When I saw McDavid, of all people, being the net-front presence against the Leafs and taking away Martin Jones's vision, that was the moment I realized just how cohesive and bought-in this team is right now. Special time to be an Oilers fan.
That one play is a microcosm of what makes McDavid different from so many other stars. McDavid battles to occupy space in front of the goalie and take away his vision. Auston Matthews flinches away from a shot he could have blocked. I mean, Matthews may be the best pure scorer in the game today, but damn, that was a bad look...
He’s a very motivational player. Meaning he likes direction. Germans are very outspoken but they want to win. Now we have direction. It’s over for the league.
He lulls you. Players can't knock him off, he'll often circle the o-zone looking for some backhand sauce. He's not slow. asmuch as he has this methodical nature about his cycle game. You can hear the jaws music playing if you listen closely.
He has the laziest and most lackadaisical skating style of any player in the league right now, but is deceptively quick and his hockey IQ is high too so he's rarely out of position. He just glides into open ice and the puck finds him, and he's probably the best passer in the league, and can snipe with the best.
One of the major differences since the coaching change is that the Oilers aren't running around in their own end. They are structured and cohesive, rarely out of position. They have limited the high quality scoring chances and when they retrieve the puck in their own zone, there are multiple options to transition the other way. So enjoyable to watch.
Every Oiler is now confident enough to shoot whenever they get the change, and not only blast it at the net but shoot for the corners. and force goalies to make saves. And when you get enough shots, you get goals.
I am a lifelong Oiler fan living in Edmonton and I kind of must disagree with part of your comment. In no way are they confident enough to shoot whenever they get the chance, every game, they still hold on to the puck too long at very important times instead of shooting.
Definitely would like more Oilers content, but if I'm honest, I just watch anything you put out. Really love your positivity and breakdowns, league wide. I love learning more about other teams and such.

The amount of heat Nurse gets is insane to me. Like okay yes he makes more than he's worth, but no he's not bad, and no he wouldn't be the 4th best defenseman on any other team. He isn't a pretty player like Makar or he doesn't have the pedigree that someone like Hedman has, but there might not be a player closer to Alex Pietrangelo than Darnell Nurse. For people saying it's the worst contract in the league... I mean this league has Huberdeau, Gaudreau, and Seth Jones.
@@6BURG9 You know what I was only looking at the top end, but yeah Campbell is right near the top too. At least with Campbell though you can buy it out.
Evan Bouchard's been fantastic offensively too this season, his all-time high for points is 43 in 81 games played, but this season he already has 42 points in 41 games.
Oilers fans are NOT saying why would you touch this team. They are saying, this is it. This is the year to go all in. Trade anything and everything that isn't nailed down and get these boys some more help to get even better.
I love Warren Foegele. I loved him the minute he got here. Last night picking up two I was absolutely ecstatic, this guy is a top tier grinder. Goes to hard places and fights harder. Him, Derek Ryan and McLeod are rounding out are problems extremely well. Love to watch it
Oh don’t even get me started om that turd. Right now all we can do is celebrate and enjoy this. But still it won’t matter fully until playoffs for this team!
Defence is going to be Paul Coffey's baby; Foegele, Ryan, McLeod are finally stepping it up; I'm waiting for Kane and Nuge to start dropping gears, cross your fingers on that one; and then there's that wild card spectre of Holland bringing in someone before the deadline. It's just a matter of consistency from this point. But I'd love to see a deeper dive into the coaching staff; seems like there's good communication there from all ends. Something's finally meshing at a bedrock level.
I am a hawks fan, watching the hawks in the early 2010s was amazing but one thing that both the oilers and the 2010s hawks have, they are never down and out until the game is over. I think if the Oilers make the playoffs and win the cup, this will be a big reason why.
I love this video. Perfect editing and recap of a great game, and I also 100% appreciate the script and language -- very classy. Of course, it helps to have historic winning streaks by Oil on fire. Bring on the report about the D!
True. The move McD makes at 3:00 is such simple stickwork. Just watching the video, I KNOW I could do that stickwork and skating. Nothing tricky about the hands or the skates, or even speed. But the thing is, I wouldn't. I'd have no plan what to do, and I'd be playing catch up after getting the puck knocked off me into the corner. It's the classic "He makes it look easy." but you only really think it's easy if you're unaware of all the things you don't know. NHL players have insane hockey processors, and McD is top of the class. But then, they've also got the hands and feet when they need them, too.
I loved watching Foegele when he posted for the Canes. Not only is his playing very good. He has an infectious personality. Really miss him in Carolina. But Im still pulling for him. The kid truly has earned his way in hockey.
Deharnais has made huge improvements too. Would love to hear your thoughts on Knoblauch. Finally someone has got this team buying into playing defense. Has also made some interesting low key moves and line changes.
Nothing would be more satisfying than seeing Campbell return to form and lead this team into the playoffs. Think about it. The goalie who was written off with the team that was written off suddenly catching fire and going deep into may. Could sell that to Disney tmrw
I love the pass to McDavid in the slot analysis. But it's actually deeper than that. He's already analyzed the situation and position, and he's saying to himself "this is what I will do if he sends me the puck. This is what I'll do if he wraps, this is what I'll do if d goes back" etc. It's not a split second decision, it's processing 8 variable scenarios at one time.
In terms of the defensive play, I’d really love to hear your thoughts on Ekholm, Desharnais and Kulak rather than the other 3. Desharnais has finally reached a balance of offensive and defensive puck plays and pinches, which is a mile ahead of where he was last year. Elholm has added a new offensive layer to his game, and Kulak has tightened his overall defensive game up a bit.. big turn around for the bottom pair and whole backend unit under Coffey

Good Analysis and video. In this winning streak Oilers have truly deserved to win all but 1 game due to sheer hardwork. The defensive structure has definitely been the big change. The consistency has been the other. The team just keeps doing their thing regardless of score. I hope they can continue to play at this high level. Flames quietly being slept on as well. They are a rock throw away and have been playing good hockey lately too.
Wait for the compliment on the McDavid "processor" segment. If you played a lot of competitive hockey as a kid, your body "gets" these things on autopilot. This is THE major disadvantage I have in deeply understanding and analyzing the game as a female hockey fan: I have only the camera view, and no first-hand experience. All learning is intellectual. So I really loved and appreciated your segment on McD's "processor" and how scouts look for that kind of muscle memory skill.
Yes, the D-men you mentioned are all part of the turnaround story, but I also gotta give props to Vinnie Desharnais. No, he isn't ever going to be a Norris trophy candidate, but he has settled into his position mainly (I think) by accepting that he is who he is and just playing solid, route-one, by-the-book hockey. Last year, and then even more in the first weeks of this year, he seemed like a sure bet every game to make one or two absolutely boneheaded plays with the puck in his own end, but it's been quite a while since I've seen anything like, for one example, a lazy backhand no-look pass with his net empty that luckily hit the post.
Yes I'm happy for fogele too, the guy HAS worked his butt off and deserves this opportunity. He played extremely well in the playoffs for us too. 12!!? Yay
It’s one thing to know you’re going to be challenged, it’s another to process a play where you get the puck to space + into a position to pass it through a defenders legs all in the span of the 1/2 second in which the puck is coming to you
i saw a photo of nick seeler. as a flyers fan, nick has been an outstanding depth defenseman for us and the oilers could definitely benefit from him, stick him on your 3rd pairing and you’ve got a solid defensive defenseman for your team.
One big thing the defense isnt doing now that they were, early. They used to just rim the puck without looking for an outlet pass. They would just bury their head and fire it, jamming up the winger or just gifting the opposing dman an easy keep in. Possession time is key in games. Like, limiting needless dump ins when no one is chasing for it or a delayed offside and just chucking it back in, basically giving the other team possession.
If you do a deep dive into the defence, make sure you credit Coffey. And, breakdown what's different. Some fans don't seem to see the difference between the Manson defence and the Coffey defence. Good vid.

Yes! More on what defense is doing better please. I see them not watching the puck as much in the defensive zone, but it's not perfect. They're still not tying up bodies as much as I would like to see.

Imagine, if somehow, not likely, wpg, van, Edmonton and calgary all make playoffs? I know, Bittman, nyc, advertising and thus refs won't like it.....
@@robcramer4544 EDM ain’t catching Van lol. They’ve been on a 12 game heater and only gained like 4 pts
@@ANT4G0NIST it will come down to the last week but I think they will.
@@ANT4G0NISTVancouver has a losing spree on the way, they’ll bottle it in the final quarter
They’ve been riding on teams not taking them serious because they’ve been shit for 20 years. But now teams are gonna figure them out
Would love to see your defensive breakdown!
Foegele is looking like the real deal. After 3-4 extended looks worth the top 6 over the last few years, he's finally running with it. McLeod looked good also but is sharing the last top 6 spot with Kane
Would love to see Monahan get a run with this team. Guy has been through the ringer, and would be great to see him get a real shot in the playoffs.
Yes! More on what defense is doing better please. I see them not watching the puck as much in the defensive zone, but it's not perfect. They're still not tying up bodies as much as I would like to see.
Great observation, I noticed that too
More Oilers content. We need 2 forwards and a 1B goalie
Great video on my favorite team....even when they're not on the historical winning streak.
I would love to see the deeper look into the defense
McDavid makes NHL level hockey look like beer league. Crazy
This is a redemption arch everyone can love. From the bottom of the league to clawing back up to a playoff spot
Are you talking about the kraken or the oilers
Yea it’s the kinda arc that drives a team to win a cup. The oilers are playing ridiculously solid hockey right now.
"everyone can love" maybe if it was Columbus or SJ lmfao. You were SUPPOSED to be this good at the start of the year... finished in final four last year...
Shouldn't have ever been tied with SJ for last in the league to start... Soooo... No... Your assessment is way way off on this.
@@BoboMcBooboy multiple good teams are going through awful struggles right now. La in the last 20 has Almsot fallen out of a playoff spot, rangers have also been shit. It happens to many.
@@BoboMcBooboy Wow... who pizzed in your corn flakes this morning... calm down bud
13 straight baby. Bam 🎉
Let’s see the Oilers defence video!
would Love to see Edmonton win , and i am an Avs fan. Def a McDavid Hyman and Leon the Guys fan for sure.
Jets fan here, and the Oilers are probably the team that scares me the most in the West...
the kraken and oiler turnaround has been such a cool story line on the season
Would love to see a deep(er) dive on the defence of my team given how mixed feelings (at best) I have fo that Nurse contract. Bouchard has improved his all around game so much since Legend Coffey came in
I'm impressed with what Paul Coffey has done for the Oilers defense. Let's see if this carries through the later half of the season and into the playoffs.
watching this live in rogers last night the energy was so low going into the 2nd when they tied it up words cant explain how fucking loud it was
A hockey processing computer 😂
Yes do make a vid regarding the defense and it's massive improvement under Paul Coffey
Not to mention skinner has been ELITE, the defence has been ELITE 10 straight games only allowing 2 or less goals
