play more bluegrass.
From the thumbnail, I thought *Katie* was "The Girl From West Virginia."
how long has katie been playing?
(wakes up and starts day on youtube. clicks on a video that reads) "the girl from west vagina", no that's not right [wipes eyes]. reads again: the girl from west virgin. nope that's not it either [puts glasses on]. "the girl from west virginia." oh! well that makes sense. xP
@1hardcorejack lol!
Yes it is. (lol!)
@seohayami1 I think that's just being a teenager. lol!
Don't be so shy! Use your voice as an added instrument. Learn to harmonize and sing leads. Do this while playing and it will make you an even stronger player. You're a beautiful young lady with a great talent. Use your vocals to make it even better!
she is just shy
Yes. Frank Zappa looked like that sometimes.
@RealEros1 . That's because they are all teenagers! lol! That would be uncool.
@gingermc2 I'm a teenager and I don't do that. :P If she's a little uninterested, just try bringing in a little bit of newer stuff. Don't abandon tradition. Respect it, and create from it anew. At least, that's my goal when I make music. That could just be how she is. XD
Anyone who plays an instrument would know it's concentration, especially when you are in a group.....for gods sake !!
Any of you smile nazis ever see Kenny Baker smile? Get a grip!
she is just shy got boys on the mind
looking for a hunk thats the best learing ground ,
e scruggs
nope....just a passion for music and a dedication, and perserverance for excellence. not the water...
my neighborhood park has homeless bums and illegal aliens. i wish we had uplifting music players remembering our traditions.
They all seem sad besides the oldest guy who is basiclly the only guy enjoying the whole thing.
I think it's stage fright.
Control issues from daddy.
I think thats just the way she looks. It seems like she is concentrating on the difficult pieces and semi-bored at the simpler tunes.
looks like pops forced his kids to learn the instruments except for the one son with the coveralls red shirt and hat. the girl and boy looked embarrassed to be there even though they played some good music.
They are good young musicians, BUT, they look bored out of their skulls! Music is meant to be fun. Music is enjoyable. They look like they want to go home.
this was right before she found out she has to marry sideburns because his family paid her father a few gallons of moonshine!
Why does she look so arsey and absent-minded while playing banjo?
Thanks anyway, Gingermic2, for upping such cool vdo.
But the only shame is I can't see her picking closely, and it's frustrating!

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THE BANJO IS OUTTA TUNE?
+Daves5wire Yes, you are
If you look a bit more carefully, you will notice that there are TWO banjos in this video. Which "THE BANJO" are you referring to?
Dave, when I was first learning to play the banjo a very gold friend of mine (multiple national banjo champion winner) told me "here is my advice to you, the banjo can one of two things; almost in tune and way the hell out of tune". As well as all the other advice Randal Morton has given me over the years, it is unvariably true.
"To which banjo are you referring" is proper grammar.
"invariably"
