When you left Liberty Spring to do the Ridge late I was SCREAMING at my computer. I knew what lie ahead of you and how hard it would be. I love the Whites. I drive 3 1/2 hours one way at least once a month to spend time there hiking and backpacking. One mile in the Whites is harder than a mile in many other places. And the weather this year has sucked. The views are spectacular. And the best views in the Presi's are yet to come. Don't let the bit from Galehead hut to South Twin get you down. Don't let the Wildcats get you down. The Presidentials are enough to make up for it. I hope you have a spectacular bluebird day for your Traverse.
Hang in there. You are almost done now. We keep watching your videos as we sit down to join a meal. I am learning a lot from you and hope to put it to practice during my hike next year. I am working on a youtube channel for posting hiking videos, and I quickly learned just how time-consuming that is. So THANK YOU for taking the time to do the videos. We appreciate every single one of them.
Thank you for taking time to photograph the awesome vistas. Truly gorgeous! If I dare say it, you are learning life's lessons these months on the trail. Compared to hiking, regular life will be a breeze.
This is some of the best video footage I have seen from thru-hikers on the AT of the Whites. One really gets a good feel for the experience of trekking through them. Great job, Maddie! What an negative experience at the AMC hut. Who the heck is going to spend $170?
Don't stress too much about your pace in the whites everyone I've watched this year hiking only got in about 8 miles a day through that part so you're doing ok :)
You hiked through the Whites with the remnants of a tropical storm pushing through so don’t beat yourself up too much. Good luck to you, we are rooting for you.
24:24 the Whites are really tough and take a lot out of you. 8 -10 miles daily is all you can do. You are doing great! It's like twice the difficultly of the rest of the trail. You will be able to get back to normal milage in Maine. Don't let it get to you! You are still rocking the trail! We believe in you!!! 🦵🦵🌲🌲🌲😎
2:14 You are correct Kinsman is the steepest on the entire trail. There are other hard to climb mountains in the Whites like the Wildcats, but for me Kinsman stands out for how straight up and down it is. Great job making it over!!! You are doing great in the Whites! 🦵🦵🌲🌲🌲
I'm proud of you for finding a stealth camping spot rather than spending over $100; that's ridiculous. Sorry you weren't made to feel welcome at that first AMT shelter.
Oh cry count 15! We’d welcome you anytime - so shit! I mean you are amazing to be doing this. To have hiked for 5 months they have no idea what you are going through ups and downs!!! Keep on it - last year my boys and I watched Hiking dancer and Maybe Jessie Hikes - this year it’s you!! Keep on it! You are smashing it
Omg! You were in my recommended!! Don’t get too down on yourself! Mule and I dropped below 10s and were at each others throats throughout the whites! It was so physically and mentally challenging but you are strong and can keep pushing through! Keep up with some serious snackage, we blame malnourishment for the insane exhaustion! You guys rock!! I say hi to smoke too :)) miss you guys!! -Noodles
Oh Maddie....it's okay to cry!! The way you were treated back their needs to be addressed by the AT people who run the campsites. You SHOULD NOT have been treated negatively. Period. We're cheering you guys on...❤❤❤❤❤
As someone who lives in the Granite State (NH), and who has lived in several towns along the AT in NH, NC and TN... I can absolutely say that NH gets a ton of visitors from out of state. And honestly, I've never met a Granite Stater that doesn't follow the state motto "LIVE FREE OR DIE". You and The SmokeMaster are living free!! MANY on our planet don't understand what that REALLY means! Ignore the haters who judge others based on their own fears and lack the willingness and acceptance that YOUR paths is YOUR OWN!!! KEEP ON KEEPIN ON.
WOW, the only time I've ever been to the Huts in the Whites was during thru hikes and they have always been friendly and helping. Sorry that you had that experience. You guys are hiking great! I can't wait to see your response to Franconia Ridge! Well, I saw what you had for weather on Franconia so, oh well. My first hike I did it night hiking. I didn't get to see how pretty it was until my second hike. You still have from Webster Cliffs to Madison above tree line. I hope you guys have good weather for that. Stay safe Maddie, you and Smoke got this. geek
I will apologize for my evil laugh as you were struggling on the Kinsman trail. I have hiked the Kinsman trail from Cannon Mtn. down to Lonesome Lake, not so lonesome as it's got easy access from Franconia Notch and I93, and was scared out of my whites. Lonesome Lake hut. One of my faves. I spent a night there during caretaker season. There was still ice on the lake.
Hi Maddie 👋 Thank you 🙂 Hope you're doing well, and happy you were able to get a good weather day for the views👍As a Granite Stater, I would like to express my disappointment and discontent on how you were treated at the hut. No excuse for that. Whoever is responsible owes you and so many hikers an apology, because this isn't an isolated occurrence, over the last few years it's been happening more and more, not just at that location. It definitely needs to be addressed. NH shouldn't be known for that behavior. Those prices are so ridiculous 🙄 The staff needs a lesson in tact and decorum. Take care, stay safe my friend 🙏 Appreciate you!
You are so correct. In my thru hike of the John Muir Trail, in August, I took a nero in Mammoth, I took the public bus up to mammoth Mountain Adventure Center where I was gonna get a connecting bus up to Reds Meadow to get back on the JMT. Just as I pulled in, the Reds bus took off and I was stuck there, it was getting late and dark and I didn’t know what to do so I just stealth camped in the forest close to the Adventure Center. I woke up very early and went back to the adventure center hoping to get information about the first bus out to Reds. Walking out of the forest to cross the street, I first ran into a crew of what looked like city utility workers in a truck, I think they knew I was stealth camping, so I was a little hesitant to go ask them. These guys were so cool, they reassured me. There’d be a bus in 45 minutes. I think they totally understood about having to stelth camp for the evening. They were just really customer service oriented, like I think they were probably trained in it for their job. Shortly after arriving to the adventure center, just a walk across the road it finally got to be close to 630AM. All the businesses were closed, but workers started coming in, and one of them an older woman, looked like her job was just that of a public service ambassador. She wore the same clothes as the utility workers I talked to earlier, so I assume she was a public service employee. She absolutely rocked, she was checking in with everyone around who is waiting for buses or had questions and she was so helpful. This left me with a great feeling leaving Mammoth Lakes, and I definitely plan to return there sometime with my family for a vacation.
7:15 the leftover hut food is cold pancakes in the mornings. Don't eat any cold eggs, you don't want to know! I agree that all the day hikers and most of the hut croo look down on thruhikers. No respect for someone that has literally walked there. It's sad. Just ignore them. We know how amazing you are! ❤
That's for sure. The majority of day hikers are tourists, and the hut crews cater to the tourists because they pay those ridiculous prices. And those tourists are the ones ruining the trails because they don't follow leave no trace, and basically don't give a damn. The prices are justified by the powers that be to offset all the rescues of unprepared, and illogical tourists and people who require being rescued. That's it in a nutshell. 🤷♂️😔
@@db.mc2 I’m not sure I agree with you on some of this. I’m watching another AT. Hiker group. They just went though Shenandoah NP. When you enter the park ( on the AT) they have a sign telling you how far away from the trail you have to be to camp, water and such things. Also the one area they camped at there is a sign saying you can’t camp past this point because of the elevation. I hike there all the time so I know. They still camped and even bragged about that certain spot. It’s not always the tourist damaging these places. I’d be a tourist and I know all about what you should and shouldn’t do. Just cause your a tourist doesn’t mean you will destroy the place.
@dawnsteisslinger353 I'm referring to NH trails, and what I've seen and experienced here. I understand where you're coming from, and don't discount that, it's just the influx here, and what's been happening for quite some time. I have no doubt that plenty of thru hikers, day hikers are guilty of it as well , some people just don't get it. The trails are to be respected, so they are around for all to enjoy. There is a town in Vermont that had to pass an ordinance to close certain roads during peak foliage because of people trespassing on private residences to take videos and pictures for social media, it's getting pretty ridiculous
Thanks for sharing with us the true steepness of what you are climbing! And the foot placement for climbing down as well. Those are white wood asters at 5:15 - not my favorite flower as they tend to spread all over the place, but cheery none the less. Through the window at 6:23 is a beautiful Mountain Ash with all of its orange berries. Never seen clouds like those on that ridge. Your shadow on the cloud was outstanding.
I don’t remember other hikers that I have watched over the years talk about having to pay in the Whites. I wonder why? Considering that you don’t have to pay in the other AT states, I would also be a little disgruntled. I don’t blame you but it is what it is.
Great video! I've enjoyed following your journey. I celebrated my 4 year AT anniversary! Amazing Hike. The only advice i can offer is to split the day up into multiple hikes. Take advantage of any break in the weather. The Whites will really beat yah up. Stay positive. The Appalachian Money Club still has a thorm in my side lol.. Safe travels! Snowman ⛄️
Again love the weekly updates! This definitely looks so much harder. You are inspiring for your dedication to complete this hard journey. I look forward to next week! Cheers… Ranger and Smoke
Oh man I was so worried you were gonna drop your phone, twist your ankle.or fall. Sketchy rocks. I was like don't worry about filming this, just don't get hurt!
This was a very good video. I found myself wanting to watch the rest of it after I walked my dog. Those people pushed you to that awesome hotel and chinese....so that's good. And a zero. I'm rigid myself....so I come off wrong to people......i cant really help it right now..... It seems like those hard times and good times keep you in line with the hike. I'm watching your video again...it was really good Lets see what the ranger is doing next. Yes dear.....Cute guy.
You've already been keeping a count of your times crying, but we also need a count of "F-bombs"🙊😆. Being able to say f¥(K! in frustration while keeping a smile on your face is awesome. Instead of sugar coating your journey like many others, you're keeping it real, and that's why we watch! 👍
Yeah! Another video, wish I were there,I’m still nursing my knee from surgery. Living through you and thanks for sharing! Love your work.❤I’m sorry for your bad experience at the hut. Get some duct tape for your shirt.
I've just watched both of your videos from the Whites and whoa they look tough! Beautiful but tough. (Looks more like SW BC hiking now...) It's definitely much harder to make up the miles in this kind of terrain but it seems like you're actually doing pretty good, at least from where I'm sitting! Still enjoying seeing what you see, and still willing you onwards 👍
I think by the time you were on this part of the hike, you are so tired, ready to be done with the trail that it is all a mental game to keep yourself going…did you think looking back that some of the worry about the weather was as much about having a good reason to just take a day off and a break, or really concerns about the weather. i am totally not being critical when asking this question…i have never done a long distance hike like you are doing /have done, so im just really curious about how your body and mind fight each other when you get tired and you want to finish the trail because you are so close, but you are also hating the trail and would just like to run fast away from it…lol…and sit and eat cheese burgers for days and not move again for at least a week. I can only imagine the emotions you go through from day to day and hour to hour as you go along…i imagine the stress of getting there on time is a big factor. I think after you are done, I imagine it would like a woman having a child…so painful you dont want to do it ever again…but once its over…you cant imagine not going back or doing another hike. I hope im right…because i cant wait for your next adventure…but at least one thing…this hike will make van life seem like a breeze…😂😂
😮 I think I have skied Franconia notch 😮 so that is some serious elevation ! Is that what the AT does ? Go UP the mountain never around? You are a trooper Maddie ! I’m sorry Maddie 😢😢 I think you are a sweet person and always try to be nice and freindly so running into some ignorant people like that DOES hurt ! It’s okay to feel like you do ! You made me smile SO hard when u were excited about your shadow❤❤❤❤
Bummer about the hut:( My daughter and I stopped by in August. The people staffing it at that time were very welcoming. We had food for a small donation. It was filling healthy and delicious. Agree the overnight cost is prohibitive for many. We were camping nearby for $22 a night which is a bargain for an older retired adult:)
I'm unable to walk half a mile and have been so invested in this hike. You won't believe how angry I am that they charge that much!!!! I can't believe they won't let us thru hikers sleep for free. At least let us set up a tent outside!!!! That's OK tho. We didn't want to go the extra miles anyway. I hope they go out of business soon. I can't believe I'm this angry.
if that was the Lonsome Lake, I got the SAME vibe when I went there a few years ago, and I wasn't a through hiker ...ya so weird, I would never go there and did not renew my membership because of it.
You two are Precious always remember that there's going to be times were not welcome but it's okay You got each other and You got JESUS CHRIST our LORD . ❤⚘🥰🙋♀️🙏
Just came back from Jo- Mary road. Hikers are routing around gulf hagas and the Hermitage river crossing. It's a long ways off if you're still in New Hampshire. I crossed Mud pond outlets before Antlers and the water was up to my 32" inseam, but has since dropped. The provided rope at the first ford was necessary, but you can do it. No idea how sketchy the ford is just north of Mahar landing....be brave and do it with company filming you.
Never worry about the milage. The Whites just suck for trying to do any milage. Be proud of what you have done. Sorry that you got some extremely rude kids running the huts. Not to mention the rude ones at the pond. When you probably read this you probably already know about the storm coming up the Eastern Coast. Praying for your safe journey. God bless you both.
Yes, the Whites are a different critter - the trails can be difficult, the weather can - and often does - change in mere moments and treeline is 4,000 - 6,000 feet lower than in other similar mountains in the temperate zone. Remember the Serenity Prayer? Well, here it is: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." You must take The Trail and the mountains on their own terms. Accept that and manage the rest the very best you can. Be well, stay safe. 🥾
Doesn't anyone have a needle and thread or dental floss you could use to fix your shirt so you aren't feeding the moskas? In a pinch, duct tape will hold your sleeve together. I hope your package has a new shirt!
What you had coffee at 4:00 a.m.? And then you didn't out on trail until 8:00 a.m.? I'm not sure what the problem is here? You should get out on trail right after you have your coffee...
Been a Maddie fan since the beginning of your van days, but I'd like to add, I am now a Smoke fan too! I am so happy he is with you.
Don't worry about it ... I've noticed that when you cry, you get out some of your frustration and your mood usually picks up and you leave that particular stumbling block, negative experience or sadness behind. This appears to be your thru-hiker process. It's WAY more productive and less damaging than some other people's processes!!!
Perfectly said ❤
It’s definitely my process too and I’m not a thru hiker. It’s how we’re made, so let those tears flow when necessary.
@@TeeGreen222I agree! And ESPECIALLY when I am sleep deprived! 😅
Great thumb nail picture! Your shirt is like a cool symbol for the grit you have on the trail.
That’s so sweet Smoke sewed your shirt! ☺️💕
Love.

That wind was intense.

The whites is definitely a challenge but the scenery and foliage is beautiful and you are absolutely smashing it 💪

We appreciate every single one of them.
The thumbnail pic or whatever looks straight out of "Die Hard" -- what a look! Keep rollin with the punches, Maddie!
Lets go! another instalment of the best Thru hike series on UA-cam!
Thank you for taking time to photograph the awesome vistas. Truly gorgeous!

You've already been keeping a count of your times crying, but we also need a count of "F-bombs"🙊😆. Being able to say f¥(K! in frustration while keeping a smile on your face is awesome. Instead of sugar coating your journey like many others, you're keeping it real, and that's why we watch! 👍
Liz on the PCT, something to look forward to!
Yeah! Another video, wish I were there,I’m still nursing my knee from surgery. Living through you and thanks for sharing! Love your work.❤I’m sorry for your bad experience at the hut. Get some duct tape for your shirt.
Sorry to hear about your knee! Speedy recovery!
I’d camp behind the dumpster of a crab shack before Paying to stay at a AMC hut.
Chinese buffet…yum
Can't arrive if you're not alive. Sometimes it's better safe than sorry! ❤
Good decision to wait out bad weather in the whites, plus the ridge is so beautiful when you do have views, money well spent waiting it out
I'm unable to walk half a mile and have been so invested in this hike.
Happy Feet, walk good take care and stay well
You two are Precious always remember that there's going to be times were not welcome but it's okay You got each other and You got JESUS CHRIST our LORD .
You’re a fan.. FYI Survivor starts on the 27th!!
It is what it is.....
Want that shirt
So is Smoke with uou all the time hiking now? If so that's gotta be nice😊
No sloping or storm and needed rest
23:15 Please please don't night hike in the Whites! We don't want anything to happen to you!!! 😮
Those are trails?🤷🏻♀️
Yea! Why would they do that to us -per- son- all eee! 😂
22:40 💀
What you had coffee at 4:00 a.m.? And then you didn't out on trail until 8:00 a.m.? I'm not sure what the problem is here? You should get out on trail right after you have your coffee...
Aya los osos son bien grandes aca no son tan grandes pero hay jaguares
No jaguares por me, por favor!
Keep it up Maddie and Smoke. Lost your cash? Did it grow feet??
welcome too where i grew up its not that bad lols
Now that you have been hiking the AT for more than 100 days. Tell me, have you seen BigFoot yet?
In the Whites, sucking up all that aluminum.
