I feel like one of the most underrated things about Lydia is that even when she thought she wasn't okay with it, she *never* let Elena know that. The only thing she ever showed Elena was love and support, because Elena feeling safe and happy came first. So many parents and family members could learn from that.

I remember when I came out as bi to my mom, I was so scared. My so called best female friend was in fact my gf and had been for years. All she said was "Yes. So? I already know. I've always known". It was in that moment I knew the TRUE love of a parent.

My immigrant Grandmother knew before my Mother. Even when my Mom used to talk about when I would get married someday, my Grandmother would tell her to leave me alone and let me live my life. She knew.
I would tell my grandmother first too. She was a firm Catholic for most of her life, and she raised her kids that way but as she got older she became so much more open-minded and she's probably one of the family members I admire most. At that age she just has a wisdom and maturity that our mothers' generation doesn't really have yet despite being raised in more liberal times, and I respect that so much.
Lmao grandma kept spoiling me with "boy stuff" (boy's underwear, clothes, toys, etc.) when I was growing up and my mom didn't like it. I was like 4 then. Grandma knew before I even did.

Something that I appreciate about Abuelita is that she doesn't alter her religious beliefs for the sake of Elena's sexuality. She doesn't agree with it or necessarily understand it, but she still loves Elena and refuses to treat her differently. That's how things SHOULD be. Even if you don't agree or understand something, you should ALWAYS respect those who decide to live their lives differently.

She is the best. Even though she is religious, Abuelita made the excuse that god made us in his image and the Pope said who am I to judge, so she overcame not being okay with it and has accepted her granddaughter, which is what a grandmother should always do. One of my friends from high school is also gay. When he told his dad, he had the same reaction "oooh when is the parade?" It's nice cause he was very scared to tell his dad, but I laughed cause all his dad cared about was going to a daggone gay pride parade.
I still re watch this scene over and over again. This is the one scene where I realized that something like that can and should happen in real life. If we are religious people, we should try to understand that being a part of the LGBTQ+ community is something that people shouldn't feel ashamed about or to feel trapped about not being able to their true self. Not sure if I got it correctly though. My point is that just because people are religious, it doesn't they have to turn their backs on people who are apart of the LGBTQ+ community.
