    "Time Lock" from ABC/Twentieth Television's "VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA" was, once again, a typical example of creator-producer, Irwin Allen, who had a habit of reusing his sets and props from all his previous TV productions, as well as using the full resources of 20th Century Fox to effect his creativity, as some of the props in "Time Lock" were originally used in his "TIME TUNNEL" TV series (especially the electronic control panel that was used in "THE TIME TUNNEL"s "The Kidnappers"), but John Crawford (1920-2010) was truly a wise and creative example of an everyman's actor, since Irwin Allen used Crawford in all of his TV productions (including "Dr. Chronos" in "LOST IN SPACE"s "The Time Merchant"), as well as in Allen's last TV series, "CODE RED" (1981-82) which was the producer's first for Columbia Pictures Television (shortly before the studio was sold to SONY in 1989) at The Burbank Lot with Warner Brothers in the 70s and mid 1980s. One of John Crawford's Irwin Allen works, was in the unaired CBS TV pilot, "THE MAN FROM THE 25TH CENTURY", which also co-starred James Darren and Ford Rainey, which was a ten minute TV pilot that 20th produced, but CBS passed on it! But, in all its glory, "VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA" was a remarkable science fiction TV series (the series had replaced "THE OUTER LIMITS" during it's Monday evening time slot in Fall 1964), and ran on Sunday nights following "THE FBI" and "THE ABC SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE"., before the series ended its run in 1968, to be replaced by Irwin Allen's "LAND OF THE GIANTS" (1968-1970)

      A leading TV columnist once wrote that there "wasn't ENOUGH Violence On TV," suggesting that ghastly injuries aren't so portrayed, which misleads the audience. "Matt Dillon's injuries in any one Gunsmoke episode should have forced his retirement. "

    My episode idea would have been the best ever - what if Aliens transport the Seaview into outer space it would then cruise in earth orbit same as it does underwater and we'd have Sharkey freaking out "We're in Outer Space! Orbiting the Earth!" and the climax would have Crane and Kowalski taking the flying sub to fly to the Alien space ship or space station to destroy it so they get transported back under the ocean where they belong. I wish I was around back then to pitch this idea to Irwin Allen he would have loved it seeing the Seaview in outer space.

      I see the character as the 29th century couch potato, unaware and uninterested in his physique or the outside world. He just collects his "toy soldiers" during his 5-hour work week, as prescribed by the Hobby Act. The rest of the week is spent plotting the takeover of his world, using the methods he learned from the members of his collection. I didn't appreciate the depth of Alpha's backstory as a kid. It's unusual for a Voyage to give this much info about a guest character and the world they come from. And that's my scholarly essay for today!

    I like this one. A madman collector from the future of military leader's from the past. A time portal. Great special effects of the Seaview. The ending lines of "He was the only human," by Nelson, Captain Crane say's, "If you can call a man like that human." Admiral Nelson just smirks. Then the Seaview lift's from the sea floor and it's on it's way.

    • @TooleManTV
      @TooleManTV  8 місяців тому +2

      I like it too. William Welch, who wrote "Time Lock," is in rare form here. The 5-hour work week and the Hobby Act are neat additions to the story that gives us an idea of what life is like in the 29th century. In the 1960's, when "Voyage" was being made, our vision of the future was a world of leisure where the mundane tasks of life would be performed by machines. That's why a "Hobby Act" was needed. The villain, "Alpha," has much more depth of character than most of the monsters and maniacs of Voyage who just wanted to take over the world for no apparent reason. And Nelson, ever the man of science, cracked Alpha's plot in time to save the future from his grip.
      Thanks for your comment and an opportunity to digress on this episode!
