At 2:30 Catawba r. Orange flowers are flame azaleas, also note the American Chestnut leaves just before them but a shrub now b/c of the blight. If it is the blue blaze I think it is, it kinda went straight up the mountainside no? the white blaze is a gentler ascent just a lot longer, so really the "easy" way in a sense. The blue blaze was the former AT trail. Makes a good day loop coming back the blue blaze to parking (which is on the blue blaze, not the AT)
Love flame azaleas and trying to grow them in my woods. Didn’t notice the Chestnuts but yeah, they don’t get very big before the blight gets them.
@@robinfinehout1160 Yeah, the orange makes them look like some out-of-place tropical plant, did see some big A. chestnuts up in Michaux state park in PA right on the AT, maybe eight inches in diameter, surprised the heck out of me.
The West Virginia native plant groups see them pretty often, and post pics.

Yep for me backpacking is about the experience that makes me happiest whether it's side trails or alternates or whatever is going to be fun and make the most memories. No judgement on how others do their hike but I am going to hike for my enjoyment not anyone else's.

It's been almost two weeks since Skittles last post. I hope all is well with you and your hike. I know TaylorNahamshaHiker got off trail in New England due to wet weather and swollen rivers.
Taylor getting off the trail surprised me. But it's nasty in the upper 3 states.

It's been over month. I don't have Instagram, but people said you posted an update. I hope you are finishing or finished with your AT thru hike as the summer winds down. It was a thrill to watch you.
I looked on her IG and didn't see any update.
I tend to pick alternates based choice of scenery and safety due to current weather conditions.
I wonder if the fact that Becca hiked the CDT before the AT made her more open to take alternates. Much of the CDT seems to be a “choose your own adventure” type trail, due to the number of alternates and very really need to use them. I think people on the AT, with no experience on other long-distance trails, are easier to get swept up in the purist mind-set.

@@markcummings6856 nonsense. Are you saying that every AT hiker that takes a high-wind alternate during all storm didn’t hike the trail? If you think that, you’ve never been on an exposed ridge of the AT in fear for your life.
The CDT, as I said, is nothing but alternates. There is no one trail that everyone takes, esp. when you take into account fire closures. By your definition, almost nobody is a triple-crowned due to the red-line versus alternate issue on the CDT.
I would say that yellow-blazers don’t have the right to say they hiked the whole AT. But, if there’s a recognized alternate at you decide to take it, you’re good.

The appalachian trail is blazed white, blue blazes are side trails, but with that said it doesn't matter one bit do your thing.. it is your adventure and no one elses. i know many that skip entire sections just to be with friends and thats fine to, its there journey. hike on love the vids

@@frolege1 yeah, tend to follow several people doing the trail, that way I get the different perspectives. Continue to learn. Plus, I like the stories. That’s why I hike. I like to have the stories to tell

You know I kept thinking about ticks through all of your videos when I saw how narrow the trail is much of the time. Hate those little buggers. It why I wear long pants on the trail. Hike on!
The whole HYOH saying seems utterly ignored by a whole lotta hikers. Too bad - everyone is out doing their own thing, and no one needs to one up another. But they sure do! I was told on a hike last summer that I wasn't allowed to have a trail name because I hadn't done a real through hike. Pshaw - I am old enough to be that kid's grandma and I had my trail name before he was a twinkle in daddy's eye. After I laughed at him, he didn't talk to me again, which suits me just fine. Sheesh.
Yeah, I just don't understand it at all. People have issues about who belongs in "their" club I guess.

In my mind, absolutely every hike ever begins with "Ok, can someone leapfrog me in a Class B motor home? Yes / No" and the flowchart flows from there haha. If it ends at a good pair of trail shoes and gear on my back, then so be it. All the same.

Same - very out of the ordinary.
Today is her 83-ish day. Other hikers have mentioned meeting her past Smart Mtn (NH) and headed into the presidential mtns. With the weather, she still may be in NH.

She posted a story on IG this morning... she had a blackeye and referenced AT giving PCT vibes (from when she fell) no story behind what happened yet. So glad she posted ....I have been so worried.

The blue blaze in this area is the original AT so you were more of an OG purist than that lady 🤣🤣

Hope, like a few others, that you are enjoying the trail, tramily, sites, etc, but decided the vlogging interfered with the journey. Of course, equipment can fail on you too. Blessings!
