  • We are preparing our Laurel Propagation to supply our new Off Grid Property with enough plants to form a new hedge line around the house. We need around 300 plants to make this boundary and the prices of plants these days, we would prefer to make our own.
Follow this step by step guide to making a propagator and how to prepare the cuttings.
Ian & Julie are building their tiny homestead and soon to be starting the biggest project of their lives - a Passive House Container Home which will be totally off grid.

Hi, fascinated to see how your cuttings are doing. I am planning on doing something similar here in the UK, on a smaller scale. I have a couple of questions if you dont mind: What is the best time of year to take laurel cuttings, could I do some now? Did you grow propagate them in the shade?

This did great and not so great. We left them too long as we went away but I got about 30 decent plants out of them. We did these in July, when the green shoots start to grow on the main plants. We trimmed them off, powdered them and planted them. About to do the second bath this month.

Why cut them down so much can they not be rooted from a branch 🤔

The main reason is to fit as many as we can into the smallest space. I built the enclosure to be manageable and also from scrap timber I had. Our plan was to fit 200 clippings in it - we nearly made that number. We have a few larger ones growing in pots too.
