He is like the perfect combination of Elvis and a New Wave Goth rock star. This song has always been a favorite on Some Great Reward. Stripped down and done the way Dave did it... beyond brilliant. Martin's vocals coming in still send chills as well.
Oh doesn't it give you chills and thrills when their voices meld? It's perfection, like a warm oil massage! I also rather love the fact that Martin didn't even need to glance at the lyrics. I'm a little surprised Dave did, but heck, with 37 years of songs under your belt, I'm sure your brain can only hold so many!!!
DM's logic - let's dig up a song we haven't played for ages, make a cool rearrangement, pull it off perfectly and ... let's never play it live in front of fans :P
LOL :P the problem here with us fans is that we are reeeaaally spoilt by the over amount of talent these guys have... Look what's the result when they just play around with songs!! As Dave puts it "that's great"
I feel so privileged to be able to enjoy Dave's rich baritone voice. It goes so well with the quasi folk style of the song. Really amazingly well-written song as well.
Same here. I have been a DM fan since I was 8 in 1983. Pretty much everything they have ever done is beyond amazing to me. Love them as much now as I did then!
Mine too. This song reminds me of the time Vlad the Impaler pushed me out of a window to replace me with a richer wife and made it look like a suicide.
But I blame myself for my failed marriage to Count Dracula. To this day, I still blame myself. My dowry didn't cut muster and I couldn't figure out a way to pull my own weight without publicizing our financial difficulties as a family.
I wonder why people often say "better than the original" when they hear an alternative version like this. It's certainly good, but usually as a fan you have so much memories connected to the original, can it really be better? You've heard the original stuff so many times, maybe it's a bit worn out, so a new approach to a song is always something you will like. But would you really resign on the original in favour of this new version?
I really admire how Dave's trying to channel his 22 year old self here. I haven't heard him hit that old baritone since 1995 or so (the "old" Dave voice vs. the Ultra-era Dave where he to relearn how to sing).
***** After cleaning up around the time Ultra was released, his voice was shot. He had to take singing lessons as he couldn't get through most of the songs on Ultra. If you have the Ultra Remaster CD/DVD set, watch the documentary. It's fascinating. Besides, if you're a serious fan, as I presume you are if you're here commenting, don't you agree that his voice is very different now than it once was?
That baritone is absolutely AWESOME, and I think that he is using it better now. When he was young he was not mature enough to fully exploit the potentials of his great voice. It's true that in the Devotional era he sounded wonderful and dark live, but he didn't explore subtleties and range. I do think vocal coaching has done him good, and also the way he and Mart are writing songs nowadays: more to do good service to his gifts and not just to explore strange sounds and production... (I hate it when a song is overproduced and too many effects are added to Dave's voice... The new version of Going Backwards says it all)
I really love some of the songs from SOFAD, but watching his live performances from that time is a little hard, because I know he's probably on drugs in many of them. Although to be fair, his behavior did fit the songs and era, and for all I know he didn't perform high. I've never wanted to look to far into it.
One of my favorite songs... all I can say is WOW. Stands the test of time. (Marty.. you gotta write songs these day to highly Dave's warm baritone like this)
Absolutely GREAT? Like Dave said? OH NOOO!! ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT!! These two Guys give me Goosegumps every time I listen to them sing together!! Thanks a lot for sharing such an AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!
Very good voice of dave. Soft, characteristic and of course sexy. I love it very much. Hope he will never never stop singing. And in this song it's great to hear martins voice together with dave's. They're stars and they're perfect. I love them since 1984.
Love this song. Bother this version and the album one. "Just found it in me pocket." That line always cracks me up, I replay that just by itself several times every time.
I'm pretty sure this was set up. PRETTY sure. Martin doesn't sounds a wee bit sardonic when he says "What a good idea." (Maybe he just put it in Dave's pocket!) But it's still so awesome. I love how he's doing like, a Johnny Cash/Elvis version of the song, with distinct Old Western Movie music twang mixed with Modern "DM" style but it's still 100% DM. Ooooh, and when Martin and Dave's voices blend, it's like a hot fudge sundae for the ears. Makes me feel funny deep in my tummy. And shiver a little too. And when Dave does that little wrinkle of his nose...SQUEEE! Whooo! *Ahem* Excuse me, sorry. Oh, and I do the same thing with the pocket line. I wonder if I could make it my message notification on my phone...?
Ricordo benissimo questa canzone, e dopo tanti anni mi sono andato a riascoltare anche l'originale. Questa versione secondo me esalta ancora di più' il timbro vocale unico di quest uomo...semplicemente superlativo!
When DM steps out of what we think is their comphort zone, they always do something that transcends. They have changed their style of playing and stuff almost with every album and yet it is all DM music. If you listen to Music for the Masses and to the newest album they don't sound the same but they feel the same.
I really love this acoustic version more than 80-s version. Though I was a kid then, and there were quite a lot of good old songs I liked then, but that style of pop music of 80-s, I never liked that electronic fake sounds of pop music back then. That tasteless fashion for clothes, too. So, thank you for reviving the song and making it melodic, so that I would be able to appreciate its real beauty. Perhaps many other people like me, too.
They really should play this one and/or the other awesome songs from that album (Lie To Me, Something To Do, If You Want) again on tour sometime... *sigh*
Yep. Besides this one, I am also particular to A Broken Frame. Know they were finding themselves, especially after Vince Clarke left, but also has some forgotten gems, especially The Sun and The Rainfall...
En este tema, el cambio de ritmo al pasar a la estrofa en la que Martin hace el coro es sublime. Son los típicos toques que les han hecho siempre irrepetibles
One of the most underrated DM songs EVER! Simply brilliant!
Kenneth Bloch I fully agree. The melodies (second voices) of the studio version are SO beautiful
never played live..such a shame
Sometimes I forget how much I love Depeche Mode 🤣
Their music does wonders for my Soul!
He is like the perfect combination of Elvis and a New Wave Goth rock star. This song has always been a favorite on Some Great Reward. Stripped down and done the way Dave did it... beyond brilliant. Martin's vocals coming in still send chills as well.

djkenny I’ve always said he has some Elvis characteristics!

Questo brano è già bello in versione album ma in questa versione quasi "quieter' si supera ...! 🤩
DM's logic - let's dig up a song we haven't played for ages, make a cool rearrangement, pull it off perfectly and ... let's never play it live in front of fans :P
LOL :P

The funny part is that they've never played this song live
@Luis Alonzo Enjoy the Silence will NEVER get tired or old. Ever.
The accuracy 😭
Let’s play blasphemous rumours live again on next tour 😊
HOW??? HOW does a person get such a divine voice?? My god...
Oh my God what a version! What a band !
How lucky we are to have their music !
I feel so privileged to be able to enjoy Dave's rich baritone voice. It goes so well with the quasi folk style of the song. Really amazingly well-written song as well.
It's like hot fudge! And Martin's is smooth and sweet and pure, like ice cream! As I mentioned above. DM is the Hot Fudge sundae of the music world!
Andy's probably like "Is there something to do
Is there something to do
Is there something to do
Is there something to do"
haha you just made my day
This comment deserved so much more love. Almost laughed myself out of the chair.
Theyownyou ik so great
That line broke so much boredom as well as the Hamburg video in 1985

Never, never enough Martin's smiling face, Dave emotion in all track and other lively guys, who provide outstanding background: LOVE, BELOVED
Very,Very NICE INDEED!!
This song always made me smile when I was younger. Now that I'm older (50 soon), I still smile with happy memories Thank You : )
Same here
Same here. I have been a DM fan since I was 8 in 1983. Pretty much everything they have ever done is beyond amazing to me. Love them as much now as I did then!
Same here but nearly 51. Depeche is the soundtrack of my life.

His voice penetrates my soul..beyond beautiful!*_*

Dave randomly pulls a song out of his pocket. don't see that everyday! Awesomeness!!
~DM4EVER~
I'm 16 and i love DM, thanks mum
Perfection!
So sad they never played it live
Never say never... 😉
Słucham i słucham... 25 lat minęło i dalej słucham....
omg! How did I just find this TODAY!? This is pure gold omgomg
Dave's voice... just... oh my God!
I have no idea why they haven't produced a CD with these "bare" or studio version songs, so much better than originals
I wonder why people often say "better than the original" when they hear an alternative version like this. @@5UhrMorgens people have no clue lol
Damn, Dave’s voice is so deep he makes the ground shake when he sings
I really admire how Dave's trying to channel his 22 year old self here. I haven't heard him hit that old baritone since 1995 or so (the "old" Dave voice vs. the Ultra-era Dave where he to relearn how to sing).
Augusto Acuña you have to learn techniques that fit how your voice changes which can be difficult when you've sang a certain way for a long time
***** After cleaning up around the time Ultra was released, his voice was shot. He had to take singing lessons as he couldn't get through most of the songs on Ultra. If you have the Ultra Remaster CD/DVD set, watch the documentary. It's fascinating.

His voice has developed a Nick Cave quality that I like.
That baritone is absolutely AWESOME, and I think that he is using it better now. When he was young he was not mature enough to fully exploit the potentials of his great voice. Listening in 2021. Never gets old
...even in 2022 still a great track from the fourth DM-Album. DM - I still love you.
One of my favorite songs... all I can say is WOW. Stands the test of time. (Marty.. you gotta write songs these day to highly Dave's warm baritone like this)
just love dave gahan and he sing like a angel....DEPECHE MODE rock the world
Holy goodness. It's sooooo different, but how can you not think it divine!?
Absolutely GREAT? Like Dave said? OH NOOO!! ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT!! These two Guys give me Goosegumps every time I listen to them sing together!! Thanks a lot for sharing such an AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!
Don´t know why. I´m into Depeche Mode for 41 years now ... This is my absolutely favourite song ever :D
The way Dave sings "Let's savor a kiss like we'd savor a sip", my God... That man is sexiness personified.
The end:
Dave: "That was great!" (slightly surprised)
Mart : "Lol!"
:D
Very good voice of dave. Soft, characteristic and of course sexy. I love it very much. Hope he will never never stop singing. And in this song it's great to hear martins voice together with dave's. They're stars and they're perfect. I love them since 1984.
Depeche always puts me in a good mood
Love the bluesy guitar interpretation of this song. Just shows the quality of this band.
So this is why they are simply the best band on the world... only immense emotions...
He explained the core of all relationship problems
I love this song, it knocks the execution
a voice so deep and perfect, clean guitar and a knock
an electro band doing unplugged???? only DM can do that!!! they are out of this world :) DM4ever
tremendous! I'm in heaven when the're playing with old songs.
I really wish them a long life full of inspiration, I want to see them together smiling, joking and creating when they r on their 80's
Lovely. Absolutely lovely. What the world will be without Depeche Mode.
Love this song. Bother this version and the album one. "Just found it in me pocket." That line always cracks me up, I replay that just by itself several times every time.
:)
Martin Warford lol
And with that kid's giggle of his.... goowwwsh! I die every time :) Simply awesome!!!

They really should play this one and/or the other awesome songs from that album (Lie To Me, Something To Do, If You Want) again on tour sometime... *sigh*
XO Armendariz they should. IMHO their first mature album. A forgotten gem.
Yep. Besides this one, I am also particular to A Broken Frame. Know they were finding themselves, especially after Vince Clarke left, but also has some forgotten gems, especially The Sun and The Rainfall...

The best band of the world!!!
One of my top three songs Martin wrote. Still love these songs and apparently will forever.
That was really amazing.
Ufffff tremendo, que voz tiene este tipo!
Why in the hell is this not on a record?!
Arte Delint The original one is on Some Great Reward...
La voz de Dave es impresionante!
Es capaz de cantar lo que se le ponga por delante. Preciosa voz 😍
Damn Dave!! What a sexy voice
Fabuleuse version, une voix magnifique le meilleur groupe du monde.
Любимая песня в прекрасном исполнении ❤
