Harlan and I have known each other for about 39 years, and he has never failed to astound me with his talent as a writer supreme, his un-checked generosity, his temper and his willingness to put up with me. And then there is his wonderful wife Susan, who is the one of the finest people on the planet and never fails to accept Harlan for being just Harlan (maybe she came from Krypton).
I've been a fan of Harlan Ellison ever since my parents let me read science fiction. He's been one of the driving motivators for me since day one of my writing journey. Just reading your comment was amazing. Getting a first hand account of the guy.
Harlan Ellison inspired me to be a short story writer, and which in turn saved my life. I was in a dark place after a brutal separation/divorce and wanted to end my life, but I put all my sadness/hate into stories and I with other things recovered. I now have written 15 short stories (almost 16) and am putting together my first anthology :)
Apparently you didn't learn everything Ellison had to teach. I looked at your UA-cam site - no links to your works or how to buy them. What kind of marketing is that?
@@DrCruel Why does he have to market himself right now? He's busy enjoying the creative process. Obviously, he cares more about developing his work, and that's perfectly fine.
2:10: Probably about 12 years ago now, I remember reading on online journal written by a man who slowly lost his life due to an MRSA infection he received at the hospital; the injury was received after waking up and walking from the master bedroom to the bathroom - and in doing so, walking directly into the end of one-half of a french-door which was left ajar by his wife, at the perfect angle to pass between his arms/collarbone and cave in one of the orbits of his skull near the sinus cavity. The sickest and saddest part about the last few journal entries on his blog wasn't his realization at his fate, but scrolling back through time the other direction, where there were multiple posts of evidence describing his fears of this blunt-impact trauma occurring (minus the forecasted cascading MRSA infection and then death, of course) and his attempts to plead with his wife to leave the doors all the way open or closed, not in-between. Back to the libretto of writing - this anecdote is more evidence that Truth is indeed stranger than Fiction. Thanks for the inspiration, Harlan. Missing you forever.
As a kid I was told I had a great imagination more so than the other kids. My english teacher told me my short story was a bit dark and gory but really good and told me I should stay away from the Army and take up writing. Well like most arrogant teens I laughed at him and said whatever. I never joined the Army I ended up bouncing from job to job wondering what hell I wanted to do with my life college did not appeal to me because I did not want to go into debt by running up a bunch of loans I can't pay back. One day I just started think of a person in my mind and my mind started putting a story with her and then before I knew I had out a paragraph then few days later I had a whole chapter thus beginning the snowball effect. by this time I realized I should have been doing this the second I graduated highschool.
I did start write on notebooks and the went into computers.I love writing and is really a freedom for me and i started when i was 16/15 ich than i did it more and more and now am a self published writer online.
Harlan, YOU ARE MY HERO! . . . I am very sure that da Vinci in all his glory would be proud that you mentioned his name in this gleeful spiel on how you became a writer. Love that you got your Library card at 2 yrs old. . . . I also read cereal boxes, and my saint, and I mean that woman was a SAINT to put up with me! Mother taught me phonics and the sheer delight of reading Dick and Jane, and a sweet little story called the Hen and the Strawberries. . . but I rapse on n on. Harlan, there is no price that they could put on your wit, nor lid they could ever devise that would clamp down on your BEYOND human awesome capacity to Tell a story. . . . it is an art we need so much more of. Do some public appearances, and teach us more awesome one. You are still a trip[. You were a wild trip at the Writer's Conference at Mt Sac, 1975 or 1976, and yep, I do remember that you asked the audience to take off our watches, they dimmed the house lights down, and you told a story of a man that wore no jewlry, nor even a watch. . . Later I listened a little to Bradbury, and I adored the fact that you gave him a ride that day. You are one of the greatest storytellers that I have ever listened to. have fun with keeping the dogs with gnashing teeth at bay at Google and youtube.
My kid is indeed reading words and two-three word phrases off the pages of random books he gets his hands on and he's about to turn three, so I'm inclined to believe you did get that library card by age three! :D
It’s 2019, and a “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge” advertisement appeared before this video. Considering how Harlan felt about “Star Wars” and Disney, I think he’d be screaming at the top of his lungs at the effrontery of having such hollow corporate bookends appear anywhere near his videos on his own channel, no less.
Ellison pretty famously hated Star Wars. He was a little more charitable to the Disney canon, though I think its probably safe to say he loathed Disney the man and corporation.
Hi Mr. Ellison. I love your stories and I was wondering how you feel about the "I have no mouth" PC game just being re-released via gog, com? Thank you.

2:08 Not gonna lie, I was wondering during the whole video lol.
Would you be up for a phone interview?
He was very, very ill by that time.
Isn't there a way to have the "Please subscribe" annotation appear as your avatar in the corner of the video? I know I've seen it in other videos.
Axel Kusanagi I doubt he as such concerns. He probably doesn't internet.
wonder what broad did that to him.....
Interesting. In another video Ellison describes himself as "a straight A student." How can he be a straight A student if he's lousy in math?
Geez. He looks worn.
Yes.
Not sure of date.
He looks...so old...
He was 79 by that time and after several heart surgeries.
He was not self taught how to read. Nobody is.
