Nimoy also said he based it partially on a body builder doing the “crab pose.” The Coolest Spaceship ever 2nd only to The Millenium Falcon.

I didn't know until now that ILM was responsible for the special effects and that Leonard Nimoy came up with this great ship design. Wonderful.
