ETERNAL DARKNESS: SANITY'S REQUIEM was one of the best Nintendo GameCube games EVER! And it's one of the few scary video games that's ever actually scared me! I haven't played it since it came out in 2002, so I'm excited to jump back in and experience all those old sanity effects! I can't believe this game was published by Nintendo and was rated "M" for Mature!

Nice to know that Indiana Jones is among the few that managed to end their chapter without dyin gor suffering horrible consequences. Not only that but he seems to be very wise when, after being told by Pius that "Mantorok isn't easy to control" he simply said "who says I'm trying to control him?"
Like, man, that sounded so cool, at least to me.
"Alex dead in a bathtub of her own blood? That got me pretty hard." - Projared
I KNEW somebody would point it out lol
Omg lmao
aw man... I just commented this lol
Calm Jared voice
Looks at bathtub
Sudden spook'ems happens
Jared: "Did it get ya?"
**Top 10 anime betrayals**
Jared, one thing to note about the Mantorok rune, it actually changes up some of your spells when used! Reveal Invisible actually turns *YOU* invisible, which you can exploit for sneak attacks in later chapters!
It also changes the Enchant spell into a poison buff and you already figured out what it does with Recover.
Not sure if you'll read this or even take it in consideration for next episodes but these effects really are very cool to mess around with!
Not to mention, Mantorok has the best whispering voice.
The one drawback to mantarok is he can't summon, since he got bound.
Yeah, its pretty awesome. You can also cast spells without their scroll by experimenting or writing the combinations on paper from a previous play through like I did years ago.
He said this was missable and he was right. 3 playthrus and I completely forgot about that door when I learned the Summon Trapper Spell each time. I figured you'd get the Mantorok Rune(considering the interface's design, I correctly guessed it existed) after you played it through thrice, choosing each Guardian's Relic as Pious. I ended up finding it with a friend when I let them play and I've never missed it since.
One of the best uses of Mantorok is using the sanctuary spell that recovers various things over time.
The panels that you were wondering about keep the Traps from activating for a short period of time when you press them.
Super useful. Not easy to figure out what it does since to make it obvious you have to rush from the room immediately to a trap hall.
When the enemies don't drain your sanity on seeing you and instantly die like that, they're actually just hallucinations from your low sanity. They don't do any damage but because they otherwise act like real enemies, it's impossible to tell. It's a really dangerous effect if it triggers when there are real enemies nearby.
That's point! Plus the game is more realistic! One the best game on GameCube exclusive!
46:58 "Did I just imagine I was a hot, blonde woman with my creepy ghost grandpa talking to me? This was the weirdest hallucination yet."
I realize that you're probably several episodes ahead but 2 things Jared;
1) You *need* to move in order for magic to recover, it may also work when walking into a wall, not sure
2) The "poo gas" damages you, spells are cancelled when you're damaged. So it doesn't matter; don't poo gas
I think my favourite part of the game is how genuinely fascinating the plot is. Usually horror game plots are garbage, but this is really enticing me.
Possibly onlookers: "Oh my god, Alex. Those stone busts are watching you as you pass by them! Surely they are a consequence of the deep, unfathomable evil which plagues this cursed mansion and the land beneath! The horror, the horror!"
Stone Bust: "DAT ASS!"
The sound design in this game is really impressive especially for what like 2002?
Yes. It's 2002.
This heavy breathing is really getting to me. Unsettling as hell
@@guyhigh45 I'm really impressed they where able to achieve that sound back in '02
@@evanceier8577 I feel bad that I never got the GameCube...
Not bad for a game produced in a dump town like St. Catharines Ontario
jesus christ an hour long, you spoil us jared
Yeah...but keep doing tho.
I love it honestly lol
I'm seriously impressed how many different characters there are.
The bathtub never bothered me, I was like "well that's weird" but for some reason that's like the only jumpscare in my whole life that never ever got me. Every other jump in everything gets me.
Very late I know, but I think the game almost works against itself here. All the creepy sanity effects put you in a constant vigilant state while playing this. None of them are really "jump-scary" but all of them mess with you. You just get into a mindset of expecting weird uncanny stuff to happen, but not getting that panic reaction to any of it. Very much a prolonged grinding down of your mental fortitude. This game is definitely a marathon of attacking your mental stability, not a sprint. Because the game trains you on this kind of reaction the one real jumpscare gets treated like any other weird effect.
Jared: "He looks like William Riker"
Lindsey immediately punches and gets into a firefight with his assailant.
Me: "Yep, that's Riker, alright!"
FOR THE ALGORITHM
HELL YEAH!
But which fossil did he take??
That bathroom scare I played when I was probably 13 or 14 and it scares me and caused me to be shaking and unable to continue. It took me weeks to even play it again. It shook me big time.
Same story for me, friend. I know the pain.
@@Nintendoggy it was a very intense experience
God I want a sequel. Fun fact for those who've never played this, the devs confirmed when you see yellow magic it's associated with a fifth unnamed ancient!
And the enemies just so happen to dissapear with a yellow color when they die. *_interesting indeed_*
@@HATVAULT oh my God they do
@@bongosmcdongos4190 Not to mention the yellow traps. Maybe yellow is associated with death, who knows?
I think "Him" from the Power Puff Girls also talked in multiple voices in the same manner as the green god.
Oh wow, Tomb Raider Guy didnt end up in a faq'ed up state like the rest of the team. Pretty nice!
Unless, of course, off screen he succumbed to darkness/insanity or whatever.
Naw, if they don't die at the end of their chapter, they lived. Usually because they had some impact on Alex's chapter.
They also don't get a statue in the Tome room.
Also noticed the ones that survived all takes near the 21st century.
Been mostly watching your series at night after I finish a night course.
Now I've started having Eternal Darkness dreams, and they're FUNKY.
Like, I end up waking up inside my house and I have the spell appearing around me in the dream.
Pargon Tier Mantorok.
37:57 You need to move for Magick to recharge, so run in circles when you can and back and forth in part of the corridor.
57:09 Yeah, getting the Mantorok rune is optional, but well worth the backtracking and Bloody Stupid™ not to do it since its magick counters *all* the other Ancient Ones and recovery raises all meters.
For some reason while my brain was recalling this chapter, I thought Dr. Lindsey looked like (and was hoping he looked like) Nigel Thornberry...killing Cthonian monsters! What a grand adventure! Smashing!
11:32 Mortal adjacent.
young me spent most of this game going "oh this is cool, these sanity effects are neat and they're pretty funny sometimes" and then I inspected that totally normal-looking bathtub and almost jumped out of my chair
...so OBVIOUSLY I've been looking forward to this episode :J
>"But I've got a shotgun"
>The shotgun has a UAC logo in it
>"*Doom music intensifies*"
*Happy UNF noises*
Fun fact: The bit with the acid bowl? That could actually happen. Yes, it says 'oh, it could melt metal', but when it comes to GOLD, it has no actual effect. The properties in Gold make it immune to corrosion, meaning you can dip it in acid, and it will actually come out cleaner rather than damaged.
I loved Edwin L. he feels so overpowered and Indiana Jones-esque.
Oh, and those pannels were for deactivate the traps of the corridors for 20 secs or less.
That Tome belongs in a museum!
really hope he continues playing this because it's really good
An hour of solid D&D-notes~! AWESOME! WOO~!
Yeah that scare got me. But I'm easier spooked. Love this game though. Thank you for playing it, I'm too much of a coward to play horror games.
Chattur'gah bullets, they might be dumb but they will still cap the greenies up
Here for the thumbnail, staying for the video.
God, I laughed at the way the grandpa was talking to Alex. I couldn't take it seriously if he wasn't suppose to be the murderer, he sounded way too suspicious.
So glad yer continuing :O)
Almost thought you were gonna miss the Mantarock rune.
That bathtub scene got me too. There is also a skippable jumpscare with a man hanging over the piano.
That f***ing bathub killed me when I was a kid
Casually loading a shotgun in front of a monster makes it feel like less of a horror game and more of a DOOM prequel.
That bathtub scene got me pretty good back then.
That was so well planned.
I was saddened by how you missed the thing last time but no, all part of the plan.
Legendary.
15:30 house of the Dead refrence nice!
It got me. Not a big jump, but definitely some drawback and fight-or-flight. Well done.
This game needs more NPCs so when Sanity goes down you don't know if you are killing bad guys or not, and NPCs start hitting you if you attack them or they are just bad guys.
Mantorok is the uber alignment. Mantorok aligned spells overpower and defeat all three other alignments, but generally cost significantly more magic. The sort-of exception is the healing spell; while it costs twice as much as any other healing spell, it restores the same amount as the other three, to all three stats. Because it also restores magic, it actually only costs as much as any other healing spell, meaning its the most economic way to restore health and sanity. But you do need to have the initial cost available, or it can't be used.
Magick Pool is the preferred recover method with it. It far exceeds the restoration powers of Recover, with a bonus spoiler effect.
The reveal invisibility spell cast with the Mantorok rune actually turns you invisible, and enchanted weapons will poon enemies for a short time if Mantorok is used.
I love binging your complete series, and this one will be great
This comment exists for the purposes of this playthrough being Completed. Complete the Playthrough please.
I'm really happy that you decided to keep this going. I'm really enjoying the content! Not a game that I can easily get access to!
Thank you for playing through this without keeping your sanity topped off at all times it's great to show of the real vibe of it and all the sanity effects. Looking forward to more.
One hour Eternal Darkness episode? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP WOOOOOOO
Thank you for continuing the series! Myself and many fans of yours, are eagerly awaiting for the completion of this series!
I enjoyed this hour long chapter playthrough! I would like more of this, it was fun to watch in a seamless-ish format!
A couple tips:
You can experiment with runes to create spells, even when you don't have the scroll for the spell.
Also the Mantarok rune is very overpowered. It costs more magick to use, but you want to use it. Its dispel effects all the other colors, the enchant, shield and attack spells gives a poison effect when it hits the enemies, and its reveal invisbile spell turns YOU invisible to enemies.
I knew the bathtub scare (but I never played this game) even so it got me; thanks Jared for playing this game
Please keep it going! I loved this game growing up and want to see you beat it!
Woo! More Eternal Darkness! Love your commentary on this game.
That bathtub scene really got me
Fun fact: the torch 1 shot ko the purple and green zombie.
I miss Daggerfall but this game keeps getting more awesome. Never even heard of it before your playthrough. Thanks for the long episode
Thank you for continuing this series.
Extra long episode? Yes please!. Really enjoying the story as I never was able to finish it as a kid.
I'm really loving these Longplay sessions! Keep it up Jared!
Hay, finally someone survived, go Dr. Lindsey!
that age of empires sound effect is currently my facbook messenger tone and ive been keep thinking my phone is goin off hahaha
The bath fucking scared me!
Thanks for that LONG episode !
and Please Continue
Thank you so much for the long episode! It was enjoyed greatly
I'm loving this play through! Leaving comment for algorithm and because I want to see more of this series!
this is my fave horror series alongside the one that was the inspiration for resident evil doors (2017, saw it whenever i could during the big hurricane whenever i had enough signal) :D
I was literally on the edge of my seat. Great episode
13:45 the glasses guy looks like the preacher character from twisted metal black... 🤔
I mean, I didn't jump or start crying at the *big spook-em,* but I think I felt my heart stop for a second.
I have to agree, in 1984 you'd figure he would have at least five cameras.
But seriously though how did this game NOT become a franchise? It 100% deserves to be up there with resident evil and silent hill.
Still having a great time watching this series!
I remember hearing about the tub scene online so much when this came out, was always so curious about it
I must admit. I did jump at that scene. Great episode
Remember: magic doesn't recharge while you stand still. You have to walk around for it to happen.
That bathroom scared the living shit out of me and my brother way back when he was playing through this. Since there were almost no jumpscares (if at all if my memory is correct) we totally did not expect a scare from examining.
This series is a freakin treat for such a shitty year.
So cool to finally see this game done right!
Now i got the Intro of the Original Resident Evil with the "I GOT A SHOTGUN" line in my head~
lazypurple fan?
@@zhenweilai799 Phelous actually! ;)
@@ShadeMeadows oh ok , i'll look it up
Loving this playthrough.
This is really thrilling and something else, i like it :D i'm glad you're doing more
Loved the house of the dead reload reference lol
now that i think about it, why Agustus needed Dr Lindsay to find the temple?
he was there, he knew where was it
what was the need to wait a thousand years for satelites to be invented to go there again once he discovered that the heart didnt move?
Welp, next time I get a Gamecube, a memory card for it, and Eternal Darkness... I'M GOING FOR THAT MANTOROK RUNE!
You need to _move_ to recover magic. Just walk in circles!
So glad you went back for the mantorok rune 😄
I never got the purple rune, as you said, it's missable. One day I'll replay it. It was such a fun game and seeing you play it it barely aged.
Ive never seen this game until now but I love it
Man I've been watching the whole time and I have no idea who I should be rooting for or against
Woo! I love *drum noises*
....
...
These!
Came for the game, stayed for the POO GAS!
Two Eternal Darkness videos in a row?! Awwwww yeeeah!
I love this series.
DooMguy stance activated
Long episode? Yay!
Getting all Pargon up in this temple.
I can only imagine what this game would looks like if it came to the Switch. Maybe tweak some of the insanity effects to look more like Switch graphics (volume down, fake joycon disconnect, etc.) I'd play the hell out of that... and then proceed to never sleep again.
