Secondly the attack was done by a enemy apparently capable of sneaking in and launching a surprise attack without being detected by council sensors. While Earth had shown a eerie capability of detecting the most stealthy of the council ships. This enemy was likely to be capable of defeating the council in a short amount of time, getting help that might not be as easily ambushed and surprised would be valuable. It's a plausible desperate tactic even if a bit unlikely.
