Shimi is an old MTH song and this is a collaboration of different styles of music and also generations, but not vastly different attitudes. It works so well because the original version of Shimi had the slower more melodic parts sung by Nao, so substituting AG! sounds natural - Nao still gets to sing the final "soft bit". I'll leave it to MTH fans to give you more info on them. AG!'s name means "New School" and they are a song and dance group formed back in 2015 and are managed by Asobisystem and 88Rising. Mizyu (two hair bunches and air shamisen) had already worked with Asobisystem as a backup dancer with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Suzuka, Kanon and Rin joined her. Mizyu is three years older than the others and so was sometimes called the leader by journalists, and the others still look to her in some circumstances, but Suzuka's extrovert personality and strong voice make her the obvious front woman - she's the tallest and has the first solo in the video. Still AG! are always quick to say that they have no leader. They are all trained dancers and do all of the choreography themselves and work with various producers on the songs. Their artistic input sets them apart from most J-pop and K-pop idol type groups and their stage shows are performed with a unique joy and flair. They've all worked hard on their voices and now have excellent control with Suzuka taking the lead, Rin often rapping and Mizyu and Kanon doing more melodic parts. They just released a new album called "AG! Calling" and are on the second half of their first World Tour. AG!'s music is all over the place, but their style is always entertaining and fun and for an intro to them have a look for "Atarashi Gakko, Otona Blue, The First Take". Make sure you turn on the English subtitles.
I can't believe we got a reaction vid to this song. I love this band, but especially love Atarashii Gakko! They choreograph their own performances, and their music challenges a lot of the Japanese society norms. Their musical style is so unique. I was very surprised and very happy to see this collab!
AG (Atarashii Gakko) is very revolutionary in texts and eclectic in influences. The video is full of symbolics, if you pay attention, the first AG moment with Suzuka singing in back you can see two factory chimneys like a sacred entry of shinto shrine with shide papers. When AG call in the megaphone to bang heads, they do it on a torii gate... Aso. Both music and video is amazing
Maximum the Hormone is still the god father of genre bending metal in Japan, they've been around since 97', they're legendary while Paledusk is kinda new probably borrow some elements from MTH though.
MTH has been my jam a couple of decades now. I love their willingness to go outside the norm, and also to collaborate with such a meteoric rising group of a different genre in Atarashi Gakko is phenomenal.
Shimi was originally on MTH's 2007 album. In June 2024 they released Kisei Rush which is the CD mentioned at the end of the video. They recorded a new version of Shimi with Atarashi Gakko! for that CD. The version in the music video is slightly different from the CD version. Most notably Rin's rap wasn't included in the CD version. As for Atarashii Gakko!'s usual style, it's basically whatever they feel like doing. Pop, Jazz, Rock, Disco, Funk, classic Japanese influences. The closest they have come to metal before this is probably 青春を切り裂く波動 / SEISHUN WO KIRISAKU HADO. If you are not allergic to 80s pop, the best introduction to them is their performance of Otonablue on The First Take ua-cam.com/video/9MNPt-zlz-8/v-deo.htmlsi=6MP39umgy9Pkgcq2. Most of their music videos since 2021 have English subtitles.
This is such a good song, Atarashii Gakko! are a Japanese Idol group that are very popular, actually world famous and they are insane live. I'm surprised you guys didn't get any Hanabie. vibes off this since Hanabie. did start as a Maximum the Hormone cover band, I will add Hanabie. will be starting their headlining tour in Australia in just 2 weeks.
Time for an ATARASHII GAKKO! rabbit hole. I highly recommend listening to their song Otonablue but not the music video. The video they did with First Take performing Otonablue is great because it shows their personalities a lot and also showcases what the group is about. Their more popular song currently is Tokyo Calling which is basically an anthem about bringing change to Tokyo and that has brought in a lot of new fans. I would recommend Koi Geba which speaks on the inappropriate teacher student relationships that occur in Japan.
Well you mentioned handmaid's because they are inspired by maximum the hormone bro just fun fact maximum the hormone is the living legend in Japan bro especially for this genre 😂 MTH has been around longer than all of them
not sure about the Arsenal Kit but Maximum The Hormone are FUCKING AMAZING! Glad the OGs are giving these new and upcoming artists a chance on their older songs as a reimagination
You mentioned Mr. Bungle, Slipknot. Yes, *MTH* came out in the Alt. or Nu Metal era, a few have also commented sometimes they sounded (obviously inspired by) like SOAD. They clearly were inspired by the Nu Metal era. But they also mixed in some J-pop elements in their songs. That made them unique for me, and many of their fans. I wouldn't call myself a big fan of them, but I like some of their works. They also had a reality TV show interviewing some young Japanese musicians. *Tamu* of Nemophila & *Nyango Star* , both killer drummers met MTH in those TV shows.
Another song many people know MTH for is Zetsubuo Billy, which was the credit music for the anime Deathnote. Japanese metal band Nemophila did a cover of SHIMI song back in 2021 - ua-cam.com/video/R6Vw-QJp6YY/v-deo.html I don't know if you have heard these ladies (I couldn't trawl all the way back through your videos), but if you like Japanese female metal, check them out. This is their latest release since becoming a 4-piece: G.O.D - ua-cam.com/video/18Ddh0UFVN8/v-deo.html Nao-san (MTH drummer) is Murata Tamu's (Nemo drummer) biggest influence. You were right about Mr Bungle. MTH are the Mr Bungle & T.I.S.M of Japan.
I watch your reaction videos for bands the bands I like. I've never heard of this band, but I clicked to watch, just because of Johnny's shirt. COME ON YOU GOONERS!!!
Watching people react to one of my favorite highschool bands and recognizing Atarashii Gakko is a separate modern band that I love made me so happy. Language barrier be damned. Good music is good music. ❤ Props
I love MtH and my friend loves Atashii Gakko! and we've both been freaking out over this song since it released lmao

"Shimi" is Japanese for "stain".

AGREED!!!!
At this point AG! could record a choreo for a Slipknot song and it would be completely on brand.
