A viewer with quadriplegia asked about any innovations in disability technologies that could help. Just so happened, Neuralink recently received FDA approval to begin human trials. Plus many other exciting developments in AI, robotics, and stem cell therapy. And that’s just the first question of today’s Lightning Round Video. Enjoy!

I actually went looking last year to see what's up with CRISPR, turns out there was a bunch of human trials on people (mostly kids) with rare and completely paralyzing genetic disorders or genetic disorders with high mortality rates between 2015-2019. The crazy part was (in small trials of 10-20 participants, mind) a success rate between 60-90%. Some are only partial success, but some were able to stop taking their medications entirely. Toddlers previously doomed to be bedbound for life were learning to crawl, I almost burst into tears reading these studies. Can't find them for the life of me right now. How is that not front page news?

Because it isn’t meant for the masses. It’s meant to be kept away from those of us with poor people insurance, because those insurance plans don’t pay enough for stuff like this. Telling all these people that you can cure them, but only if they come up with $1.9 million dollars each, would (properly) anger just about everyone in the country. They might do something crazy, like demand single-payer healthcare. And so, as far as the news is concerned, Crispr and gene-therapy will take a backseat to billionaires and their submarines…. Maybe in 10 years, maybe in 100 years, I’m not holding my breath.

Neuralink has major dystopian potential. Even if they won't have predatory practices (which is best case scenario, very realistic that it would be predatory), it's a major cybersecurity threat. Nothing is “unhackable”, there is only hard to hack and slow to hack, and someone smart enough could hack it eventually (no need to explain the danger of that).
    *Edit*
I might not have explained it well enough, but I'm not saying that we all will get hacked and killed. All I am saying is that it is possible, without some tech we don't have that uses something like sound waves to resonate with brains or something else new. And the amount of encryption and security that could be used directly on it, is low. This is because the more advanced it is, it needs more compute. More compute means more electricity, more size, more cost, more complications. Stuff that, on the level of it being hard enough to hack that hackers will be very discouraged to hack it, will need a large, expensive and hot SoC. Don't forget that the pay-off if it is hacked is very high as it is potentially life-threatening, so even if they put state-of-the-art protection, some hacker could and would hack, and many will try (if this type of tech spreads to begin with). TL;DR, it's not immune to hacks.
(i seem to be either controversial or popular or both, which is good in my eyes as it will mean more people thinking about this more thoroughly.)

It can be made unhackable enough. But humans won't put this in their head if it's not connected to the internet in some way, so it's going to be pretty easily hacked. With hard barriers you have to at least get very creative.

I want to be one of those nerds that genuinely thanks you for talking about razors. I'd been unhappy shaving with cartridges my entire adult life, but the idea of switching to old-fashioned safety razors kinda scared me because i'd been told the old style ones could be annoying or dangerous. Between you and Practical Engineering both talking about how lifechanging Henson was though, I decided to give them a shot - and I'll be damned if that razor isn't the best thing I've ever used. The learning curve was practically nonexistent and now I've got probably a year and a half worth of blades in my cabinet and I'm getting the best shaves of my life. I swear you'd think I was reading from ad copy here but I'm not - these razors are just that damn good.

I’m in the exact same position. I have sensitive skin and I kept getting red marks on my face bc I wasn’t replacing my cartridge’s often enough. But the thing is, cartridge razors are just way too expensive to exchange as frequently as I would’ve needed to.
I was pretty worried at first about getting a single blade razor rather than the multi-bladed cartridge, but seeing Joe’s description of how chatter works, I figured that seemed more scientific than the cartridge commercials I’d seen (and they have a 30 day back guarantee lol). So I just went for it. Best decision of my life!! Literally, like Joe Scott said in the video, it’s a shift to your entire frame of reference. You do NOT need to spend a lot to have clean shaven sensitive skin. Awesome!!

3:59 There have also been a string of updated variations on the old-school way of using CRISPR/Cas9 for either knockouts or homology-directed repair. Tons of different Cas proteins have been discovered or modified. New strategies such as prime editing, homology-independent targeted insertion, base editing (as you mention), and so on have been developed. There have also been lots of advances in delivery of the CRISPR/Cas system to cells - which is especially critical for therapeutic applications. This also draws on the lipid nanoparticle technology that allowed mRNA vaccines to work, but other avenues are being explored as well.
TL;DR lots of stuff going on. Not much has reached patients yet, but it's coming.

I like the idea of Cities In The Sky on Venus. Just don't fall off! (Venus is like 700 degrees and high pressure at the surface, but a certain distance up into the atmosphere, and it's extremely similar to Earth. It's the same principle as Earth's atmosphere - cooler and lower pressure at high altitudes).

    • @luminiferous1960
      @luminiferous1960 11 місяців тому +3

Because Titan's atmosphere is mostly nitrogen (about 95 percent) and methane (about 5 percent), with small amounts of other carbon-rich compounds, you'll need to wear oxygen tanks. Since it is so cold, you'll also need to wear an environmental suit. With the extra weight of those items, it is not clear whether or not you would be able to fly under your own power even though the gravity is only 1/7th that of earth's gravity.
If you were in a large building that is temperature controlled and contains a sufficient proportion of oxygen in the interior atmosphere at the same pressure as the exterior atmosphere, then you would have a better chance of flying under your own power.

    Nice intro, bro!🙂
As for neurolink, I think real promise for the physically disabled lies with the notion of using it to control an exoskeleton that allows them to get around in a way that approaches normal.
Of course, it wouldn't allow the paralyzed to actually feel anything (at least, I don't think so), but it would be nice for them to be able to have an exoskeleton stand them up and move them around.
It would probably improve their health, as well.
William Gibson actually wrote a story about that very thing in the collection, "Burning Chrome."

I'm old enough to have started shaving with one of the metal "safety razor" things from Olden Tymes. I switched to cartridges in college, when my "welcome kit" included a double-bladed unit which was lighter, easier to use, and gave a better shave. I switched to the Henson razor a few months ago, and it's solid feel and light aluminum leave me very satisfied ... and I'm not wasting any more plastic! Thanks, Joe Scott!

My first Monty Python movie was The Meaning of Life when I was a young lass of 16 in 1985. I also thought I was going to die, I was laughing so hard! Especially during the scene with Mr. Creosote. As someone who was also bullied, I totally get where that sense of humor comes from - it's a good way of disarming people and protecting yourself. You wouldn’t believe it - but as an extremely athletic and ripped 6’4” male, other athletic males who obviously have varying sorts of inferiority complexes - but they’re almost always quite muscular and overly brash - and they’ll bully me with lowkey trash talk to try to goad me into competitions like pickup basketball so they can try to beat me - and if I decline they talk shit
🤣 It’s so silly and juvenile 😅 and most of the time they don’t even realize that they’re coming across as fools 🤣
Just thought I’d put that out there so you know everyone gets bullied as a young male - it’s just how humans are wired!
And your bullying stopped in school.. the type of bullying I am talking about has continued at least into my late 20’s - while they’re 18-22 😅
Knowing psychology I get that they may see me as more attractive or athletic, that combined with the possibility that they see me garner respect from those around me and because in terms of nature I am mating competition. That drives them to become driven to prove themselves a more desirable male than I am. What’s even more telling is how they almost always only act this way if a woman they are attracted to is in eye shot, or if their group of close friends are with them.
They probably teased you to feel powerful, because they felt powerless over another key aspect or recent event of their life. While with me they try to goad me into competition so they can prove their better potential mates than me 🤣 🤣 🤣 😅

@KC Christensen & Joe Scott. There IS a successful trial so far that has a wireless signal sensor ABOVE a Spinal break, and a wireless signal receiver BELOW that spinal break, where the brain sends signals to the 'Sender unit' it then sends signals to the 'Receiver unit' that then is 'Wired' into nerve endings to the associated muscles, call it a 'Bridge' so to speak. So when the user thinks about walking, all the signals are sent via the tech, to their legs, and they can move them again. It HAS allowed someone who suffered a spinal chord injury who COULDN'T walk, take his first tentative steps again! Now THERE'S hopes!!!

The arctic ice was thinning and now it is back up in thickness.
Global instrument temps are often directly compared to historical temps which isn’t ideal.
For decades people were warned about global cooling, then decades of global warming became the issue.
The environment is such an incredibly complex system it’s really hard to pick apart trends from our tiny window of existence on the planet. Is it us or just a cycle?
There is enough uncertainty that it is a hard sell for people.
Personally, I don’t really care what the truth of the matter is because I try to be cleaner and more efficient in resource use because why would I not? If I can lessen the amount of pollution I generate why would I not? To me it makes no sense to do otherwise.

Neurolink was created to communicate with other planets just with thought. Atlantean technology. To much room for abuse of technology. You can literally communicate with anyone in your queue list anywhere in the universe without a cell phone or computer. It's not the mark either. You can have neurolink turned off if you so choose. You can see nerve patterns in your brain and ask your brain to take an alternate route and heal the nerve paths. Elon is my brother and being the Oracle of God he knew I would be completely honest with feedback. At first you slow down the next day it's activated and you see so much it's a little overwhelming but this operation paperclip experiment needed a human vessel to find the clones as in star wars clone wars to shut them down. It's part of Space Force division. You don't have to believe me that's fine just stating my experience with neurolink helps you locate glitches to reroute everything back to the original blueprint God designed. Cell phones are more than enough for most. Only those on the reward list will be offered the punish list in this earth school experiment will not have the privilege of sacred technology.

Thank you for your insight on reactions to immediate vs future threats. It helped me realize that's why I always run into issues trying to get people to take care of problems which aren't immediate. But I think it's not about evolution, but rather stress. If you can put off solving a problem to deal with something that's clear and present, you'll prioritize the present instead. Plus people feel more rewarded if they solve a current problem rather than a future one.

Same reason why governments suck. They don't think about the future when they exploit everything for their own pockets or to gain power, their decisions are only relevant to them for 4 to 8 years, yet they can change the direction of a country for centuries. One example is past actions creating divisions now between races, nothing to do with us.

    6.02 “Immediate threats”.
If we assume that all problems must be addressed, we constantly progress in finding new solutions, and problem-solving capacities increase over time, it logically follows that prioritizing immediate problems ensures the most efficient possible state. By addressing immediate problems, we capitalize on the momentum of problem-solving capacities and the potential for continuous progress.

The climate is obvs a big thing for you (and most that watch your channel), I really want to know if you have read bjorn lomborg’s latest book?
He makes a very striking case about the manner in which we are trying to correct the climate is in a very wasteful way!
Granted, my main criticism of his work is that he very much focuses on GDP of a country and how climate will effect it. I get his argument (one of them being that the richer we make a population, eventually the more they care and implement measures to improve the environment) however, at what cost?
He also says that in places like China recently they need to keep up with increased energy demand and so make more coal fire power stations.
Now this means they will be getting richer over time BUT their health will deteriorate in this same time due to the extra pollution.
